Keith Law's latest mock draft (Free ESPN Insider article):

Rays expected to grab Beckham No. 1

Thoughts on Lawrie? Hype or substance?

I didn't get to watch the draft last year, but will this time around. I'll watch on MLB.com, not ESPN2, but somehow I still expect to be underwhelmed by the whole affair aside from seeing who goes where. But I guess that's the whole point.

The MLB.com feed isn't a simulcast of ESPN2 is it?

And I think Furtado should change the intro to "Oh, you didn't know? Your ass better calllllll somebody!"

"Thoughts on Lawrie? Hype or substance?"

Half and half.

"Oh, you didn't know? Your ass better calllllll somebody!"

Jason Kendall used to use the "clean" version of that as his intro music in Pittsburgh.

I'm always wary of fast risers. I'm skeptical about Lawrie as well as Buster Posey. Jason Castro and Brett Wallace seem to be rising quite a bit too.

If the Rays had won last night, would today have been the first time that a team picking first overall would have also been a division leader at the time of the draft?

I'm skeptical about ... Buster Posey

I'm sorry, but I think everyone should want this guy on their team for his name alone.

come to think of it, this could be an all-time great draft for names: Shooter Hunt? Tanner Scheppers? Christian Friedrich? Quoth the Banya, "that's gold, Jerry, gold!"

The O's were in first place for the 1989 Draft when they took Ben McDonald.

Honestly, if I wanted a catcher, I'd probably just punt for a couple of rounds and grab Petey Paramore in the third, or something like that.

Nope, the Twins took Joe Mauer with the standings like this.

Does MLB take an NFL approach to the televising of the draft? I love that -- 10,000 morbidly obese guys with tent-sized Jets jerseys and bad mustaches, packed tightly inside Radio City Music Hall.
   14. Nate  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:24 AM (#2806779)
I don't understand the Posey skepticism at all. He's having the best season a college catcher has had since....I don't even know. He blows recent top picks like Wieters and Clement out of the water (BA, HR, BB/K, ISO SLG). I know it's college stats and they need to be taken with a big grain of salt, but there's alot of room to fall there. Even the scouts agree he'll hit for a high average and draw alot of walks, making him one of the game's best 3-5 catchers. If he hits 25 homers instead of 15 he'll be the best player at his position.

I think Lawrie is much more substance than hype, and he belongs in the 11-15 range.

Neither did Batista.

I think because its a one year surge in power - a la Brady Anderson. Now its different because he's a college kid, and college kids go through growth spurts or learn how to drive the ball more. But that does raise a few red flags.

Hey, is Jim Callis going to drink some coffee or something before appearing on ESPN this year?

We'll know it's like the NFL draft if Berman is hosting and right before a pick is announced, but after some tech guy has seen the card and told Berman who it is in his ear, Berman says "I have a feeling this is gonna be Posey," and then after it's announced, the other guys on the panel fellate him for being so swami-rific.
   18. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad)  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:38 AM (#2806800)
"I don't understand the Posey skepticism at all."

He doesn't have a great arm, and he doesn't have a lot of experience behind the plate, so some of his defense is projection rather than ability (which is kind of scary for a #1 overall pick). He may not have wood bat power, as you note.

Thus, there's a lot more downside risk with him than with some of the other top guys. I think he belongs in the first, but not as high as he is.

YMMV, of course.

You forgot to include that said Jets fans go batshit crazy for the selection of a player they couldn't pick out of a lineup.

Wallace is at least rising for a good reason: People are realizing that his body type hasn't limited him as much as they think it would. Lawrie's the one I'm skeptical of. He had a great week recently, but in scouting videos he seems to be struggling with pitch recognition more than a top prospect should.
   21. Kyle S at work  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:56 AM (#2806827)
Posey also didn't hit the ball very hard either time he played in the Cape Cod league. I'd be very nervous about taking him. Put it this way - there's a reason that if he doesn't go first, he's sliding all the way to 6th.

Pirates will probably take Alvarez, Royals will likely take Hosmer, O's seem to like Matusz.
   24. Jimmy P  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 11:11 AM (#2806851)
Castro at #8? Wow, didn't see that coming.

KLaw said that'd be a major overdraft, and I just don't see that happening. The only reason they'd be doing it is for "family" purposes, and God-son isn't close enough to waste a 1st round pick on.

I don't understand the Posey skepticism at all. He's having the best season a college catcher has had since....I don't even know.

Because he's still new to catcher, the power is pretty new, and lots of Florida St. players put up insane numbers and then not hit for power in the majors. That ballpark is a launching pad.

I'm always wary of fast risers. I'm skeptical about Lawrie as well as Buster Posey. Jason Castro and Brett Wallace seem to be rising quite a bit

Really? Wallace was in the top 10 about two weeks ago, and now he's falling into the late teens. 2-3 weeks ago, the White Sox were all over him, and now it seems like he'll fall to Toronto.

Didn't some GM draft their granddaughter once in the late rounds? I still remember the Reds drafting Notre Dame QB Carlyle Holliday, who I believe didn't even play baseball, and playing the ND fight song as they announced their pick.

That was the White Sox. This sort of stuff happens in the late rounds, a lot of teams even pass late round picks, but drafting for family with your first top 10 pick in 18 years? I don't see that happening.

In the great Youtube video of Jets draft disasters, there is one scene that is a credit to Jets fans. En masse they are chanting "We want Sapp! We want Sapp!" Of course, it follows that "The New York Jets select Kyle Brady, tight end..."

The other great scene is Mel Kiper saying, "Well, we all thought they were going to take Marino here, but obviously the Jets know something that we don't."

OK, since I can't watch a damn thing on TV without any money on it, I made a couple of bets

High school players taken: I took Under 13

College/JC players taken: Over 17

This is first 30 picks only. Am I a stone cold lock winner?

Did you need both? Aren't these two MECE? Unless you suspect the Yankees will draft Big Brown, just to have a real stud (Joba ain't it, it seems) in the pen
   33. Shibal  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 11:44 AM (#2806909)

Any second round guys Primates like? Isaac Galloway seems to be a polished toolsy high school kid. Allen Dykstra isn't much with the glove, but seems to have great plate discipline and good power. Adrian Nieto seems to be a solid high school catcher.
   37. Justin T  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 11:50 AM (#2806919)
I guess that's 2 pushes, not 2 losses.
   38. Shibal  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 11:52 AM (#2806924)
No, they were two different offerings. They had small limits and they made me wait until they moved the line before I could bet it again, so I bet each one. Unless I'm missing someone, if one loses the other will lose as well.

My completely uninformed predictions:

1. TB - SS Tim Beckham
2. PIT - 3B Pedro Alvarez
3. KC - 1B Eric Hosmer
4. BAL - P Brian Matusz
5. SF - C Buster Posey
6. FLA - C Kyle Skipworth
7. CIN - SS Gordon Beckham
8. CHW - P Aaron Crow
9. WAS - 1B Justin Smoak
10.HOU - P Christian Friedrich
11.TEX - P Aaron Hicks
12.OAK - 1B Brett Wallace
13.STL - P Tim Melville
14.MIN - IF Brett Lawrie
15.LAD - 1B Yonder Alonso
16.MIL - P Josh Fields
17.TOR - IF Anthony Hewitt
18.NYM - C Jason Castro
19.CHC - P Ethan Martin
20.SEA - OF Zack Collier
21.DET - P Ryan Perry
22.NYM - P Shooter Hunt
23.SDP - P Gerrit Cole
24.PHI - P Dan Schlereth
25.COL - P Jake Odrozzi
26.ARI - 2B Jemile Weeks
27.MIN - 3B Conor Gillespie
28.NYY - P Brett Devall
29.CLE - 1B Ike Davis
30.BOS - SS Reese Havens

#41: My amateur opinion: Crow has a red flag in his delivery and even though it's something I think a team could correct, he pitched for a month or more like he was already hurt. He's come back strong, but I think you take Crow knowing there's a chance he goes in for TJ surgery before he ever has a chance to make the majors. Hard to justify that as a top 10 selection.

The money thing is probably a factor with Crow, too. If you have two guys fairly even on your board, why not take the guy who isn't on the record as wanting a gigantic bonus?

I'd be stunned if Toronto took Hewitt in the 1st round.

Since we're talking about deliveries and such, what the hell is up with Scheppers's legs? Does he fill his shoes with cement before he pitches?
   48. PreservedFish  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 12:31 PM (#2807032)
I really don't get why Jason Castro is projected to go so high. Not that I've ever seen the guy play, but his scouting reports really make him sound like a 3rd or 4th round guy. He has only recently shown scouts that he can be an average defensive catcher, and that is still with projection. His bat doesn't seem particularly compelling: nice average this year but a .277 career hitter in college.
   49. Shibal  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 12:31 PM (#2807033)

Because of the low limits...I couldn't put it all on just one bet.

I bet the Under 13 at -115 ($115 to win $100) odds. After I bet it for the max, the line moved to -150.

Since I wanted to bet it again, I could either bet the Under 13 at -150 ($150 to win $100), or the Over 17 college/JC at -115 odds. I chose the -115.

I'm watching the MLB.com draft preview. Interesting quote about Anthony Hewitt: "You are hearing Bo Jackson body comps, which some organizations don't even allow."

I would like to see the meeting where a junior scout is reprimanded for comparing a prospect's body to Bo Jackson's.

Interesting there are no HOFers that were #1 overall picks, although Griffey, A-Rod and Chipper will someday change that fact. Mike Moore has the most wins from a #1 overall pick with 161. After Griffey, A-Rod and Chipper, Harold Baines leads #1 picks in homers with 384.

Bo Jackson was the best athlete most scouts have ever seen (apparently an 80 on the 20-80 scale for at least four of the "five tools"). Comparing Hewitt to him implies that Hewitt is by far the most athletic player in any of the drafts in the past fifteen years, which is a pretty far-reaching statement.

Anyone knows where Destin Hood (high school player from Alabama) or Melvin Ray (high school player from Florida) might go? Both are Alabama football commits...just wondering if they go high enough to warrant going the baseball route (we lost Desmond Jennings to baseball, but kept Justin Woodall).

I don't get why some organizations don't allow this? It's a weird sentence. They don't allow a rating that high? They don't allow bodies like Bo Jackson's? They don't allow hyperbole? I know Bo. It's the statement that puzzles me.

In the 20 seconds of video that I've seen, Hewitt does look very impressive. He has those wide Juan Gonzalez shoulders but looks agile enough to play shortstop. That is quite a combination.

I think he's saying that some organizations don't allow body comps at all, not that they don't allow body comps to Bo.

I read it the other way.

As in, no prospect will ever match Bo Jackson's athleticism, so don't go there.

Anywhere we can look up historical scout reports for the drafted players? I'd love see Pujols'.

It's so dramatic when Bud says the Rays are on the clock! What charisma!

Best part is, they're not even on the clock yet! Now, did they have him pre-record it, or did they just use last year's sound bite?

And how good was Posey before this year?

There was an article about the scout that signed him a few years ago. He works at a grocery store now. He liked Pujols, but questioned his ability to hit for any kind of power.

Who are the fools applauding Selig?

Three or four cheers for Bud. Is that how many people are there or how many people like Bud?

He's putting me to sleep.

Has it started yet?

Can someone post picks as they happen for us TV-challenged folks?
   93. Dr Love  Posted: June 05, 2008 at 01:12 PM (#2807139)
Has a team ever had the number one pick and made the playoffs in the same season?

Hasn't happened yet.

The Rays just went on the clock, then in the interest of speed, ESPN went to commercial.
