The Juice Blog: Carroll: Who?

As the great floating head of Watson Pritchard once said..."They’re coming for me now… and then they’ll come for you!”

But inside the industry, there are a lot of people I do know. Mostly, it’s because I’ve done radio with them in either direction. I’ve met them at the Winter Meetings, at least a lot of the beat writers. They’re actually considering BP for membership in the BBWAA this year, which should be interesting. I don’t think we’ll get in, but it’s nice to at least get a foot in the door. With newspapers collapsing, I wonder where the BBWAA will be in ten years. Someone I really respect and admire talked with me on the phone today about whether there might be a fit for him at BP. I wish I could hire the guy, because he’s the top in the field, but I don’t have that kind of influence at BP and he won’t come cheap. In this economy, it could be anyone. Murray Chass isn’t at the Times, Gordon Edes isn’t at the Globe, and who knows who’s next.

There’s a lot of great writers out there, solid writers and thinkers and hard workers. In a crowd like this, you probably wouldn’t say “who?” if I mentioned Alex Belth, Matthew Leach, Aaron Gleeman, Eric Seidman, or Sam Mellinger. But is anyone the next Peter Gammons, or is that like asking who the next Sandy Koufax is? The next Tracy Ringolsby? The next Michael Lewis? (I have an idea about that ...) And moreover, where will they be writing?

Who will I say “who?” about next? And who am I missing?

Can I vote for myself? :)

At some point Will Carroll has to stop writing things and then publishing them, right?
   3. The Josecruz Blues (GGC) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 09:13 AM (#3012917)
It won't be me. My occasional writings are about long ago events not the here and now. Too, I might be on some BPro enemy list for all I know. I have written stuff here way back in the past and some of them may have elephantine memories.

I vote for Shooty!

"And who am I missing?"

Pete Rose, IIRC.

I suppose that out of the list that Will has in this blurb, I'd pick Aaron Gleeman. The dude is young, dedicated, already has a gig at Rotoworld and NBC and is actually one of the nicest guys I met (maybe it's a Minnesota thing.) Never heard of LEach or Mellinger, so I can't comment on them.
   7. Repoz Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:29 AM (#3012988)
Jon... Leach writes for MLB.com (Cards beat) and Mellinger toils at the K.C. Star (unless he got nailed in the buyouts).

BP in the BBWAA? There's a notion to turn around in your head for a while.
   9. Craig Calcaterra Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:51 PM (#3013081)
The next Michael Lewis? (I have an idea about that ...)

Does becoming the next Michael Lewis get you Tabatha Soren privileges? Because if it does, I am definitely re-tooling my book proposal to say that "it's like Moneyball, only . . ."
   10. Colin Wyers Posted: November 20, 2008 at 12:56 PM (#3013088)
She might require certain concessions first, Craig.

BP in the BBWAA? Calcaterra book proposal?

I miss Jimmy Powers...
   12. The Josecruz Blues (GGC) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 01:01 PM (#3013096)
Are you really working on a book proposal, Craig? I've started one, but it requires a lot more work at the moment.
   13. The Josecruz Blues (GGC) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 01:46 PM (#3013135)
FWIW, a commenter at Baseball Toaster mentioned Pete Abraham. Personally, I basically use this place almost exclusively as my source for baseball info, so I can't really think of any more guys. I love Josh Wilker, but I doubt that his type of writing is what Will has in mind.

Hasn't Rosenthal already taken over the Gammons role?

Also, who's the next kevin?

Been there, done that, wasn't as big a baby about it as Lewis was.

Are you really working on a book proposal, Craig?

Yes. It's sort of a proto-idea at the moment. It may not go anywhere. It may actually be cool. Coincidentially enough, it kind of sounds like something a poor-man's Michael Lewis would write, so my Soren question was somewhat more than hypothetical.

I am willing to own you into submission.

I'm kind of surprised that didn't link to the eraser thing.

Moneyball meets Die Hard.

Moneyball meets Die Hard.

I'm assuming the movie version of Moneyball, if it really gets made, will be exactly this with a little Showgirls tossed in somehow.
   20. The Josecruz Blues (GGC) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 04:39 PM (#3013316)
Shooty, that's I understand film proposals should be worded. That's why I wrote one that was just "A spaghetti western with muscle cars." I never sent it out because then I'd actually have to write a script.

Naw. Just sell them a treatment and then hire David Mamet to write the script.
   22. The Josecruz Blues (GGC) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 05:08 PM (#3013350)
I can do that? The idea of having Paul Auster write a car chase for me sounds appealing.

Of course! It's Hollywood, man!

If that's you're goal, then you should cover all your bases by titling your proposal: "Equation to Ill."

Is it just me or is the above article Will Carroll actually complimenting the writing of others in the context of reminding his readers how important and famous he is?

Not quite as cool as when Lawton got busted for steroids and Carroll kept announcing how he knew who it was but he was totally sworn to secrecy and couldn't say. Just to remind us what a connected guy he is.
   26. The Josecruz Blues (GGC) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 05:48 PM (#3013401)
I wish that I had his chutzpah sometimes.
   27. Jessex Posted: November 20, 2008 at 05:53 PM (#3013405)
Just hold him to his promise to retire after the season, if BPro even makes it that long. He's neither important nor famous. Nate Silver is important and famous.
   28. The Josecruz Blues (GGC) Posted: November 20, 2008 at 08:10 PM (#3013519)
What's this about retirement?
   29. Jessex Posted: November 20, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#3013582)
Carroll said at his Tampa event that he didn't intend to write about baseball after his BPro contract was up. I was stunned he had a contract since that means Nate Silver or Gary Huckabee made a stupid decision. Jay Jaffee told me in an email that he didn't have a contract. Anyhoo, Carroll said he was going to just write about football. Kara was a happy girl that day. He had his little whore with him too.
   30. Dag Nabbit Posted: November 20, 2008 at 10:40 PM (#3013589)

Only one "e" in Jaffe, just like in Daley.

I guess you've never seen Jay field....:")

Silver's got his book deals, MLB Trade Rumors recently said that Joe Sheehan could be on his way out... if BP loses Silver, Carroll and Sheehan in one offseason, then what precisely is left?
   33. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: November 20, 2008 at 11:51 PM (#3013616)
MLB Trade Rumors recently said that Joe Sheehan could be on his way out.

Seriously, really? Could you provide a link? I read MLB Trade Rumors a lot but I don't recall seeing that.

There's no "e"'s in Daly.

Jessex,

I'm not sure who exactly you were referring to, but that last line of your post is thoroughly out of line.
   36. Colin Wyers Posted: November 21, 2008 at 12:47 AM (#3013636)
Looks like it disappeared. I can find it via Google, but when I click on the link, nothing.

EDIT: That link doesn't work for some reason. I've found somebody who apparently has nothing better to do than to copy MLBTR to a message board that has the quote I remember. The entry on MLBTR has changed.
   37. Daunte Vicknabb- 2004 NFL MVP Posted: November 21, 2008 at 03:57 AM (#3013674)
I know who Jessex was referring to, and I am inclined to not care for the individual but would never describe a lady in such terms. But I am curious if I met you, Jessex, I sat on the 1b line and was wearing a super cool Biscuits shirt!

Baseball Prospectus is a totally different read today than 4 or 5 years ago, and while I like some of the newer guys like Goldstein quite a bit I'm not sure if I'll keep resubscribing after this year runs out, I feel like I get more/better news when I just come here, and ZIPS is getting more and more interesting to read all the time!
   38. Jessex Posted: November 21, 2008 at 05:02 PM (#3014030)
I wouldn't describe a lady in those terms either, but Carroll pays her to hang out with him, so I guess "escort" is a more correct term than "whore."

And since there were very few girls there besides her and me you might remember me. I had a Rays jersey on.
