The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (And It’s Pretty Ugly): 2007 Orioles Offense, Position-by-Position

Lyrical, imaginative, beautifully crafted, and deeply intelligent…it’s Kerry’s Calculus and The Book of Dead Birds.

As bad as things have been for Orioles left fielders historically, 2007 represented a new low.  As mentioned above, Jay Payton had the lion’s share of the playing time in left field last year—roughly 2/3 of it—and Jay Gibbons had most of the rest.  Payton qualified for the major league left field grid with 470 plate appearances, far above the threshold of 300; Gibbons just barely missed (290 plate appearances).  Payton wasn’t on the bottom of the list, but he had far more plate appearances than anyone around him.  The player on the list closest to Payton with a PA total anywhere near his (or higher) was Jason Bay, who finished 136 OWP points higher than Payton.  The only players on the list below him were Reed Johnson, who was a baby step away from Jay Gibbons in terms of qualifying (17 more plate appearances—big deal) and Craig Monroe and his train wreck of a season.

How bad a season did Payton have?  Only three times in O’s history has a left fielder accumulated at least 300 plate appearances and finished the season with an OWP below .400.  B.J. Surhoff (.321 OWP in 324 PAs) did it in 2005 and Dick Williams (.261 OWP in 340 PAs) pulled it off in 1961.  So, Payton’s mark is the second worst in the history of the Orioles among these qualifiers.  Note that Payton played far more than either Surhoff or Williams.  He’s the only left fielder in club history to eclipse 350 plate appearances and finish with an OWP below .400.  In the history of the American League, among left fielders with at least 450 plate appearances, Payton’s 2007 season was the seventh worst all-time.  (The worst ever, by a significant margin, is Brian L. Hunter’s 1999 season, which he split between Detroit and Seattle—.256 OWP in 527 plate appearances.)

"The lion's share" is "everything", not "most of it".[/losing battle]

No, the lion's share is the majority.

I thought it was the majority too (i.e. whatever isn't left for the hyenas).

steroid belt: is it a literary reference? What's the deal?

"Lion's Share", from Aesop. Wikipedia says:

In the fable, a lion, fox, jackal and wolf go hunting, successfully killing a deer. It is divided into four parts with the lion taking the first quarter because he is king of the beasts, the second quarter because he is the arbiter of which animals get what portions of the deer, the third quarter because of his help in catching the deer, and the fourth quarter for his superior strength.

In some variants of the fable, the lion only takes three-quarters of the deer and lets the other animals fight over the remaining quarter.

Edit: My collection of Aesopan fables (Babrius and Phaedrus) has Phaedrus' version, in which the Lion takes all, with a moral about the value of ruthlessness (!). In the appendix there is a version in which the lion and the fox are sharing. The fox divides the meat into a tiny scrap and a huge pile. The lion then chooses the huge pile and commends the fox for his wise division.

Hey Baltimore people, I have a random question: I visited Baltimore recently. While driving through the crummy sections, (There seemed to be many) I noticed that every other corner had a samll eatery featuring "Lake Trout." I was already full from the local crabcakes and did not partake. What manner of delicacy is "Lake Trout" and how is it presented?

Thanks again,

I told me it was a losing battle.

Webster's defines it as "the largest portion."

I never thought of it as the whole thing, but reading over the Aesop comment, I guess it could be.

This is not the discussion I expected but much less depressing than actually discussing the Orioles. I am a bit surprised that the Lion's share did not consist of the deer, the fox, the jackal, and the wolf.

I'm discussing this because I never thought it could mean anything other than most of something, but I guess it could.

Being an O's fan, it seems like on the Internets the Bedard to Seattle trade is going to happen. The M's have asked Adam Jones to return home from Venezuela, so they are speculating this is a precursor to the deal. Of course, this could also be idle speculation. I know, idle speculation on the Internet, SHOCKING!

Somebody here doesn't watch The Wire.
For shame!

Also, I've always taken the Lion's Share to mean almost everything.

Lake trout (aka whiting, also sometimes called "weakfish") is generally prepared by taking the main bone out, leaving the skin on, and frying the sucker, serving them with ketchup, horseradish, and sometimes mayonnaise, +lemon, etc.

It's very popular on the West Side, and the raw fish are usually the best-sellers in city markets on payday Fridays and/or stamp days. I can recall one area "Soul Food Restaurant" (actual name of the place) would go through 20 pounds a day on weekdays, and order up to 150 pounds of the fish on Friday.

It used to be around $1.29 a pound, now probably more like $2, for the raw, uncleaned fish (and if we didn't like you, we'd just take the heads off fish and gut them.)

/Sold fish at Johnny's Seafood in the Hollins Market for a while, not too far from where David Simon's "The Corner" was set.
//I believe all the city fish markets are owned by Koreans now, save for Cross Street, of course.

Typical of an article on the Orioles these days: they're so hapless nobody wants to talk about them, they'd rather talk about local foodstuffs.
Probably just as well.
Last years team was mostly unwatchable;
Keep Markakis, Roberts, Loewen and Guthrie, trade Bedard while you can get something of value and then blow up the rest of the team. Maybe a couple of those guys they got for Tejada will turn into someting one day.

I think 2008 is finaly the year Tampa Bay beats the O's for 4th place in the division.

What about Cabrera? I know he had a miserable year last season but the man has a golden arm and he's still pretty young. He must be frustrating to watch but he could still put it all together.

Guess you shouldn't depend on 'The Wire' or 'Homicide' for your directions.

It's not only idle; it's out of date. Jones is back in the lineup in Venezuela.

Whatever; apparently MacFail has already decided that one of the key parts to any Bedard trade is to acquire a 31-year old middle reliever.
