Sports Network: Turnbow DFA’d

The Milwaukee Brewers announced Friday they have designated relief pitcher Derrick Turnbow for assignment.

Do they keep him if he clears waivers? Will he want to stay? And what about Bob?

Of course Turnbow will stay. We're talking about $3+ million.

They'll keep him if he clears waivers. Gord Ash was just on the radio talking about it. They're going to spend the next couple days trying to trade him, and if (when) that doesn't work, they'll put him on waivers. Assuming he and his $3.2M clear, he'll go to Nashville. If he refuses the assignment, he forfeits his salary.

His contract isn't guaranteed?

His contract isn't guaranteed?

No, it is.

The possibilities:
1. Brewers trade Turnbow (Turnbow still paid under his current contract)
2. Another team claims Turnbow on waivers (Turnbow still paid under his current contractt, new team picks up the contract)
3. Brewers cut Turnbow outright [HIGHLY UNLIKELY] (Turnbow still paid under his current contract)
4. Turnbow clears waivers, reports to AAA (Turnbow still paid under his current contract)
5. Turnbow clears waivers, REFUSES AAA assignment, which he has enough service time to do

#5 is the only way Turnbow doesn't get paid under his current contract, and it's solely up to Turnbow. If refuses the assigment to AAA, he's opting out of his contract, basically.

I'll take a shot on Turnbow

Melvin said he fielded a few Friday morning calls from fellow GMs regarding Turnbow.

He's open to a trade that lands Turnbow in the Major Leagues, and promised the pitcher as much on Thursday night.

"But I'm also not going to give him away," Melvin said. "If somebody says, 'I don't want to take on any money and I don't want to give up any players,' that's giving him away. I don't have a problem with playing him in the Minor Leagues. It's not like you're taking on more money."
