Luis Ayala wanted so badly to be the chief setup man for closer Joe Nathan, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Tuesday, that he asked to be traded once it became apparent that he couldn't have that role.
But the detail that might have cinched Ayala's departure from Minnesota was his admitted motivation for wanting the job: a better contract next year.
"When you walk into my office and say you don't like your role, and he talked about his contract for next year — you lose me right there," Gardenhire said one day after the Twins designated the right-handed reliever for assignment. "I'm talking about winning this year, and he's talking about, if he doesn't get in the right situations here, he's worried about his contract. You lose me right there. . . . We were talking about different things, and that's why he's out the door and another guy is here to pitch."
