STL Post-Dispatch: Ludwick’s home run rescues Cardinals

[Anthony] Reyes didn’t win Sunday afternoon at McAfee Coliseum; however, the Cardinals did, 10-6. They survived because Reyes stiffened after a five-run, [4]-hit first inning reminded him why he had spent three weeks at Triple-A Memphis… Reyes followed a traumatic start with four shutout frames.
...
Reyes called his stuff “hit and miss.” There was much more hit than miss early. But with about a dozen scouts looking on, what might have become a disaster instead became a show of resilience.

“He showed a lot of toughness. He didn’t cave in,” manager Tony La Russa said.
...
“I wasn’t nervous,” Reyes said. “It was just a different setting. It’s different pitching up here than pitching down there.”
...
Needing 101 pitches to get 15 outs, Reyes pitched around consecutive walks that loaded the bases in the third and dodged a two-out double in the fourth.

Reyes’ final line: 5IP, 7H, 5R, 3SO, 3BB, 2HBP
So were the scouts there to look at Reyes? Rolen? One of the A’s?

what can scouts really learn from sitting at a game rather than watching it on TV or checking the metrics that exist in today's game? Other than defensive positioning/jumps, I'm not sure what there really is at this point.

Well, they can get velocity readings that are accurate to within 5 MPH, which is rarely the case with the televised velocity. Positioning, jumps, and subtle mechanics that you can't really see from the CF camera that consists of 90% of the telecast are probably pretty big, and scouts also definitely like to look at body language.

TV cameras, especially the CF shot that has become more or less standard, don't always give you the best read on mechanics.

Do scouts also pay attention to pregame activities, e.g. batting practice or bullpen sessions (which I suppose aren't pregame)?
