SportTicker: White Sox place RHP Linebrink on DL

The Chicago White Sox on Saturday placed righthander Scott Linebrink on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder. The move is retroactive to July 23.

Linebrink, 31, is 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA this season but has allowed a run in four of his last five outings. The burly righthander has struck out 33 batters in 39 innings.

To take Linebrink’s spot on the roster, the White Sox recalled righthander Ehren Wassermann from Class AAA Charlotte. The 27-year-old is 1-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 24 games with Charlotte this season… He compiled a 14.85 ERA in 11 appearances with the White Sox from April 27-June 3.

Hopefully Williams won't panic and use the team's few remaining chips to overpay for a reliever. The White Sox have a number of guys who can fill in for Linebrink -- no, they won't be nearly as effective as Linebrink has been thus far, but there's just too much risk that whatever "name" reliever you get is going to perform poorly over the 20 or so remaining innings he would pitch. Wassermann has been great at AAA, and was impressive with the Sox last season; Carrasco also has seemed pretty good (completely different and more effective than he was with KC). Of course, with Logan scuffling and Thornton possibly hurt, a deal for a lefty isn't out of the question.
