Team Marketing Report’s 2008 MLB Fan Cost Index

Recession?  What recession? Major league teams expect fans to shell out a lot more dough this season.

Average tickets up 10.9 percent to $25.40; FCI up 8.3 percent to $191.75

For now, the Red Sox have the highest average ticket price in the game, $48.80.  The Yankees are significantly behind, at $36.58, but they had the biggest increase in 2007 and I wouldn’t be surprised if the evil empire challenges the Red Sox for ticket price supremacy next season.  The Cubs are #2, at $42.49.  Arizona has the cheapest average ticket price, at $15.96.

Kansas City has the cheapest beer, at $4, while state rival St. Louis has the most expensive beer, at $8.50.  The average beer is $6.11.

The lead-in's wrong. Pittsburgh has the cheapest beer, followed by Philly. Boston's beer costs almost twice as much as St. Louis. You need to do a $/oz calculation.

As a Jays fan, I'm suprised that the team is 5th in overall cost. Of course, if you get a StarPass and bring food in, you're paying practically nothing for as much baseball as you want, so I'm not complaining.

Well, you do have to consider that the Canadian dollar is up about 15 to 20 % against the US dollar since last season, which means about a $40 bump in the rankings over last year. In terms of price to Canadians, it's not really different from last year.

This annual cost-for-a-family-of-four report is the lamest of the year after the productivity-lost-to-march-madness BS.

It depends. I rarely have more than one beer at a game, so the out-of-pocket cost is what matters to me. I only want 12 or 16 ounces anyway, so it does me no good if they charge less per ounce but force me to buy 24 of them.

For heavier drinkers, yes, the $/oz. is what tells the tale.

As Boots said, I think the cost of a beer or a soda or a hot dog is relevant to a lot of people, since people are often happy with just a serving, no matter how much is in a serving. The food industry has taken advantage of that by increasing portions and prices over the last 40 years to increase its profits, but we really don't need supersized foods.

Unless, of course, it's Schaefer beer, which used to be advertised on Channel 9 Mets telecasts as "the one beer to have when you're having more than one."

at Fenway once I got to the front of the beer line, and the lady at the counter left and had to talk to someone, leaving me with a long wait. As a form of apology she poured me a free beer, but i had to drink it right away so as not to walk away with more than the limit of 2. so I chugged it while she poured the 2 I paid for.

Speaking from experience, you'll find that happens more and more as you chug beers, whether paid for or no.

As long as we're on pointless ballpark stories...
My company got a chartered bus to take us to a Giants game at Pac Bell a few years ago, and most us got trashed on the way of course. Shortly after we got in, I had to take a leak so bad, and the lines were out of control. After a while, I needed to take a leak more desperately than ever before in my life and still didn't have any relief in sight. So I left the line to wander around and was seriously gonna find a corner someplace and desecrate the facility. I'm not a habitual public urinist by any means, so this decision did not come easily. But as I wandered, I found myself under the outfield bleachers someplace and there was a restroom that had urinals as far as the I could see...and nobody else was there. It was truly an act of divine intervention, and if you ever have to piss at Pac Bell, you know where to go.

Absolutely the best leak of my life, and I'll never forget it.

The seats in Chase that drive down the average ticket price aren't worth what they cost.
