STL Post-Dispatch: Wainwright’s role up in air

Carpenter, who was removed from Sunday’s game after feeling discomfort in his right triceps, met with Dr. George Paletta and was diagnosed with a muscle strain in his posterior shoulder, the area on the backside of the shoulder near the joint. The club released a statement late Tuesday night saying a scan showed no damage to Carpenter’s rotator cuff.

The righthander will rejoin the team in Florida, though he will miss his start and it’s not clear when he will next throw even a bullpen session. Several team officials declined to characterize the news.

Wainwright, who has been rehabbing to rejoin the team as a reliever, will start Saturday for Class AA Springfield, and his pitch count will increase to 65 or 70 pitches. The Cardinals pushed his start back one day and elevated his pitch count to get him ready in case he’s needed as a starting pitcher. Facing uncertainty with Carpenter, the Cardinals want Wainwright to be available for either role — starter or, potentially, closer.

The Cardinals enter Wednesday four games out of the wild card.

If we make him a reliever I have lost all faith in the intelligence of this organization. Jesus H. Christ.

Yes, it's not like the weakest link in the rotation is a guy who's been a reliever for most of his major league career . . .

Posterior of the shoulder and NOT rotator cuff? How exactly does that work?

Posterior of the shoulder and NOT rotator cuff?

Read head of the deltoid? There ARE other muscles in the shoulder other than the rotator cuff.
