Strasburg allows 2 hits in spring debut

Top prospect Stephen Strasburg made his spring training debut on Tuesday, pitching two scoreless innings in the Washington Nationals’ 9-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Strasburg threw 15 of his 27 pitches for strikes and allowed two hits, successive two-out singles by Don Kelly and Alex Avila in the second. But the right-hander finished off Brent Dlugach with a bending, 81 mph breaking ball for an inning-ending strikeout.

Don’t worry, Stephen. Even Matt Wieters only hit .288 in his rookie year.

Yeah, 2 scoreless, but his club lost the game. Clearly he is no Jack Morris.

I've seen Strasburg pitch once, and in that outing his breaking ball impressed me even more than his fastball. He's nasty.

You can't stop Brent Dlugach. You can only hope to contain him.

We cannot allow such blasphemy to go unpunished. Brainstorm, people!

What's the plan for Strasburg? Is he likely to break camp with the team or go down for seasoning (AKA delaying his FA/arbitration clock)?

What's the plan for Strasburg?

It's nearly certain he will open in the minors.

Can you blame these guys for wanting a kajillion dollar signing bonus?

I can't wait for Strasburg vs. Wieters in interleague play. It will likely lead to irrefutable observational proof of the Higgs Boson.

a spring training start is "impressive"? really? sorry, nice performance or whatever you want to believe, but it's a spring training performance, and an early one at that, nobody who knows anything about baseball should look at first 3 weeks of spring training and attach any significance to a performance.

Does signing a major league contract upon being drafted affect service time?
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: March 10, 2010 at 04:31 AM (#3476258)
12....yes

but there are a lot of variables involved there.
   14. Chris Needham Posted: March 10, 2010 at 04:39 AM (#3476265)
It doesn't affect service time, but it does start his option clock. Not that that's going to matter with him.

Strasburg's contract is such that they're not going to monkey around with him too much. Out-year raises are already built into the contract, so there's no reason to keep him down to save some bucks.

They'll probably keep him down just long enough so they get an extra year out of him on the back end... so what? 3 weeks or so?

It's also possible they'll throw a bone to their minor league affiliates and let him tour each stop for a few starts, raking in the dough. I know the Low-A team near here is already marketing open-ended Strasburg ticket plans, for example.

Nobody is putting him in the Hall or anything, but this was the first outing against legitimate pro hitters for the most hyped pitching prospect in years, so there is a bit of significance there, which is why there were media people from as far away as Japan there to watch him.

He was overthrowing a bit, but the stuff is nasty. When he harnesses his control a bit he's going to be tough, so don't be too dismissive.

As for the rest of the Nats pitchers going out there right now, they might as well be batting practice coaches.
