The 25 Best Rickey Henderson Stories of All Time

What do you want? It’s Rickey!  Not much startlingly new in here for long-time collectors of anecdotal Rickey, but a wonderful compilation.  I hadn’t heard this one:

14) I didn’t believe this one at first. However, I emailed a few contacts within the Sox organization and they claim it actually happened. This is priceless, it really is.

The morning after the Sox finished off their 2004 World Series sweep against St. Louis, Henderson called someone in the organization looking for tickets to Game 6 at Fenway Park.

And my personal favorite…

19) During a contract holdout with Oakland in the early 1990s, Henderson said, “If they want to pay me like Mike Gallego, I’ll play like Gallego.”

3) In the early 1980s, the Oakland A’s accounting department was freaking out. The books were off $1 million. After an investigation, it was determined Rickey was the reason why. The GM asked him about a $1 million bonus he had received and Rickey said instead of cashing it, he framed it and hung it on a wall at his house.

I heard Rickey tell this one on some ESPN radio interview once, maybe on like Mike & Mike. It's my favorite.

It could be posted once a week and never get old.

I heard on a documentary once that some local television station somewhere used to run It's a Wonderful Life every afternoon in the '60s. Anybody know anything about that?

Yeah I have seen this here many times. Always welcome, though.

Okay, wisenheimers, I see that it was posted in December '08, but there's no other hit on it when using site: in Google (as opposed to the site search here.) And if you think Rickey is okay with Rickey stories being posted just once, you don't know Rickey. Rickey will tell you when Rickey storytime is done, which will not be before the number of dupes reaches Rickey!. Rickey! is a mathematical variable (because Rickey is never constant), but it is not a factorial; though Rickey is equal to the combined product of all who came before him, the ! is the abbreviation of "awesome" (in Rickeynese.)
