SportTicker: Mariners’ Hernandez makes history with grand slam

Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners on Monday night hit the first grand slam by an American League pitcher in 37 years when he connected against fellow Venezuelan Johan Santana of the New York Mets on Monday night… It was the first grand slam by an American pitcher since Steve Dunning of the Cleveland Indians off Diego Segui of the Oakland Athletics on May 11, 1971.

Followed later by: Mariners’ Hernandez leaves with leg injury

Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez left Monday’s game against the New York Mets with an undisclosed left leg injury. While covering home on a wild pitch, Hernandez had his left ankle crashed into by a sliding Carlos Beltran, knocking the righthander to the ground with two outs in the fifth inning.

According to Gameday, the pitch to King Felix was a 93 mph fastball. I guess Santana thought that he couldn't hurt him.

I hope that he's not seriously injured.

The Mariners' announcers are calling it a sprained left ankle. At least it's (apparently) not broken.

God I hope the King is okay. I'm full of an irrational hatred for Carlos Beltran right now...white hot.

If there were a designated fielder for the pitcher, this would never have happened.

I had ESPN on mute while I was talking with some people, so I only saw this out of the corner of my eye. At a glance, it just looked like a homer to me. Then I realized it was King Felix. And then I realized it was off Johan. Ouch.

It was also the first pitch he saw.

Seriously, that was impressive. Opposite field.

A Seattle pitcher hits a grand slam:

Prominently featured in Ball Four.

Weird, weird sequence.

First and second, two out, EASY grounder to David Wright - who is having the all-time "I've knocked in a ton of runs while making a ton of untimely fielding misplays and failing in countless key hitting situations" season - and of course Wright just bungles it long enough to allow Bloomquist to reach first and load 'em up.

Then the announcers said this was King Felix's first pitch to him this season - and out it goes, an opposite-field grand slam. The Mets RF (Chavez?) doesn't quite reach the warning track backpedaling from shallow ground before it easily clears the fence.

And of course Felix gets hurt a couple of innings later and doesn't even get the win.

A classic star-crossed result for a pair of star-crossed teams.

It's looking like Felix will be okay - they're saying on the M's postgame show, that it's a minor left ankle sprain, no DL time. Felix talking like he'll make his next start, but you know the trainers aren't going to let that happen (out of caution if nothing else).

Which is a real shame, since Felix was slated to go up against Peavy on Sunday.

Man, watching the replay of that Grand Slam on MLB.com...that's the highlight of Mariners season right there. Felix crushed it opposite field!

That's great news, Esoteric. Hey, Mets fans can empathize with collisions and losing key players. We need Ryan Church back badly, and we need to win these next two games.

So, since Felix will be fine, the Mariners aren't going to throw at Beltran?

hile covering home on a wild pitch, Hernandez had his left ankle crashed into by a sliding Carlos Beltran, knocking the righthander to the ground with two outs in the fifth inning.

It doesn't happen often, but it's times like these that I wish I could do the old Primer thing and post as Hank Steinbrenner.

Well, neither team is in the AL East, so I assume they'll behave like mature adults.

well well well

looks like the mariners done found their new DH

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

- and the pitcher hitting a grannie offn santana?
with the first pitch he's seen?

absolutely THE play of the year.

right next to cecil cooper pulling a lefty after micah owings was announced as pitch hitter and sending in a righty, then SKREEEEEMING because that pitcher promptly gives up the game losing homer, then SKREEEEEMING even louder about how terrible it is to give up a homer to some freaking nobody pitcher.

and harvey,
trust me on this
cecil cooper: ned yost = ned yost: TLR
i didn't think anyne could make phil garner look good.

Hitting a home run off Johan Santana is no surprise at all. Santana's given up more home runs than any pitcher in baseball since the beginning of last year, I think. (Tied with Paul Byrd.) Not sure what's happened to him, but his newfound propensity to give up bombs doesn't appear to be a one-year statistical aberration. Fastball flattened out a little the past couple years, maybe?

Maybe so. But for an American League pitcher, in his first at-bat of the season, to hit a first-pitch opposite field grand slam off of Johan Santana? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that counts as a major surprise. And the fact that it was King Felix only made it that much more awesome. It's like he's Superman or something.

I love the way he winked at Ichiro on his way back to the dugout, too. Nice touch.
