TBO.com: Crawford to DL, Baldelli activated

Baldelli was activated from the 60-day disabled list today and will start today’s game in right field. He replaces Carl Crawford, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right middle finger tendon subluxation—an injury suffered on a checked swing in his final at-bat last night. The injury is at the base of his middle finger, at the joint that connects it to the hand.

No other injury has done anything to slow down the team so far this season, I don’t expect this will either.

Crawford's actually been the Rays' biggest disappointment this year.

Batting average way down, doubles non-existent, OPS+ of 93. Still great on the bases, but... not a great loss for Tampa, assuming Baldelli can fill the void.

Using some combination of Gross, Baldelli, and Ruggiano in the outfield corners with Hinske not playing there any more often than he has so far should avoid any significant defensive hit, which is where Crawford's current production could be missed. Simply matching or even improving on his offense should of course be pretty simple.

Of course, the question is whether Baldelli will last the 15 days until Crawford can come back. I wish I were kidding.

OK, after reading the article, Crawford may miss more time than that, but still, if Baldelli plays it may not be a huge loss, but that's not a given.

No matter if Baldelli stays "healthy" he's not expected to be able to play full time, is he?

Baldelli may play more with Crawford going down, though they've never given the impression that he'll play everyday. He should start every game against lefties, who he has always hit really well against, and sometimes against righties. Not sure though now with Crawford being out but I'm sure that Baldelli's health is going be the priority regardless.

The guys on the Tampa broadcast today were saying they didn't think Baldelli would be able to play back-to-back days. Does anyone know if that's actually true? They're going to be facing lefties on both Thursday and Friday (Dallas Braden and Matt Harrison, according to the ESPN schedule).

there's been talk baldelli will be playing some games in the field, some games from DH, but that it's day to day to monitor his fatigue.

jim is right - the only place rays will miss crawford is defensively. hinske is brutal in LF.

I suspect they'll be able to DH him one of the games, but he probably can't play full days in the field two days in a row yet.

And Kazmir hasn't pitched through the fifth in his last two starts, and hasn't gotten into the sixth in three.

Wheels. Coming. Off. Maybe?

It seems the AL East's Big 3 are in a competition to see who can have the most key players get injured in August.

Wheels coming off would imply that they aren't still winning, which hasn't happened yet.

Well, they haven't actually had to play many games yet with both of them out, have they?

If Coop had said, "Wheels. About. To. Come. Off" that might be debatable. But it's hard to see using the present tense when the Rays keep building their lead. Especially since they won the first three games in Longoria's absence.

Hopefully not, and it's starting to get a bit late for a collapse anyway, as they're 6 games up on a playoff spot with the second-best record in the league.

Anyway, they can't collapse: when I was in Vegas in March I put $100 on them to win the World Series, at 250-1 odds.

I nearly put $200 on them -- had the other $100 in my hand but sanity prevailed. Still kicking myself for that moment of sanity. But it'll be a fun World Series if they make it.

Ray, you've got a decent shot at picking up $25K for 2 minutes of "work". Don't beat yourself up too badly.

Also, I agree with you about it getting a little late for a collapse. In order for them to miss the playoffs, they need to tank AND have two of Minnesota, Boston, and New York go nuts. I can't really see it happening, unless they start channelling the spirit of the 90s Angels.

New personal record. That (mine) was the most wishy-washy comment I have ever been called to the carpet on. Maybe.
