Sports Justice: I hope Cecil Cooper is learning from his mistakes

Give ‘em hell Coop!

Cecil Cooper is going to fail as a big league manager if he’s unwilling to confront Carlos Lee about his lack of hustle and his habit showing up late for batting practice. He’ll lose respect in the clubhouse, and when that goes, a manager can’t continue.

In the end, there’s probably not much he can do about it. Carlos Lee’s $100 million is guaranteed. He’s going to get his cash whether he runs hard to first base or not.

But Cooper absolutely, positively must draw a line in the about what he stands for. Phil Garner is supposed to have had several talks with Lee on that topic, and nothing worked. Cooper may have spoken to him, too, without results. So it’s close to time to take a stand. Next time he fails to run out a ground ball, send him to the clubhouse. Let the world that your team won’t tolerate this kind of stuff.

The Astros should sign Damaso Marte. Lee is happier when he can slap Marte on the back of the head.

Mr. Justice would also appreciate it if Carlos would turn down his devil rock music and get the hell off his lawn.

You know who ran hard to first base? Bob Feller, that's who. These modern day ballplayers are pussies.

Somewhere along the line, I RJ decided that knowing a bit about sports and a bit about writing wasn't enough, and felt that the blowhard route was the way to go. He seems to be making a living at it though, so who am I to argue?

There is, to be fair, a difference between Justice the columnist -- he has always struck me as one of the better ones, and I used to bookmark the Chronicle to read his stuff before they {rant} started slapping those @#&^$@# popup ads onto every page {/rant} -- and Justice the blogger. He or his editor seems to have decided that "blog" = unthought-out, OTT, belligerent, and ill-edited.

If "Just Carlos being Carlos" had a better ring to it, this would not even be a story.

Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez are such exceptional players that you deal with the baggage they bring, and just thank the heavens they're on your team. Carlos Lee, not so much.

bob is right

most of the time justice in his blog writes like you would throw a bone out to a group of dogs and let them fight over it
- his columns are MUCH better. very very little blowhard there (except about barry lamar Himself)

alou

you are right
carlos is lazy and careless in the field and he never tries to ever beat out a DP grounder. too many fans don't care because he hits 300 and hardly ever strikes out.

Didn't Billy Martin try all kinds of things with Reggie even pulling him out of the game and none of it worked? So if Billy Martin can't do it why does he think Cecil Cooper is going to do it? Secondly who exactly is ownership going to side on in this one? Interim manager Cecil Cooper or 100 million dollar man?

mccoy

the owner LUUUVVVVV carlos and his cowboyness, but then again cecil cooper is the guy bud selig practically told drayton mclane to hire and tal smith has made it MORE than clear that coop will be the manager. but since carlos is the fan fave and is one of the few guys who is actually managing to hit with MOB, then nothing will happen

the fans won't boo carlos as long as his average is 300 and he don't strike out much and that is how things are

yes, you are right, i am depressed and disGUSted bout what is happening to my team
