The Daily Yomiuri: Japan can’t be blind to doping

Out of the Statesboro Blues…McTell me more blind items.

But Tyrone Woods of the Japan Series champion Chunichi Dragons, a three-time homer champ, told Hard Drives that testing here is lenient.

“I think having the testing is good, but it could be more strict,” Woods said by phone from his home in Florida.

“Why not test the whole team? It’s a random thing,” chimed Woods, who said his name was drawn twice this past season.

When quizzed about the possibility of some Japanese players using performance-enhancing substances, Woods was confident the sport here is clean.

“I don’t think so. You may have had a couple, but not now since the start of testing.

“The simple fact is that you can look at a guy’s production level and you can tell who is on steroids and who has been. If the numbers decline….”

Dear Japan, Thanks for the all star quality players. In return were giving you everything that's wrong with the way we play the game of baseball.

Merry Christmas!

P.S. Any interest in Roger Clemens?

Japan's given us one All Star quality player in a very long time, with a bunch of mediocrity thrown in. In return we've given them a ton of 4A players who rate as All Star quality in Japan and we threw in a little steroid hysteria to balance things out.

I wouldn't call Nomo, Saito, Sasaki, Johjima, Hideki or Matsuzaka mediocrity.

Otsuka, Okajima, and a few other useful ones out of Ohka, Iwamura, and the 2008 crop that just signed.

Somebody's probably either confirmed or refuted this already, but it wouldn't surprise me all that much if the average productivity of the Japanese players is as good or better than the overall MLB average, at least since Ichiro showed up. But maybe I just haven't been paying much attention to the roster fillers.

Takatsu had a great year too, and he was about 60 years old.

The average 4A player hasn't done real well in Japan either.

“The simple fact is that you can look at a guy’s production level and you can tell who is on steroids and who has been. If the numbers decline....”

Well, I'm glad that's straightened out!
