STL Post-Dispatch: Fawning over Edmonds was a Busch idea

OK, I’ll admit it. Cardinals fans were right; I was wrong. Of course it was the proper thing to do to stand and applaud Edmonds. Thanks for adjusting my attitude.

— Given the Cubs’ 33-10 record at home this season, it was no surprise to see them take the series opener on Friday. The loving reception for Edmonds gave the Cubs an immediate home-field advantage at Busch, and the visitors tapped into the pro-Cubs vibe.

— The Cubs increased their division lead over the Cardinals to 3 1/2 games.

But why get caught up in the standings? Jimmy Baseball was welcomed back into the tender embrace of baseball’s best fans.
...
Sorry to be negative on such a magnificent evening for Edmonds and the Cubs — but I’m down on Braden Looper. He had some nerve, striking Edmonds out twice instead of grooving batting-practice fastballs. Why not cap off the homecoming and give Edmonds a chance to homer?

Looper should have been booed off the mound for the failure to show Edmonds the proper respect.

Someone’s having a Mariotti moment, methinks.  So St. Louis fans gave Edmonds an ovation in St. Louis before his first AB.  That’s rather common fan behavior, and seemingly unworthy of the amount of attention placed upon it by LaRussa and Post-Dispatch writers.

Bernie Miklasz is a massive tool, and I do mean literally massive.

So wait. The fans cheering for Edmonds in his first at bat is why the Cubs won tonight?

The cheers for Edmonds dwindled significantly with each at bat. This is worse than Mariotti. I don't think he's ever blamed the fans' reaction to something as the deciding factor in a game.

Given that it is accepted fact that the fans in Saint Louis are the greatest fans in the world, clearly, the default position is that their actions were correct, and that Miklasz and LaRussa are worthless tools.

Then again, given that it is also the default position that Miklasz and LaRussa are worthless tools, we can safely skip a step in getting to the right answer.

I don't remember there being so much concern for visiting fans being too vocal when Cardinals fans swarmed on KC last weekend.

For such a good team, the Cardinals fans are a bunch of whiny crybabies* who don't deserve the one of the best managers in Baseball or a winning year. Royals fans would sell testicles to be so good, and the BFIBies constantly whine about how they're not better, or falling short.

(* - idk if they were so whiny before Whitey cried his way through game 7)

This is nothing new. Ray Lankford, who Cardinals fans--who may be the Greatest Fans in America, but are not the Greatest Understanders of High-K Slugger Value in America--rode mercilessly for his last two or three years in St. Louis, got a hero's welcome with the Padres. And Lankford was no Edmonds.

Miklasz made up this whole "boo Edmonds" thing to be funny, no one was ever going to do it. Ignore this entire "controversy," please.

I'm a Cubs fan, and am a little uneasy rooting for Edmonds, but the St. Louis crowd honored one of their recent stars nicely. And, I think Mr. Edmonds stepped back out of the box and wiped tears away (maybe not, but it looked like it). It was a nice tribute from the St. Louis crowd. I hope he goes 4-4 tomorrow. ; )

Miklasz is also underplaying the very real cheer him and get him out of his game angle. When Pedro Martinez came back to Fenway in a Mets uniform, Red Sox management showed tributes to him on the CF board the day *before* he started against the Sox. They practically encouraged fans to cheer for him. And Pedro lapped it all up then went out and got destroyed by the Sox. Edmonds didn't play well either. Maybe the fans are more clever than Miklasz.

I don't see how there was any other option except for cheering for Edmonds. The four options is a rousing cheer, a subdued cheer, ignore him or boo him, and any option other than a rousing cheer is just pure ignorance. The guy spent 8 seasons in St Louis, playing at a hof level for 6 of those seasons, is widely attributed to being the backbone of the team that did win the world series. I know people like to complain about his uniform choice, but so what, it's a profession, and he has to do what he feels is right. Edmonds doesn't like the new Busch stadium and wisely chose to go to a stadium that he feels he can perform well in. Smart guy, smart decision.

I'm a Cubs fan, and am a little uneasy rooting for Edmonds

Since joining the Cubs, he has gone .283/.379/.566/.945, good for a 142 OPS+.

The only thing to be uneasy about is the huge SPLAT that will be heard when he finally falls back to earth.

Until then -- Enjoy!

St. Louisan Gene Frederic, who was an All-America center at Memphis U., is a starting offensive lineman for the San Jose Sabercats in the Arena Football League.

I didn't know Memphis had a football program. See? Not a complete waste of time and bits.

Royals fans would sell testicles to be so good

I think this statement would carry more weight if you specified whether or not you are refering to their own testicles.

Mike Lowell will take one, please.
