Is ESPN making them take the whole five minutes?
   102. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2807154)
The thing to remember about Moustakas: he's in hitting hell (the Midwest League)

He had a bad April, he's picked it up since then.
   103. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2807155)
I think the Rays stole Atlanta's pick
   104. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2807157)
I think the highlights will make it worth it. I like the broadcast. It's also an example of MLB catering to their most hardcore fans, which is something they are accused of never doing.

The "players drafted after Steve Phillips" list was amusing.
   105. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2807158)
Is Selig reading off a prompter?
   106. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2807159)
He had a bad April, he's picked it up since then.

And the entire Midwest league is a pitcher's league
   107. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2807160)
This is so annoying. There's no reason for the Rays to take 5 minutes to make the first pick. It's not like they got a last minute trade offer for it. I blame MLB for dragging it out, because the Rays already said who they are going to take and Selig is the one making the announcements.
   108. Tony H. Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2807163)
BA's write-up of the first pick is hilarious.

Bud Selig makes it official with his best John McCain impersonation, looking at the wrong teleprompter to read that Tim Beckham is the No. 1 overall pick. Again, we don’t think there will be much drama until after the fourth overall pick.
   109. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2807165)
So, Rays take Beckham. I'm late on that one but I will gladly list the picks
   110. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2807166)
Bend it like Beckham...
   111. cardsfanboy Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:21 PM (#2807167)
I don't blame MLB, I blame ESPN for making them take the time, it gives their talking heads time to comment on the pick and explain it to those "ignoramus" fans what is going on, who it is etc.
   112. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:21 PM (#2807168)
i can't beleive that ESPN has the first overall pick hooked up live, via two cans and a string
   113. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:21 PM (#2807169)
Bud Selig makes it official with his best John McCain impersonation,

I was going to make a crack about the similarities between the small crowd and applause for Bud as there was for McCain on Tuesday night
   114. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2807171)
HERE COMES A SOFT-TOSSING LEFTY!
   115. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2807172)
He works too.
   116. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2807173)
KC IS ON THE CLOCK

c'mon Posey!
   117. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2807175)
Selig is reading off a teleprompter, how funny
   118. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2807176)
Selig is just awful. It's hilarious.
   119. Al Kaline Trio Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2807177)
VOTE FOR PEDRO!
   120. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2807179)
C'mon Pittsburgh, do something stupid so the Royals can take Pedro. You haven't let me down in the past.
   121. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2807181)
Hooray, actual prospect!
   122. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2807182)
Alvarez to the Alleghenys
   123. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2807183)
"C'mon Pittsburgh, do something stupid so the Royals can take Pedro."

I hope you die in a fire. We already have enough misery, don't wish us more of it.
   124. danielj Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2807184)
I think Bud Selig and John McCain share the same communications team.
   125. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2807185)
So, are the Pirates going to make Alvarez a pitcher?
   126. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:24 PM (#2807187)
Pirates take Alvarez. My feed is behind everyone else's, so I'm not going to list the picks afterall.
   127. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2807190)
Jim Callis seems to have slept a bit more last night than he did the night before the draft last year.
   128. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2807191)
So we've got a commercial during two of the first three picks. Thank you ESPN.
   129. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2807192)
Jim Callis is nebbish
   130. Vegas Watch Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2807193)
Hey, is Jim Callis going to drink some coffee or something before appearing on ESPN this year?

No.
   131. Moe Greene Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2807194)
So, are the Pirates going to make Alvarez a pitcher?

Maybe they should've tried that with Chad Hermansen.
   132. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2807196)
Will Keith Law appear on camera? they mentioned him but didn't cut to him
   133. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:27 PM (#2807199)
So we've got a commercial during two of the first three picks. Thank you ESPN.

Never watched the NFL draft, have you?
   134. Will Young Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:27 PM (#2807200)
It's a crime that ESPN does not have Keith Law at the table.

I'm sure it's because they have him at a game somewhere to make sure he gets his BBWAA membership.
   135. Vegas Watch Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:27 PM (#2807201)
He was on to talk about Beckham.
   136. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:27 PM (#2807202)
Will Keith Law appear on camera? they mentioned him but didn't cut to him

They had him on camera earlier, you must have missed him.

Never watched the NFL draft, have you?

Yeah, but expect the NFL draft to take 3 weeks.
   137. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2807203)
Maybe they should've tried that with Chad Hermansen.

Well, last time the Pirates took a power hitting college slugger, they made him a pitcher. Seems to be there m.o.
   138. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2807204)
"The Kansas City...Royals select"
   139. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2807205)
The Kansas City... Royals select.. a high school first baseman?

Damn you Dayton!
   140. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2807207)
Keith's 3-3 on his mock.
   141. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2807208)
They showed Law.
   142. Tony H. Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2807209)
My god, Selig is killing me with the teleprompter. That is hilarious.
   143. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2807210)
Hosmer to the Heartland.
   144. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:29 PM (#2807212)
Eric Hosmer's wild house party includes a lot of people unsure of where Kansas City is
   145. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:29 PM (#2807213)
Nice to hear from Eric Hosmer's mother via walkie talkie.
   146. DKDC Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:29 PM (#2807214)
I like Matusz, but I'm really pulling for the O's to take Smoak here.
   147. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:30 PM (#2807217)
Is it just me or does it seem like Bud has never heard of ANY of these players?

Honestly, I know a lot of Primates are really hardcore about this and know quite enough already, but I'm really enjoying the ESPN broadcast. I haven't seen any scouting videos yet, and I only know very basic scouting reports of the guys generally projected to go top 20. I can only imagine that this is fantastically informative for a casual fan.
   151. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:31 PM (#2807225)
ESPN is turning this into a third grade production.

Selig is reading off a teleprompter
Steve Phillips won't shut up.
and apparently none of the first few picks own a cell phone worth more than 20.00 ..
   152. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2807226)
Is it just me or does it seem like Bud has never heard of ANY of these players?

I'm waiting for his crowning Bob Clarke-I-can't-pronounce-the-name moment.

According to every blog on the planet, televised sports should be produced for the upper 0.1% of the fandom.
   155. Lunkus Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2807229)
It ain't just the players, Bud acts like he hasn't heard of the cities or the teams.
   156. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2807231)

he is having trouble reading .. .. Kansas City Royals
   157. Shibal Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2807232)
I echo your opinion Jonathan. It is good stuff.
   158. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:33 PM (#2807234)
I like the time in between picks...as long as Phillips isn't talking.
   159. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:33 PM (#2807233)
So are the Cardinals gonna be the ones drafting a soft-tossing lefty?
   160. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:33 PM (#2807237)
he is having trouble reading .. .. Kansas City Royals

Look at the man! He has trouble doing his hair, reading and talking at the same time is really tough.
   161. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:33 PM (#2807238)
"Kansas City will be picking next"

*cut to Baltimore pick*

Honestly, I know a lot of Primates are really hardcore about this and know quite enough already, but I'm really enjoying the ESPN broadcast.

I don't know #### about any of these guys and I find this awful (from a production standpoint, from an analysis standpoint it's solid). But it's damn fun.

Bud Selig informing the world that the University of San Diego is in San Diego, California. Thanks Bud.

Yeah, I've never heard anyone pronounce "Alvarez" like that.
   165. Tony H. Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:34 PM (#2807243)
San Die... the University of San Diego in... San Di... San Diego California
   166. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:34 PM (#2807244)
I hope Brian Sabean is here to provide the comic relief.
   167. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2807245)
Is it rally pronounced "Mattis"? I always assumed "Ma-TOOZ".
   168. Dingbat Charlie Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2807246)
oh well. I would've preferred Smoak. Hopefully I'll feel dumb for saying that in a few years. and changeup pitchers are fun.
   169. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2807247)
I hope Brian Sabean is here to provide the comic relief.

I can totally see them pulling what the Minnesota Vikings did in the NFL draft a few years ago and failing to draft in their slot.

Or I can see him drafting Julio Franco. Oh Brian Sabean, you are comedy gold!
   170. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2807248)
There goes your soft tossing lefty to the Orioles.
Littlefield must be shattered that the Pirates didn't draft him.
   171. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2807249)

Only if he lost his ak.
   172. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:36 PM (#2807251)
"And with the fourth overall pick, the San Francisco Giants select Craig Kelly, a left-handed pitcher from the University of Arkansas."
   173. Brian Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:36 PM (#2807252)
Mattis is the correct pronunciation.
   174. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:36 PM (#2807253)
Do you think the teams were instructed to take all 4+ minutes for every pick? Or perhaps they give the pick to MLB and Selig just waits for ESPN's cue to announce it. It just seems very scripted.
   175. DKDC Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:36 PM (#2807254)
Matusz is for the Birds.

Oh well.

The O's can hopefully build a pretty decent rotation out of Matusz, Tillman, Arrieta, Liz, Olson, Loewen, Spoone, Hernandez, et al, but their lineup is going to stink.
   176. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2807255)
Not exactly on topic for the moment, but: Law has us taking Jemile Weeks at 12. Gross.
   177. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2807256)
I hope Brian Sabean is here to provide the comic relief.

Come on, be realistic.

"With the... fou... fourth overall pick, the San, San Francisco Gi..ants select Greg Kelly. Craig Kelly, a pitcher, left handed pitcher, from Arkansas, the University of Arkansas."

JT Snow!
   182. danielj Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2807261)
The time betweenn is especially annoying considering that they can't trade picks.
   183. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:38 PM (#2807263)
Do you think the teams were instructed to take all 4+ minutes for every pick? Or perhaps they give the pick to MLB and Selig just waits for ESPN's cue to announce it. It just seems very scripted.

No doubt that Selig is going off of what ESPN is telling him. There's no reason these picks should be going down to the wire this early.

Buster by the Bay.

It's not good TV if there are 5 picks in 2 minutes. They need time to discuss things, and I want to hear about these guys.
   190. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2807270)
Did anyone else think Brian Sabean really had done something batshit crazy, picking some random dude named Geraldine? Or Gerald, or whatever Bud said.

edit: at first, I should say. When he said Posey I figured it out. But I had no idea what his actual first name was.
   191. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2807271)

With Bengie at catcher, they'll most definitely have to move Posey somewhere else on the diamond...

No, but 5 picks in 10 minutes isn't too much to ask for. So far it's been 5 picks in 30 minutes.

it is clearly scripted ... everybody starts talking about catchers before a catcher is picked, every team taking the entire five minutes... no doubt the thing is scripted
   200. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:41 PM (#2807285)
They may have switched from Teleprompter to the written page. Selig wasn't staring out as if he thought he might recognize someone across the room.
