"I'm extremely excited..."

Coulda fooled me.
   202. andrewberg Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:42 PM (#2807288)
I just saw the pick on the MLB.com draft tracker that said "Gerald Posey." My response was "WTF is Gerald... ohhhhh."
   203. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:43 PM (#2807290)
Not exactly on topic for the moment, but: Law has us taking Jemile Weeks at 12. Gross.

Agreed. Seems very stupid to draft for need, which is what that would have to be, right? No way Weeks is one of the 12 best players in the draft, and the A's are desperate for MI prospects.
   204. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2807291)
Mattis is the correct pronunciation.

I don't like it.
   205. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2807293)
Does Callis have a toupe?
   206. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2807294)
it is clearly scripted ... everybody starts talking about catchers before a catcher is picked, every team taking the entire five minutes... no doubt the thing is scripted

Just like the World Series!
   207. JJ1986 Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2807295)
Now Ravech is doing that ####### Chris Berman thing and "predicting" the pick right before it happens.
   208. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:45 PM (#2807296)
yeah, they definately switched Selig to a written page, he was bobbing like he was a bobblehead

and a high school catcher.. OH NOOOOOOOEESSS
   209. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:45 PM (#2807298)
Skippy to the Fish.
   210. danielj Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:45 PM (#2807299)
Kevin Goldstein doesn't think Weeks would be an overdraft at #12, FWIW.
   211. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2807302)
Thats one pick everyone nailed. Skipworth to Florida. Catchers going back to back in the early first round.
   212. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2807303)
See, it's apparently a positive if they haven't been at a position long! And I've never pitched! Logically, I should be a top-20 talent!
   213. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2807304)
Is Law wearing his Bar Mitzvah suit?
   214. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2807305)
Hey Keith Law's haircut looks sharp
   215. Kyle S at work Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2807307)
definitely should be "muh-TOOZ".
   216. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2807308)
Skipworth seems like a reach to me. Smoak or Alonso is a better choice.
   217. Boileryard Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:47 PM (#2807309)
The draft was more interesting when it was just a conference call with relatively short intervals between picks. Five minutes between picks makes this thing really, really boring.
   218. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:48 PM (#2807313)
There's a potential advertising gold mine here with Staples or Office Max. With all the time between picks, think of all the chairs and other office equipment that is being destroyed in draft rooms.
   219. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:48 PM (#2807317)
Keith Law's hair is demolishing the other draft experts. Mayo and Goldstein are plum bald, and Callis's looks like it is glued to his head with a vaseline/dandruff compound.
   220. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:49 PM (#2807320)
"Now Ravech is doing that ####### Chris Berman thing"

Busting out the unfunny nicknames? Displacing people who actually undertand baseball? Cheating on his wife with barflies?
   221. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:49 PM (#2807321)
WTF?
   222. JJ1986 Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:50 PM (#2807322)
The Reds are the one team who didn't really need a 1Bmen in the draft. I would have taken G. Beckham or Ethan Martin (as a pitcher).
   223. Guts Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:50 PM (#2807324)
KLaw's mock is finally wrong - took 7 picks.
   224. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:50 PM (#2807325)
ASU's incoming draft class is getting pillaged so far...
   225. Swedish Chef Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2807326)
This draft badly needs a superweird pick.
   226. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2807327)
Reds take Alonso
   227. Best Regards, Larry Mahnken (Dewey is a slacker) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2807328)
Dammit, show Fabian!
   228. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2807330)
Looks like the Reds are not re-signing Adam Dunn

EDIT : To be fair to them, you take the best player available regardless of position. And the Reds have drafted pretty well of late ( Stubbs excluded )
   229. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2807331)
Hmmm...can Alonso play RF? That's a LaPorta kind of selection.

Oh, God, Steve Phillips just said the same thing...I take it back.
   230. JJ1986 Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2807332)
This draft badly needs a superweird pick.

The Astros are rumored to be looking at some odd choices at #10.
   231. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:52 PM (#2807334)
A non-college reliever to the Mets?
   232. andrewberg Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:52 PM (#2807336)
Who is in ASU's class? Skipworth and Beckham?
   233. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:53 PM (#2807337)
The Astros are rumored to be looking at some odd choices at #10.

Me?
   234. Kyle S at work Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:53 PM (#2807340)
Beckham signed with USC.
   235. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:53 PM (#2807342)
Oh, God, Steve Phillips just said the same thing...I take it back.
Except, of course, Steve Phillips acted like the Brewers no longer have a positional logjam having moved LaPorta to the outfield. I don't think Steve Phillips actually follows baseball.
   236. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:54 PM (#2807346)
Me?

Stop paying so attention to those dadgummit spreadsheets and chew some tobacco and show some grit. Then we will select you.
   237. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2807349)
Hosmer and Skipworth...I think a few more (Lawrie comes to mind)
   238. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2807350)
Beckham has a big head.
   239. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2807351)
Damn. Was hoping for a miracle and Beckham would fall to 12.
   240. JJ1986 Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:56 PM (#2807354)
If I'm Washington it takes me about 10 seconds to pick Smoak.
   241. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:56 PM (#2807356)
Sox take Gordon Beckham
   242. Brian Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:56 PM (#2807357)
I'm at work and can't get draft info anywhere but here, keep the updates coming. Thanks.

G.Beckham not going to the Reds is a bit of a surprise.
   243. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:56 PM (#2807358)
A's might take Hicks is what I hear.
   244. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2807361)
Ah, my mistaken Beckham. I'll be rooting for this guy so I don't feel like such a fool.
   245. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2807364)
If I'm Washington it takes me about 10 seconds to pick Smoak.

And then feed him to Young and Johnson in a giant tortilla.
   246. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2807365)
Alonso born in Cuba ... taken by Reds ... VIVA LA REVOLUTION!
   247. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2807369)
Good lord; here comes another slop-throwing lefty for the Cardinals.
   248. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2807371)
And the Astros pick

OSVALDO OLIVA, BAHAMAS UNIVERSITY, SS, B/L, 5'2"/250, 1991-06-02

COMMENT: GIANT LIKE HIPPO. FAT BODY. VERY BROAD SHOULDERS & STOMACH, ESPECIALLY FOR SHORT HEIGHT. BUILT LIKE FORMER MAJOR LEAGUER CECIL FIELDER. BATTING STANCE IS SORTA AWKWARD. MORE STRONG THAN GOOD HIT NOW. PWR IF HE LOSES WEIGHT. LEVEL CUT WHEN KEEPS BACK SHOULDER LEVEL. ARM SIMILAR TO JOHNNY DAMON, AVG INACCURATE. SLOWER THAN THE US MAIL, TIMID BASE RUNNER. DON'T SEE PLAYERS LIKE THIS VERY OFTEN. BIGGEST STOMACH I'VE SEEN 15 YRS SCOUTING, AND THIS INCLUDES PREGNANT PLAYERS GIRLFRIENDS.
   249. We don't have dahlians at the Palace of Wisdom Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2807372)
Beckham signed with USC.

Did they ever announce what his signing bonus was?
   250. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:58 PM (#2807373)
Damn. Was hoping for a miracle and Beckham would fall to 12.

Me too. Damn.

A's might take Hicks is what I hear.

I think Law said only if he'd agree to pitch, which apparently he won't.
   251. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:58 PM (#2807375)
I wouldn't mind Hicks.
   252. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:59 PM (#2807377)
A's might take Hicks is what I hear.

This is Goldstein's prediction.
   253. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:59 PM (#2807378)
If I'm Jim Callis, I move my toupee around each pick and see how long it takes people to notice.
   254. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 05:59 PM (#2807379)
#248 made me laugh out loud
   255. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:00 PM (#2807385)
248 wins.

"The University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri"

As opposed to the other Universities of Missouri
   257. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:01 PM (#2807387)
The look Selig gave as he entered the screen was priceless. He was like "who the #### is this guy?"
   258. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:01 PM (#2807389)
Could Smoak possibly fall to us? That just can't be possible.

The Rangers will #### us if no one else does.
   261. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:01 PM (#2807392)
IMO, Smoak = Berkman...wonder if Houston takes him.
   262. cardsfanboy Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:01 PM (#2807393)
AND THIS INCLUDES PREGNANT PLAYERS GIRLFRIENDS.

not sure I know what this means, I think he was going for players pregnant girlfriends, but it's just as funny if not moreso, the way it's written.
   263. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:01 PM (#2807394)
Is Osvaldo Oliva a lefthanded shortstop? He is also very young to be attending Bahamas U, must be intelligent
   264. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:02 PM (#2807397)
Could Smoak possibly fall to us? That just can't be possible.

We can only pray.

Beckham signed with USC.

They pay better than the Rays.

The Astros draft Travis "Babymaker" Henry

   271. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:05 PM (#2807419)
Ha! BA's draft blog: "frankly, Crow might be the best pitcher in the Nationals organization right now."

Yeah, it's noon.
   274. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2807422)
So Castro isn't meant to go to the Reds
   275. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2807423)
Oh man. Cmon Rangers, let us have Smoak.
   276. We don't have dahlians at the Palace of Wisdom Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2807425)
When did Castro ditch the dreadlocks?
   277. Guts Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2807426)
Castro to the 'Stros.
   278. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2807427)
Bud reminds us that we're still in the 1st round, which is actually helpful because it's been an hour and that was the 10th pick.
   279. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2807428)
Ok, after seeing his pic, Jason is now

Jason "The 40 Year Old Virgin" Castro
   280. Kyle S at work Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2807429)
Castro over Smoak - wow. Somewhere, Mike E is smiling.
   281. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2807430)
is it me, or is Smoak's stock falling ... whats up
   282. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2807431)
Jason Castro to the 'Stros. That's kind of crazy-weird.

Come on Rangers, you know that Christian Friedrich is looking tasty. Smoak? Please, the ten teams that already passed on him can't be wrong.
   283. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2807432)
Damn, Smoak is going to drop all the way down to Oakland!

Texas has to take Friedrich right?
   284. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2807434)
Note that I don't know anything about college baseball or these prospects, but this looks like the first awful pick
   285. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2807435)
Bud reminds us that we're still in the 1st round, which is actually helpful because it's been an hour and that was the 10th pick.

don't forget that stanford university is in stanford california.
   286. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2807436)
Jason Castro to the 'Stros. That's kind of crazy-weird.

Not if you've followed the Astros drafting the past few years
   287. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2807438)
Callis also has one eyebrow higher than the other. Is he Stan Sitwell?
   288. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2807440)

Its not falling, its going up in smoke!
   289. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2807441)
Mel Kiper just predicted an O-Lineman to the A's...
   290. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:09 PM (#2807442)
Callis also has one eyebrow higher than the other. Is he Stan Sitwell?

He's also apparently wearing his just-woke-up hair.

Which means they're drafting a CB.

If Texas picks Smoak, all I'm going to be thinking about all day is if we had lost one more game to the Rangers last year we'd be picking right now.

The Reds going with Alonso might be the first surprise, if not a horrible, pick.
   294. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:10 PM (#2807448)
Holy ####. Castro at 10.

Ed Wade is a geyser of hilarity.
   295. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 06:11 PM (#2807450)
If Texas picks Smoak, all I'm going to be thinking about all day is if we had lost one more game to the Rangers last year we'd be picking right now.

Yeah, the White Sox won 11 or their last 17 to move them out of the top 4 to 8.
