Spector: John Smoltz could follow Roger Clemens’ path - as a midseason hire

The fee for a birth certificate change of name is approximately $40 per child. Save up!

The righthander’s agent, Keith Grunewald, told the Daily News on Friday that “John’s made it clear he’d love to finish his career in Atlanta, but that depends on what (Braves GM Frank Wren) and the guys want to do.”

That could depend on the Braves’ performance. Wren said on Thursday that Atlanta, coming off its first 90-loss season since 1990, when Smoltz was a budding star, will not trade its top prospects - seeming to quash rumors of a deal for Jake Peavy. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on its Web site Friday that the Braves are still pursuing the Padres ace with lower-tier prospects, but Peavy or not, Smoltz might not fit into their plans. In that case, he could then wait to find a team that needs him early next season.

“That’s not a bad approcach to say who is winning and who can he help?” Grunewald said. “There will be injuries and poor performance around the league, so that will be part of it. … He won’t be ready for the beginning of the season, but we’re thinking May or June and he could make an impact like Roger Clemens a couple of years ago to help make a run at a playoff spot.”

Do steroids and nail 15-year-olds?

Damn it, I was going to post that. I guess the fact we didn't make it past the first post without someone making that connection shows it wasn't a terribly original jab in the first place.

Schilling has speculated about this too. Who's next, Randy Johnson? I think Clemens started a trend for 40+ pitchers.

That was Mindy McCready's age when Clemens first met her.

I guess we can rule out Philadelphia for John Smoltz. On Citizens Bank Park, he said, "I’ve played a long time, and some of the balls that are leaving there, it’s not right. It’s a joke."

Even as I type this J.P. Ricciardi is readying his explanation on why this is a really bad idea for the Blue Jays.

Best Regards

John

Actually it wouldn't be a bad idea for the Blue Jays to take the first couple months of the 2009 season off. Nobody would ever notice that they were gone, and they'd still wind up with more wins than the Orioles.

I'd be okay with Smoltz doing this as long as he doesn't join any team other than the Braves...
