Sources: Cliff Floyd, Rays could have deal in place by weekend

No Bull!

The Tampa Bay Rays are in serious discussions with free-agent outfielder Cliff Floyd and could have an agreement in place by the weekend, baseball sources told ESPN.com.

The Rays have been looking for a bat in right field since sending Delmon Young to Minnesota two weeks ago in a multiplayer trade that brought pitcher Matt Garza to Tampa.

...The Rays expect Floyd to log at-bats at designated hitter against right-handed pitching and share time in right field with Jonny Gomes in 2008. Rocco Baldelli could also be in the mix if he’s healthy.

This might be a year too early for this kind of deal for Tampa, but I'm still excited that they're really starting to compete. And I say this as a fan of a team in their division.

For some reason, when Tampa is involved, I read serious differently there. It's like, "No really, they are serious, he might actually sign with them". Good. I like Bossman and Navarro.

I can't rationally justify how excited I was when I learned that BJ stands for Bossman Junior.

Cliff must love the fact that he can call someone else on the team brittle in comparison. What's the lineup going to look like for the 20 or so games Baldelli and Floyd are healthy?

That, along with the signing of Floyd, is enough to make me a Rays fan.

I think BJ stands for Bubba Junior with respect to BJ Ryan.

share time in right field with Jonny Gomes in 2008.

Didn't notice this the first time around. This has the potential to be a monster offensive platoon. They'll probably give it back on defense though.

I think the Orioles have a lock on last. Big question is can the Rays beat Toronto for third place?

Ten years ago the Rays were signing Greg Vaughn to the biggest contract possible after he had just finished a mega-fluke performance with the Padres. Now they're signing Cliff Floyd as a bit player for a reasonable contract at a time when he's pretty underrated.

He'll make a fine Tampa Bay Injur-Ray.

If Lincecum's been available, I wonder if TB's kicking itself. Garza should be good, though.
