STLtoday: Caesar: Some media blow it by targeting Pujols

“I’m an idiot, a freakin’ idiot”...and I knew enough not to run the original “The List”.

The Pujols chatter came from WNBC-TV in New York, which cited “two sources” as providing it with the list — which then was posted on CNBC’s website.

In St. Louis, while some media outlets either mildly touched on the rumor or didn’t report it at all, the Riverfront Times put it on its website and KTVI (Channel 2) went full-bore with the story. It devoted the bulk of its 11 a.m. newscast to coverage of Pujols and others with Cardinals ties, including Darryl Kile. As it turned out, both were not on Mitchell’s list.

KTVI opened with anchor Kevin Steincross telling viewers of a “leaked’’ list that included Pujols’ name. Sports director Martin Kilcoyne added that Pujols was the headliner on the list and the inclusion of Kile’s name is “a bit of a surprise.”

Whoever made up that fake list is a true #######. Throwing Darryl Kile on there was pretty loathsome.

KTVI's Smith is well aware of the changing landscape.

"You can take the safe route, one that is noncombative and not aggressive," he said. "But in today's environment, I'm not sure we have the luxury to do that. And the Fox (network) brand allows us a little more latitude. There's a certain sense of edginess and aggressiveness.

"Days like this are fun because it forces you as a journalist, and a manager, to make decisions that aren't easy. If you want to have your button-up newscast packaged with a bow, there are stations in town that do it and have been doing it for 25 years. But their ratings are going down; ours are going up. There was a time and place when stations would have been reluctant to put something on the air'' like this. "But with the Internet, sports-talk radio and cable, viewers are better served getting more voices giving context. That's what we try to provide.''

Thank you, Mr. #########, for so eloquently describing the other reason that I would never be caught watching Fox News.

Those comments are incredible - thus rendering the station uncredible.

Why bother watching that station anymore?

Sparkles:

Albert is harmed by two things. His appearance which ties to the commonly held perceptions around the use of PEDS. And that his manager is linked with numerous players known to have used PEDS.

I know folks think I just look to take shots at Tony. But the fact is that while everyone and their cousin on the player side has gotten hammered LaRussa has escaped any scrutiny. And to me that is wrong.

Tony is a smart guy. He is legendary for knowing his clubhouse. There is no way anyone can convince me that Tony didn't know SOMETHING.

And I think any Cardinals fan who believes that LaRussa had no idea is either being willfully ignorant or just plain foolish.

Any fan of any team who thinks their manager and probably GM didn't know is being naive. Everyone knew. No one cared.

As for Fox news, I see we are reporting things not to be right or for a good story, but for ratings.

If they want Pujols, they just need to get Dave McKay to flip.

Harvey, I think you need to read this article and my response to it and then try to tell me if you think #3 was an appropriate response to it. Even if I did buy that Tony was any more complicit in the PED era than the managers of the other 29 teams, I wouldn't accept that a simple association with him is grounds to just assume that he's a PED user, whip up a fake list with his name on it, and shop it around to the national media.

What was LaRussa going to do, though? Tell Canseco and McGwire to stop injecting steroids or he was going to tell the press about it?

If a TV station can't say I'm sorry, why should a player?

Now who is being naive? Doesn't this describe nearly all news outlets. MSNBC ran the list as well, only pulling it after an MLB insider told them it was hogwash. I agree that the quotes are loathsome, but it is simply stating what is the practice at news stations and networks around the country.

I didn't word that one right, I meant that as a generalization of the whole media not just Fox.

I'm relieved that Kile wasn't on 'the list'. Even if he had been implicated, it would have been pointless to include him; just caused his family additional grief. Whoever created the fake list should be held accountable...doubtful that it will happen.

Whitey Herzog traded a former MVP who was a drug addict.
So there is a precedent.

Man, those White Rat Cardinal teams had druggies all over the place. Lonnie Smith, Andujar, Darrell Porter, Templeton...

As for Albert, I don't get it. He's a big dude, but it's not like he looks like a drug freak. His neck is pretty normal and his ass is kinda pudgy. Isn't HGH, the one most people rail about, supposed to create lean muscle mass?

Don't get me started on that So Taguchi, though.

I wonder if Pujols would prefer that people ascribe his premature hair loss to steroid usage, or to the fact that he's 36 years old.

That's not really a very good precedent. The worry about those drugs was that it would make players worse. One can pretend to be all morally upright, but trading him away was actually a form of self-protection. The worry about PEDs is that they'll make players better. Trading suspected steroid users away would sabotage one's team.
