St. Louis Post Dispatch: Ludwick’s tie-breaking homer

Ludwick saves the win after the Cardinals’ bullpen blows a four-run lead.

Ryan Ludwick hit his second home run of the game off Dan Wheeler in the 10th inning, allowing the St. Louis Cardinals to recover after squandering a four-run cushion in a 9-8 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

Ludwick hit the first pitch from Wheeler (0-3) with one out in the 10th an estimated 402 feet over the wall in left-center for the second winning homer of his career. He has four career two-homer games, including two this season.

Ludwick in 131 PAs: .336/.406/.724, and La Russa is still platooning him sometimes. Dumb.

In other “La Russa can be really dumb” news, in the 9th inning today he ran a hit-and-run with Aaron Miles on with no outs, with Albert Pujols at the plate. Damn it, Tony, just let him hit the ball. Christ…

Yeah, let's criticize the manager who's won the third-most games in history, and the most ever as a Cardinal. You really think you know more about managing a baseball team than Tony LaRussa?

That hit-and-run was pretty dopey. I was arguing with the radio as it happened, 'cause from what Mike Shannon said, it sounded like Miles was running with a bag of cement on his back. But overall I'll gladly take LaRussa's managing so far this year and be glad. This team has already given me more fun baseball in seven weeks than I expected all year.

I'm not knocking TLR overall, I'm just saying, sometimes he really overthinks things. I like TLR for the most part.

We missed your commentary over at GRB during Sunday's 8th, Samourai.

It may be a different situation than I remember, but TLR was running the hit and run with Pujols up to bat and a full count. That makes perfect sense even though Albert did strike out and they had an easy double play, but a betting man would bet against Albert striking out, and that he would most likely take the bad pitch and get the walk or eliminate the dp, which Albert is pretty good at hitting into.

Ludwick is getting a little platooning but not nearly as much as he had before. I've been on the Ludwick bandwagon since before the season started, so of course his hot start doesn't suprise me, but he of course isn't as good as he's played either and part of the reason his numbers are so good is TLR is platooning him against the right pitchers.
