Spector: Arizona bullpen spins extra-inning no-no

They win the damn thing! (oof, no longer the Murph)

A no-hitter? Not quite, but this is one of the oddest achievements in baseball history, to be sure…

Diamondbacks relievers Jon Rauch (1 IP), Esmerling Vasquez (2), Clay Zavada (2.2, with the best mustache in the majors so long as Sal Fasano isn’t around) and Leo Rosales (3.1) combined to throw nine consecutive innings of no-hit ball in San Diego tonight. The innings? The 10th through 18th, as Arizona got a 9-6 win.

And how did Arizona get that win? On a three-run homer by Mark Reynolds (previously 0-for-6 with four strikeouts and two walks… a Three True Outcomes king) in the top of the 18th off Josh Wilson. That would be Padres shortstop Josh Wilson, who came in after San Diego ran out of pitchers. Wilson does have some pitching experience—he worked an inning for Arizona earlier this season!

This has to be a first in MLB history, right? There can't have been many 18+ inning games to begin with, and the odds are none featured 9 no-hit innings consecutively.

See, this is what makes baseball great. That on a random Sunday something like this happens.

And the truly silly part is the nine no-hit innings came after the bullpen couldn't hold a five run lead in the ninth. Crazy game.

And all but Clay Zavada came into the game (and left) with an ERA over 5.00. As frustrating a game as it was to watch as an Arizona fan, I can't imagine what a gut punch it must be for Padres fans.

Pity Josh Wilson for having to face the one team in the league that has a scouting report on him - and question Hinch for having Parra sac bunt. I mean, what the hell?

Well, there have been plenty of 9 inning consecutive no hit games. That is what we like to call a no-hitter.

Anyway, relievers have done it. There was a game where Babe Ruth gave up a walk and then got ejected and Ernie Shore came in and pitched 9 inning no hit ball.

Then there was the Toney-Vaughn game in which they both pitched 9 innings of no hit ball. Hippo gave up hits and the game in the 10th while Fred continued the no-hitter in the 10th for the win.

Let me get this straight...

- Eckstein hits a 3-run home run (his first of the season) with two out and the team trailing by 3. He was pinch-hitting (with his .669 OPS). He now has 3 HR in his last 514 AB.
- The Diamondbacks bullpen coughs up a 5-run 9th inning lead.
- The same bullpen then throws 9 more no-hit innings.
- The Padres use 9 pitchers and then are forced to use a shortstop for the 18th inning (Josh Wilson).
- Coincidentally, Josh Wilson had pitched earlier this season...for the Diamondbacks.
- The winning home run comes from Mark Reynolds, who had previously gone 0-for-6 with 4 strikeouts (and 2 walks).

Yeah, that's some weird #### right there.

Win expectation is normally better in a game by sac bunting in the top of the last inning. But probably not with Parra at bat. But it also doesn't factor in that SD was being no-hit by the relievers and is a low scoring team in a low scoring park.

Why didn't Montero head home on the bunt in the 15th?

I also enjoyed 2 runs scoring on Albert Pujols' sac fly earlier in the day.

I was pretty confused when I noticed it in the box score ... saw the replay later and was like, DUH!(CFer crashes into wall in deep center while making catch, falls down, runners on 3rd and 2nd both score.)

Still neat, though.

July 6, 1980. Cubs @ Pirates. Cubs relievers threw 12+ consecutive no-hit innings only to lose the game in the 20th.

9 innings of no-hit ball? Well, that has to be up there with Ernie Shore's pseudo-perfect game (Babe Ruth got thrown out after the first batter, Ernie Shore did the rest) in greatest relief pitching performances ever.

Only the Cubs could pull a team Harvey Haddix (sorry Cubs Fans).

Assuming this isn't sarcasm, it's because he pitched on Friday and Saturday (and didn't do well on Saturday at all.)
