KC Star: Royals trade Berroa to Dodgers

The Royals traded Berroa, the 2003 American League Rookie of the Year, to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor-league infielder Juan Rivera…

The Dodgers also received an undisclosed amount of cash — not surprising because Berroa is making $4.75 million this season in concluding a four-year deal for $11 million. That contract also includes a $500,000 buyout for 2009 on a club option of $5.5 million.

Berroa, 30, is batting .291 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs in 51 games for Class AAA Omaha. He spent most of last season at Omaha after batting .234 for the Royals in 2006.

The Dodgers assigned Berroa to Class AAA Las Vegas.

I'm guessing the medical news on Furcal isn't good - and Hu isn't cutting it. Not that I'm convinced that Berroa will be any better.

OK, but... this is Angel Berroa we're talking about. Career OPS+ of 78, and his glove does not compare favorably to Derek Jeter's.

Going into tonight, Hu's OPS+ is 21. He's better than that, but it's probably not a bad idea to give him some time in AAA to straighten himself out.

You might want to look up Hu and Maza's numbers in Furcal's absence. It's not if Berroa's good, but if Berroa's an improvement (at little cost).

Yeah, that deal for Berroa doesn't look very good in retrospect.

Rivera is basically the epitome of a valueless minor leaguer. He has never been able to get significant playing time. At age 21 he is a backup, mainly at second, in low A ball. He can't hit, doesn't walk much, strikes out three times as often as he does manage to walk, shows no speed or power, and apparently his defense is nothing impressive, even for the low minors.

But I'm sure his mother loves him.

This is the main reason why Berroa is a downgrade from Hu. They both hit like pitchers.

Hu looks so overmatched right now it's not even funny.

.165/.232/.214 on the year (and 4 of his 9 BB are IBB).

They did. I went to a game a couple weeks back and they played "Who Are You" in two of his three at bats.
