Sportsline: Miller: With no Barry by the Bay, Giants look to put ‘fun’ in fundamentals

Another postcard from the ledge…

Bochy is helping them with that by paying attention to fundamentals this spring the way Meryl Streep obsesses over her movie accents.

Taking the extra base, hit-and-runs, sacrifice bunts, slapping ground balls to the right side of the infield to score the runner from third base ... all stuff the Giants of the Bonds era never had to care much about.

“One run here, one run there, that could make a difference,” Dave Roberts says. “It’s playing the game of baseball.

“We can’t sit back and wait for the three-run homer. We don’t have that anymore.”

..."When you don’t quite have the power that Giants teams have had in the past, it’s going to be imperative to do the little things,” Bochy says. “Along with pitching and catching the ball, we’re going to have to execute, do some things to get runners across the plate.”

Well, they'll succeed with the first two letters, anyway. Worst spring training record anywhere.

Sometimes, if you can immerse yourself deeply enough into the process, you can avoid having to focus on the product.

Roberts, Rowand, Winn, Molina, Durham, Aurilia, Fransden, Vizquel...

Sounds like hits to me!

I agree, but I think Douglas Adams said it better:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in a moment of reasoned lucidity which is almost unique among its current tally of five million, nine hundred and seventy-five thousand, five hundred and nine pages, says of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation productSan Francisco Giants that "it is very easy to be blinded to the essential uselessness of them by the sense of achievement you get from getting them to work at all.

"In other words — and this is the rock solid principle on which the whole of the Corporation'sGiants' Galaxy-wide success is founded — their fundamental design flaws are completely hidden by their superficial design flaws."

You can't spell "fundamentals" without "least damn fun" or "sad mental fun."

We don't have any power at all!! None!

Wow, Dan..."fundamentals" = "least damn fun"...that's just an exquisite anagram right there.

Giants to put the "lose" in "losers".

I love how these stories talk about the Giants being better than you'd think because they'll focus on fundamentals this year. Makes me wonder what the hell they were paying Bochy for last year. I mean, I understand why Barry Bonds wasn't practicing his bunting, and I understand that Roberts wasn't running as much when Bonds was up or due up. But what were they doing when Barry wasn't hitting, or even playing?

Oh, I know. They were waiting around for Feliz to hit a three run homer. And Feliz was waiting around for an at-bat with two men on base...

The worst team OPS+ in recent years were the 2003 Tigers (83) and the 2004 D-backs (82). Does anyone think this Giant's club won't go lower than that?

Last year, the G's with Barry Bonds had an OPS+ of 89, which is tied for the worst Giants OPS+ since 1902. Seems likely they will set a new 106 year low in 2008.

FWIW, here is the list of the worst team OPS+ numbers since 1900:

OPS+ - Team - Year
73 - Chicago White Sox - 1910
74 - Philadelphia Athletics - 1920
74 - Toronto Blue Jays - 1981
76 - Boston Doves* - 1909
77 - Boston Braves - 1924
77 - Minnesota Twins - 1981
78 - NY Mets - 1965
78 - Boston Red Sox - 1930
79 - Cincinnati Reds - 1951
79 - Pittsburgh Pirates - 1952
79 - Boston Braves - 1930
79 - Boston Braves - 1922
79 - Seattle Mariners - 1983
79 - California Angels - 1992

* Doves = Braves

“We can’t sit back and wait for the three-run homer. We don’t have that anymore.”

Anymore? Randy Winn was fourth on the 2007 team in home runs, with 14. The guy I feel sorriest for is whoever runs the kayak concession at McCovey Cove.

There just isn't a lot of left-handed power in the division anymore, so he couldn't really hope for help from a division rival, either.

I would say Brian Sabean, but he doesn't know what OPS+ is. Actually, that 73 by the 1910 White Sox looks like a possible high water mark for this team. I'm not even sure I'm kidding when I say that.

The optimist Giants fans I know think that Lincecum and Cain will both have the two lowest ERAs/ERA+s for 20 loss pitchers ever. The rest just think that having to try for 2-1 and 1-0 wins all year will lead one of them to go postal by mid-August.

Funny, I could have sworn that the 1985 squad would have been worse. Just looked it up, and in fact their OPS+ was indeed 89.

And that team was god-awful, although I suppose they were a bit more powerful than what they have now.

pedro feliz is also gone, and he was second on the team with 20 HR. they added Rowand, who has 20-30 HR power, but other than that i don't see anyone hitting more than 20. they are going to be a vortex of massive suck- and it's not like they're particularly young and likely to improve.

Pathetic Things about the Giants:

1) They will miss Pedro Feliz' bat.
2) So much so that trading for Crede/Inge would be an improvement.
4) So much so that trading for Crede/Inge AND PLAYING THEM AT 1B would be an improvment.
5) The offense will likely improve when the 41-y.o Vizquel comes back from IR.
6) Dave Roberts isn't necessarily the worst option they have in LF.
7) Benjie Molina, Cleanup hitter

And that is really 15-25 HR power. Last year was the only year > 25 and that was a CBP influenced 17/10 split. My eyeballs agree with the numbers -- a lot of his HRs landed in the first few rows.
I'm not really trying to gang up on the Giants but historic train wrecks, like historic greatness, are fun to watch.

This year we will learn just how much God really hates sabermetrics as the Giants win 95 games.

So here's a crazy question. Assuming Bonds doesn't have a team next week, is there any chance that public pressure gets the Giants to go back and make an offer to Bonds? Looks like the Giant's payroll has been around $90 million the last couple of years, and it looks to be around $70 million right now.

Taking a quick look at the Friday April 11th game, it looks like field level seats are still available.

Are the Giants too stubborn/stupid to offer a contract, and/or is Bonds too proud to go back?

This has actually always made sense to me. He wouldn't really be blocking anyone. Rotating him with Winn and Roberts seems reasonable for everybody. If the Giants had a good young LF they wanted to use, then yeah, ditch Bonds. As is, I think SF bringing him back is not a bad idea.

But don't you see... they'd evidently have to change their advertising campaign. This Barry isn't a gamer.

Seriously, I think you're right - I don't think the Giants have anything to lose.

The Giants Fan picked a good year to ditch her season tickets, that's for sure.
