Splice Today: Smith: Save The Marlins!

Save the Marlins?  Why...I doubt even Porter, Sandy, and Bud Ricks could save them!

Since then, my interest has perked up about the club, and last Saturday night I watched a heartbreaking Marlins loss to the Phillies, which essentially ended their attempt to pull an ’07 Rockies and win a berth in postseason. And, in fairness, that game did attract some 28,000 fans, but the reality is simple: the Marlins need to move to another city. I’m aware that the Florida Supreme Court has apparently paved the way for the Marlins owners to construct a new taxpayer-funded stadium in Miami’s Little Havana, but anyone who’s followed the long battle about the relocation has to be dubious that it’ll ever come to fruition. (As I said, I haven’t tracked the Marlins before this year on the field, but any baseball fan would be captivated, or repulsed, at the team’s low payroll, awful attendance and seemingly annual auctions for their best players.)

The Marlins aren't going anywhere. Yes, the fanbase is bandwagon as bandwagon can get, but that is a by-product of the herky-jerky manner in which Huizenga and Loria have raised and slashed payroll. Is it a strong market? By no means. But, Dolphin Stadium is terrible for baseball, and it may be that Loria is simply going to wait till the new stadium is online before getting payroll up to respectable levels.

And, yes... The new stadium is coming. And, as mentioned... the Marlins aren't going anywhere. Where, pray tell, would they go? Forget Vegas. DMA is tiny, and any facility would have to be built with private funds. Remember... would have to have a roof... spendy.

Harrah's just dropped out of group building a new arena designed to lure the NHL to Vegas, and group lead by Jerry Bruckheimer has jumped in to fill the void. That happens and then MLB is further off still.

South Florida is far from a good baseball market, but the alternatives are exceptionally limited.
