Still clucking: San Diego Chicken now 35

GIANNOULAS FOR HOF! If only for the hilarious induction speech in which he awkwardly acknowledges Tommy Lasorda!

For 35 years, Ted Giannoulas has jumped and run - and flattened Barney - at ballparks across America, climbing into a feathered costume to go to work as the San Diego Chicken.

“It’s the one magic elixir that keeps me young,” he says.

Yet the bumps and bruises on Giannoulas, a native of London, Ont., don’t heal nearly as quickly as they used to. He is in the twilight of a long and lucrative career playing to audiences large and small, and acknowledged that this could be the San Diego Chicken’s final season.

The gigs aren’t there like they used to be. Nearly every team in the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB have their own licensed mascots - a trend inspired in part by the San Diego Chicken’s popularity so many years ago - and Giannoulas has cut back his schedule in recent years.

Down from a high of about 250 games each year in his heyday, Giannoulas said he’ll leave his San Diego home for just 50 appearances this summer.

“At the end of this season I’ll make a determination if I think I can go another season. I can’t say for certain. I’ll just see how my body feels, what my energy level might be going forward,” Giannoulas said. “The fun and energy is still at the ballpark. I still get a charge out of it.”

Being the San Diego Chicken - or the Famous Chicken, as he’s also called - might seem like an easy way to make a buck. In fact, Giannoulas expects to pull in six figures this summer (he won’t say how much).

But it’s a gruelling night of high-energy, slapstick comedy for the five-foot-four Giannoulas, whose suit gets so hot he jokes his “eggs come out hard-boiled.” And contrary to what many might believe, Giannoulas is the only one who’s ever worn it.

When I was a kid, I made it a point to beg my dad to come out to see the Chicken. Even in high school, my buddies and I went to see him every year.

I really wish he still came out to KC every year. Can't he get an understudy?

I'm sorry..."The San Diego Chicken"? That's an insult. He is The Famous San Diego Chicken.

When I lived in Nashville, I saw him on the Forth of July at a Sounds' game. I remember thinking that he probably could've been anywhere for the big holiday but he was there in tiny little Greer Stadium. He was pretty hilarious.

He is fabulous. I got to see him at Portland (Eastern League) a few years ago. It was a great day, actually; cold, rainy double header, with Josh Beckett bobblehead in the bargain.

I don't think I've ever seen the Chicken in person (even though I went to school in SD). But I do remember him from The Baseball Bunch. Saturday morning cartoons, The Baseball Bunch, TWIB, then the NBC game of the week...good times.

Greer Stadium! When I was a kid, they roped off chunks of the outfield to create extra "seating" on the Chicken days. Even with that, you had to be calling in early in the season to get tickets to see the Chicken.

He's good, but nothing will ever beat the day I watched Captain Dynamite (with the Dynamite Daughters) blow himself up in between games of a doubleheader at Ray Winder Field in Little Rock.

I went to that game with a friend and his wife (who hates baseball), and we made her sit through a 12- or 13-inning Game 1 in 90-degree weather just to wait for Captain Dynamite. I think if we had insisted that she stay for Game 2, they'd have been divorced by the 7th inning stretch.

Are there any scheduled doubleheaders this year? Anyone got tickets they'd like to sell me?

I think the Cubs will be playing a doubleheader.

I went to my high school reunion and talked to a guy who is now the backup "Slugerrrr", mascot for the Royals.

Apparently mascots make pretty good money. The Chiefs and Royals mascots each make six figures easily.

Could I have seen him on the Thrill Seekers c. 1975? Pretty savage way to make a living.

He made a few appearances on Memphis Wrestling during its heyday. He was a lovable heel.

I never really got the Chicken. I'm not a huge fan of zany, "wackball" humor though, so I'm meh on basically all mascots.

You weren't worried about the tongue?
