Texas Rangers need apology to sign Kenny Rogers

Jeez...still holding that silly appearence on The Bobby Goldsboro Show against me. Get over it!

Like his general manager did a day earlier,Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks said Wednesday that under “certain circumstances,” he would welcome a fourth marriage between the club and free agent pitcher Kenny Rogers.

Hicks also made clear what those “certain circumstances” would entail: Some degree of a public apology from Rogers for the way his last tour with the Rangers ended in 2005.

“He’s got to take care of some unfinished business,” Hicks said. “He’s got to apologize.”

Why on earth would a 43-year-old pitcher choose to make a public apology in order to play for an 87-loss team in a hitter's park?

It's not like Texas will be his only option. The guy's been an all-star in three of the past four seasons.

What does he need to apologize for again?

Does "I'm sorry you're a pathetic loser who can't let things go" work for everybody here? Yeah? Good.

-O, Kenny will apologise.

Apologise.

If he doesn't, some folks may consider him the coward of the county.

He'll just drop in to see what condition Hicks' condition is in.

Is that even legal?

What exactly happened here? Was there a handshake or something that Rogers backed out on?

First ARod, now this. Fine, I want an apology from Mike Lowell before he resigns.

He went apeshit and attacked a camera man in Arlington before a game. His apology was half-assed to say the least. There was also a time when there was a deal to send Rogers to the Reds. He had a no trade clause, the Rangers weren't going anywhere, and Rogers was to become a free agent at the end of the year. Rogers vetoed the trade. Despite all his success in Texas, many fans still "hate" him.

He is the winningest pitcher in Rangers' history. For some odd reason (probably that as a LHP he induces a lot of groundballs), he has pitched well in Arlington. I think this would be his fourth stint with the Rangers. Maybe they are co-dependent?

Is Rogers a jerk? Or just a jerk to the media? I ask that honestly, because I though he had a reputation in the 1990s as someone who was generally well liked by teammates.

Rogers was seen as a pretty good and likable guy here in Texas until the cameraman incident. Like so many other sports incidents, the public's perception can be colored by a single incident (Robin Ventura, for example, was always booed heartily in Texas). If the Rangers re-sign him, there will be a great outcry, at least from the local sportswriters. If he performs well, he might get back into their/our good graces.

Incidentally, this story was also reported in the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I was delighted to see that the FWST's writer's name is Anthony Andro. I hope that he does a retrospective on Mark McGwire's career at some point.

He was generally liked by the fans in Texas. The Reds veto was overlooked by the time he came back. I think that the media would have a hard time forgetting what he did. There is more to this story than what I previously mentioned. Somebody in the organization leaked to the press that Rogers was faking an injury to miss a start and pad his stats. Many in the media ran with this story without checking the validity. Of course, if you want to know if this is true, you ask Rogers. If he says, "no", well that is also the response of a guilty man. Was the camera man the guy who leaked this lie? No. Was the camera man the author who ripped Rogers in the press? No. Did somebody deserve to be punched? Probably. I'd like to see Rogers back with or without the apology. He could teach a lot to the lefties in the organization (CJ Wilson, Kam Lowe, Kason Gabbord).

This sounds like an Onion headline. "Rangers sign Kenny Rogers for $15 million, apology."

After the cameraman incident, he half-assedly apologized to the fans, his teammates, his family, the cameraman - everyone except the team.
