Sun-Times: Zambrano unsure he’ll return to World Classic

Four of the biggest-name players in Venezuela have pulled out of next spring’s World Baseball Classic over a team power squabble, dealing a possible blow to the stature of the fledgling tournament.

And a fifth marquee player from that country could be next: Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano, who said Wednesday he’s not sure whether he’ll play.

‘‘I don’t know,’’ said Zambrano, who pitched in the inaugural WBC in 2006. ‘‘I haven’t made a decision.’‘

New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana and Detroit Tigers All-Stars Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez told Venezuelan media they won’t return to the team after playing in 2006. The players reportedly are blaming the Venezuelan tournament committee for problems getting enough tickets and hotel rooms for families, for shoddy organization that led to at least one instance of Burger King postgame meals and for the return of unsuccessful manager Luis Sojo without consulting some of the team members.

“Burger King postgame meals”?  Ok, ok…so the Rodeo Cheeseburger was crap…just remember, One Nation Under Chicken Fries!

I once lived in England where Burger King was considered a gourmet establishment, only surpassed when a Pizza Hut opened up.

Good. International exhibitions suck.

This sucks! I love the WBC, and Venezuela was such a potentiall awesome team. I'm so sick of people being scolded for enjoying things on this site.

It was interesting last year how the "Major League" squads of USA, DR, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico all underperformed. Korea was fricking awesome they way they kept beating Japan until the semi-finals. Cuba and their team of impoverished all-stars taking out the multi-millionaire celebrity Los Dominicanos was a great story.

Go WBC!

I once lived in England where Burger King was considered a gourmet establishment, only surpassed when a Pizza Hut opened up.

I was just reading yesterday about Pizza Hut trying to expand delivery in China as they think it will be a growing business as Chinese workers have less time to come home and cook family meals these days. Apparently their actual restaurants are advertised as "five star food at a three star price." There was some other stuff in there about the way their locations operate in China. It all led me to this image of Chinese families getting dressed up for a special night out at a Pizza Hut that utilizes all the finery of top restaurants.

And I think that image is actually pretty accurate.

Miguel Cabrera? Magglio Ordonez? Carlos Guillen? Why does Jim Leyland hate Venezuela?

I hate the all-star game, too (OK, this year's was awesome). So shoot me.

As a fan of Baseball and the WBC, I think this SUCKS. As a fan of AMERICA, though, who is in the same pool as Venezuela (and Canada, and Italy), I like this. Our team will probably be pretty good anyway (it's a proven fact that Americans only care about international competition if we lose, which we did in the first WBC), but I'm worried about being in the same pool as Venezuela and Canada (since Canada will be on it's home turf in Toronto). But if Venezuela is in disarray, we are gonna be in pretty good shape.

Agreed. Its outside of his job description.

I don't understand that argument. I'm going to the opera tonight; that's outside of my job description too, but I'm doing it anyways, because I like to do things when I'm not working.

I fail to see how this relates to whether he should do it or not.

From what is said in the article they aren't refusing to play because they don't feel like participating, they're refusing to play because the organization by their country's committee sucked last time and they don't think it'll be better.

That tears it! Time for regime change in Venezeuela. Hugo Chavez can do what he likes to the middle class in his country, he can forcibly nationalize whatever industry he chooses, but I will be damned if he compromises the international exhibition of America's past time.

I don't understand this argument. Do you work at an opera house? Maybe Carlos doesn't feel like working on his time off.

This analogy blows, for reasons that should be pretty obvious.
