SNY: Salfino: Injury-plagued Mets need Santana to right the ship

All aboard the eternal caravan of reincarnation…

There are lots of stories around the Web and even in the mainstream press about Santana’s decreasing velocity. But let’s break some ground, courtesy of my friends at Baseball Info Solutions, and present Santana’s average fastball velocity month-by-month since he’s began his Mets career. Of course, March of 2008 was just one start:

He’s about 1.6 MPH off his Mets peak. My benchmark for significant concern over loss of velocity is two MPH, given that’s what scouts use to grade fastballs—88 is below average, 90 is average, 92 is plus, 94 is plus-plus. And I’m not talking peak velocity here, but average fastball velocity for starters. So Santana, by this measure, is very close to stepping down one tier in velocity, which would be significant.

On the other hand, Santana’s average fastball velocity as a Met for all the months prior to June of this year was 91.15. He’s been very effective in those months, obviously. So now our velocity loss is just 0.8 miles per hour, or one half the difference as measured by peak to trough. Looking at it this way, which I think is most reasonable, gives us due cause to be skeptical that velocity is the root cause of his recent struggles.

That leaves two other options—decreased effectiveness of his other offerings, most likely his heralded changeup, and just a random slump that will soon melt away as mysteriously as it formed.

I've never felt this hopeless about their chances. Johan can't right a sinking ship. His effort and attitude are commendable but useless with an ownership that just doesn't care.

I thought the problem was an ownership that lost all its money to Bernie Madoff.

Well, maybe, but they've sucked for years. And if they're strapped, sell the f'n team! I think Cuban would love a New York franchise, certainly Trump would. (I'm not saying I'd like either of them, but they'd be better than Fred & Jeff).

I don't think the Wilpons' willingness to spend money is the problem with this season in particular. They could have spent more and signed Dunn but Sheffield would not have signed with the Mets if they had signed Dunn. Dunn has probably been more valuable but the difference is marginal (Dunn is the better bet the rest of the way).

Some years you are unlucky. Even the Red Sox and Yankees (arguably the best combos of smart front offices and large payrolls) missed the playoffs once each the last 5 years. If the Mets had not blown oppurtunities the last two years this season wouldn't be as annoying.

It's really sad that the Mets have only made the playoffs once in the last 9 years. A team with their resources should be making the playoffs, at the very least, 50% of the time. Omar Minaya didn't inherit a very good franchise but if the Mets aren't in better shape in the next year or two, he needs to be replaced. The Wilpons are not the problem, IMHO.

I have nightmares thinking of them replacing Minaya. Could they mix Harizin, Phillips and Duquette into the next franchise killer?
