Star-Telegram blog: Rangers, Mark Prior agree to terms

Former prized right-hander Mark Prior, who hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2006 because of a long list of injuries, has agreed to terms with the Rangers and will report to Triple A Oklahoma City on Saturday.

Prior, who turns 30 on Tuesday, signed in early August with the Orange County Flyers of the Golden Baseball League. He tossed 11 innings without allowing an earned run, and opponents hit only .135 against him.

well, I wish him the best of luck...

Next stop, the Pirates.

I can't imagine he has much left.

Obviously it's the Golden League, but apparently he struck out 22 of his fellow unaffiliated minor leaguers in 11 innings, which is pretty cool.

Do you think surgeons get excited when they hear that Prior is playing baseball again?

You think Prior pitching is weird? Scott Proctor is in the Braves bullpen.

He was the best young pitcher I had ever seen (until King Felix) and I hope he beats all the odds.

#10, didn't you think Kerry Wood was better?
   12. Benji Posted: September 04, 2010 at 03:50 AM (#3633417)
Well, almost. I ranked them #1 and #2 in a Yahoo! fantasy league, got them both, gave way to total thrill, and watched them both spend the summer on and off the DL. I do think Wood's 20 K game was the most dominant performance I've seen.

there's like 20 games left, how many games can he get into? why would a bankrupted team sign a guy to pitch for liek 3 games?

#4 Excited? No. But they are warming up.

If he had any kind of effectiveness, even as a ROOGY, it would be a great story.

I want to agree with this, but considering the expectations, I think even if he ends up in relief it's a story about unfulfilled potential. That's not to discount that he's come back after a lot of effort, but I think the overriding narrative is that Mark Prior was supposed to be the next big thing.

Rangers' lineup for the seventh game of the World Series:

C Bengie Molina
1B Jorge Cantu
2B Cristian Guzmán
3B Toby Harrah
SS Julio Franco
RF Jeff Francoeur
CF Pete Incaviglia
LF Josh Hamilton (5-for-5 with six HR)
DH Tom Grieve
P Mark Prior

Jeff Burroughs wonders what he did to get excluded from that lineup. And surely Ruben Sierra in CF ... or Oddibe McDowell!

Mark Prior struck out two batters in a scoreless inning Sunday in his debut for the Triple-A Oklahoma City RedHawks.

Prior stranded the bases loaded after allowing a pair of singles and walking a batter in the fourth inning of Oklahoma City’s 9-1 loss to the Omaha Royals.

Wood's 20K game was the best game I've ever witnessed (possibly the best game ever pitched), but he was never as good from start to start as Prior was early in his career.

Kerry in two of his three first outings got roughed up but then he reeled off 7 starts in which he had 78 strikeouts, a 1.44 ERA, he went 5-0, the team went 7-0, and he pitched 50 innings. Prior's frist year he never really could get that dialed in for that long of a period. Usually 3 or 4 good starts was his longest stretch. It was Prior's second year that looked really outstanding and was the season where he would go long stretches where he was simply dominating.

In his final 13 starts of the season he recorded 13 decisions and went 10-3 during that period.

I had the good fortune to see Prior pitch in that stellar 2003 season. Unfortunately I got to see him pitch in one of his less than stellar outings.

I'm kind of surprised that Prior hasn't even pitched in the minors since 2006. How much of his arm was actually his original arm?
   28. Tripon Posted: September 06, 2010 at 04:30 AM (#3634203)
BTW, Cliff Lee?

Fangraphs has him at 2.0 WAR for the Rangers because of FIP.
B-Ref has him at 0.6 WAR for the Rangers because they think he should pay for giving blowjobs to at least one opposing hitting every start.

Wood's 20K game was the best game I've ever witnessed (possibly the best game ever pitched),

I don't think there can be any question. The weaksauce "hit" should have been called an error, and Wood needed his teammates for a meager 7 outs, plus he didn't walk any. Perfect games, no-hitters, these are basically team achievements that the pitcher gets the lion's share of credit (not undeservedly). The 20K games, though, are the games where the pitchers did the most, and Wood's 20K is the best and most dominant of the lot.

By sheer luck, I happened to have tickets for an Expos game during Pedro Martinez's breakout 1997 Cy Young season. He started the season 8-0 with a 1.17 ERA. I got to see his 9th start.

Oh well... at least I got a photo with Youppi.
