SportTicker: Cardinals’ Molina, La Russa ejected

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and manager Tony La Russa were ejected in the fifth inning of Monday’s contest against the Milwaukee Brewers. Both were ejected by plate umpire Paul Schrieber for arguing balls and strikes.

Upon getting ejected, Molina took off his catching gear - his shin guards and chest protector - and left it, along with his glove, at home plate.

Molina’s post-ejection striptease at home plate was particularly amusing, if not very mature.

Hrabosky and McLaughlin?

I always figured there was something sexual in their worship of Yadi too.

Umpire: You're close to getting tossed if you don't watch your mouth.
Yadi: So's your mom.

Did anyone see the game?

Was he justified in arguing with the ump, or was this just another case of Mr. La Russa suffering from a sandy vagina?

The strike zone was sort of inconsistent, but LaRussa was primarily out there to save Molina from making contact with the ump and making a bad situation even worse. Molina was having a full-blown meltdown, and if left to his own devices, who knows what would have happened.

Never seen a guy take off all his catcher gear at home plate and leave it there before.

He was ejected after a pitch that made the count 1-0. I was sitting in the nosebleeds, so it's hard to get a good gauge for a close call, but it didn't seem like a noteworthy pitch. Maybe he was just trying to rally the team from a big deficit.

I'd love to hear those manager ump confrontations. I wonder if Tony was trying to keep track of the time, giving LaRue enough time to strap on his gear.

Ah. Thanks for the clarification. I figured it was worth asking, since you never know with Mr. La Russa.

The picture included with this article is amusing; it shows LaRussa talking to the umpire with a bunch of catcher's gear at his feet.

STL Post-Dispatch:
Having devoted their season to “leaving it on the field,” the Cardinals took the creed to an extreme Monday in a conclusion befitting a maddening eight-game trip.

On a night in which starting pitcher Adam Wainwright hung around late with less than his best, catcher Yadier Molina left the fifth inning lacking most of his gear...
...
The Brewers already led 7-1 when plate umpire Paul Schrieber ruled Wainwright’s first pitch to right fielder Corey Hart out of the strike zone. Molina turned to object and was quickly ejected by Schrieber. Molina then methodically stripped his mask, glove, chest protector and shin guards.
...
Molina objected on the 70th of Wainwright’s 87 pitches, apparently furious that Schrieber was “squeezing” his pitcher. Wainwright... rarely touched 90 mph with his fastball; his breaking pitches frequently short-hopped the plate.
...
Usually a polite presence behind the plate, Molina was unforgiving with Schrieber. La Russa wedged himself between the two as Molina stripped, but the catcher had more for Schrieber as Molina untucked his shirt while third-base coach Jose Oquendo escorted him to the dugout.

Points for originality.

Reading this back, it all sounds rather dirty.

AP:
After Prince Fielder struck out, Corey Hart came to the plate and took a borderline pitch low and outside for a ball. Molina complained about the call and was ejected by home plate umpire Paul Schrieber as La Russa was walking out of the dugout.

“Everything was OK,” Molina said. “It was that pitch. I asked him where it was. He didn’t like it, and he threw me out.”

Molina protested his ejection by taking off his gear and leaving it in a pile at Schrieber’s feet.

“That was awesome,” Wainwright said. “If you’re going to get tossed, you might as well make it a good one. That was one of the better ones I’ve seen.”

Shouldda kept going, like Michael Ontkean in "Slapshot."

All seriousness aside, the gear stripdown is likely to cause Molina some time.

Schrieber did seem to over-react, and escalate the situation, as once Molina started questioning the call Schrieber ran around to the FRONT of Molina (between Molina and Wainright) and then turned directly to Molina, then ripped off his mask.

Non-Molina stuff:

Turnbow's AAA outing at Las Vegas Monday:
0.1 IP
1 H
2 R
3 BB
25 pitches, 9 strikes

It looked to me like the ump was going to clean the plate and give molina time to cool off, but he kept at it and thus got tossed. According to gameday it was a strike, but only about a third of the ball was over the plate, and it was at the knees. I've seen much worse strike zones this year and don't really see that pitch as egregious

AP: Molina tantrum fallout worries Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are expecting Yadier Molina to be disciplined for his antics.
...
“We’ll hear something,” manager Tony La Russa said Tuesday before the Cardinals began a six-game homestand. “It’s not going to go unnoticed.”

Molina, the youngest of three catching brothers in the major leagues, declined to revisit the matter.

“Well, I thought it was a pretty good show,” said pitching coach Dave Duncan, a former catcher who said he was never ejected during his playing career.

Duncan thought Schrieber did a good overall job on ball-strike calls, but that Molina was set off by some calls that went against the Cardinals in key situations.
...
La Russa said he didn’t learn about Molina removing his equipment until after leaving the field.
La Russa was standing in the middle of a pile of catching equipment.
How did he think it got there? That Schrieber was overcome by Molina's charms and started undressing him?

5th inning, Tony had probably put back a couple bottles worth of wine by then. If he had looked down, he probably would have become disoriented and vomited.
