Sox Machine: When sacks are packed, Quentin gets plunked

Kill Carlos Vol 3...another hit for Quentin.

It marked the third time this season a pitch that left a mark on Quentin drove in a run—George Sherrill and Justin Verlander provided the other two—meaning he already topped last year’s leaders.  In 2007, A.J. Pierzynski and Rob Mackowiak were among a six-way tie with two.

He’s the first player since J.T. Snow in 2004 to be hit by a pitch with the bases loaded three times in a season.  Snow achieved that in 107 games; Quentin has only played 22 so far.

Now, CQ has a chance to make history.  No player in the last 52 years has driven in a run by taking one for the team four times in a season, according to Baseball- Reference.com’s Play Index, which has complete seasons dating back to 1956.  Considering the aggregate number of bases-loaded HBPs generally decreased as I searched back through the years, he could possibly be looking at a modern-day record.

That Jayson Stark kind of stuff is all well and good, but I'm more impressed with the 996 OPS (which leads the team), the 19 runs scored (which also leads the team), and the 19 RBIs (2nd most on the team).

I didn't see the first two, but I can assure all and sundry he had little chance of getting out of the way of yesterday's pitch.

None of his HBPs have been cheap, really. He doesn't make the most dramatic effort to get out of the way, but the ball is definitely coming at him. It's uncanny.

I was impressed with the way he scored from second on a grounder to short yesterday. Chris Carter is coming around in High-A after a miserable start (7 HR in 83 AB, .217/.333/.542), but if Quentin keeps producing anywhere near close to this level, Kenny got a steal.

It was pretty cool (if you weren't an O's fan), but you're going to give folks the wrong impression...there was an error on the play.

Quentin has been awesome. I am ecstatic I held onto him in DMB.

Eric Byrnes .281/.361/.500 121 OPS+ 3 years 30 million

Carlos Quentin .288/.435/.562 166 OPS+ about 400k, not even arb eligible until after 2009

Sigh.......

Yes, but Byrnes has all those hilarious TV appearances!

Don't despair, shoewizz, I doubt he'll be at .435 come October.

All those HBPs will wear down Quentin just in time for EByrnes patented 2nd half surge to, er, nevermind...

Is Mark Quinn the all-time leader for home runs by a player with a "Q" beginning his last name?

Yup. Just edged out former record-holder Jamie Quirk.

Quentin's tied for sixth on the Q HR list.

But without Chris Carter, what else would it have taken to land Haren?

I think they could have found a way.

Todd Zeile managed to finally top Gus Zernial on the Z list before he retired. Of course Richie Zisk was hampered by that low-offense era he played in.

253 T Zeile
237 G Zernial
207 R Zisk
91 D Zimmer
73 G Zaun
61 A Zarilla
58 H Zimmerman
50 N Zauchin
46 R Zimmerman
30 D Zwilling
26 C Zimmer
15 G Zinn
12 C Zambrano

active players in bold. I stopped listing them when I got to a pitcher.

CQ is the first player in ML history to have "Quentin" as a last name or a first name (Del Wilber's middle name was Quentin).

EDIT: It doesn't look like Quentin Davis is going to make it.

He may not, and there's always the risk of an injury, but it's pretty obvious that the guy is an offensive monster -- in three stints at AAA, his LOWEST OBP was .422. His lowest OPS in the minors was in 2006 (911 OPS), when he also posted an OPS of 872 in 57 games for the Diamondbacks.

Getting rid of a promising young player because he has one bad season is, frankly, a rookie move. While Arizona might be the cream of the NL right now -- they did a great job getting a big-time pitcher to go with Webb -- you're not going to get very far throwing away free talent.

Oops, wrong organization.

Jeff Moorad is no rookie, he's also got the Shawn Green trade and Russ Ortiz signing on his resume as an idiot.
   20. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: April 29, 2008 at 01:01 AM (#2762080)
Signing Byrnes was the mistake. They had no spot for Quentin and he was coming off an injury. Considering the circumstances, trading him wasn't the worst move. Signing Byrnes was probably the worst move.
   21. 1k5v3L Posted: April 29, 2008 at 01:15 AM (#2762085)
Signing Josh Byrnes was a great move.

Signing Eric Byrnes to his 3 year extension, by going OVER Josh Byrnes's head and against his wishes, was a vintage Jeff Moorad moronic move, up there with the Russ Ortiz signing and the Shawn Green trade. Jeff Moorad may be a smart man, but he's the John Gambadoro of baseball owners--all hot air, no substance.

In fact, right now I'd trade Jeff Moorad for Barry Zito, straight up.

Quentin on Monday: 3-for-4 with a walk, and a triple short of the cycle. He's awesome.
   23. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: April 29, 2008 at 01:17 AM (#2762090)
And the game isn't even over yet! He still may cycle it up.

Obviously you haven't been paying attention. So here, let me recap it for you:

Josh Byrnes had no intention of signing Eric Byrnes to an extension. Then Eric Byrnes hit a walk off home run against Atlanta last summer, Moorad called him in the office, held his family jewels for an hour, and gave him a 3 year, $30m deal. And then told Josh Byrnes to talk to Eric's people.

When you have Justin Upton ready for RF, Chris Young in CF and Eric Byrnes in LF, with no-trade protection and $30m over the next 3 years, you have to trade Quentin before he loses all his trade value rotting in AAA for another season. Quentin would've looked pretty #### good in LF right now.

I really hate bashing Jeff Moorad again because it's really not his fault he just doesn't get it, but you wish he'd have learned from the 2005 fiascos...
   25. Elston Gunn Posted: April 29, 2008 at 01:37 AM (#2762098)
You can compare Quentin to Byrnes, but I'm pretty sure that if he hadn't been traded for Carter, he would have been substituted in the Haren trade, possibly even without the Byrnes extension. As an A's fan, I think I have just as much right to be bitter about the D'Backs giving up on him as the Snakes fans do. Are you aware that Oakland's playing Emil Brown, Ryan Sweeney, Chris Denorfia and Jack Cust out there right now? *sigh*
   26. 1k5v3L Posted: April 29, 2008 at 01:45 AM (#2762099)
He MIGHT have been substituted in the Haren trade.

I know you guys don't surf so in my semi drunken delirious state (A's fan just blew out Angels) I have to say there is a world class surf spot in San Quintin Mexico (6 hours south of Tijuana) that takes a short boat / jet ski ride to get to. (And I've been to most of the known world class surf spots around the world).

Oh, I have.

When the Diamondbacks do something right, it's because of Josh Byrnes.

When the Diamondbacks do something wrong, it's because of Jeff Moorad.

Gotcha.

There is a great deal more evidence for this than the idea that Cashman had all his bad decisions forced on him by the Tampa Mafia. Russ Ortiz and Shawn Green were pre-Josh Byrnes, and Moorad proudly told the world he negotiated the agreement with Eric Byrnes right after Josh Byrnes told the world we wouldn't be resigning flipper.
