Sox draft Michael Yastrzemski

Someday in the distant future, there might just be another Yaz in the Red Sox outfield.

In the 36th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft this afternoon, the Red Sox selected St. John’s Prep (Danvers) outfielder Michael Yastrzemski.

The last name, of course, isn’t just familiar in New England. It’s legendary. He is the grandson of Red Sox icon and Baseball Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski.

Thanks to Crumbs.

Isn't he looking to go to College?

Milo? But that was a long time ago.

Other notable 36th-round draft picks of the Red Sox: Lou Merloni, and... that's it. That's as close to "notable" as I can get.

That's where Blutarsky went!

The Cardinals drafted Albert's cousin, Wilfrido Pujols. Hasn't worked out as well as AP.

My favorite part about that: Wilfredo was drafted higher than Albert.

I believe he has a scholarship to play for Vanderbilt

Yes, he stated that unless he went in the 1st round, that he would attend Vandy. But it's the Sox!! So maybe he'll sign like fellow New England-er Ryan Westmoreland in 2008. He was bound for Vandy, also...

Sounds like he has the defense to play center. At 5'11 180, he would be small by today's corner-OF standards.

So is that to say that he is a substantially better prospect than a normal 36th round pick? Not a first round pick, obviously, but someone who might have went much higher had there been a better chance that he would sign?

I always love a good Descendents reference.

An American League team drafting one of their Hall of Famers' grandsons? Don't be silly.
