Holy crap, there is an ungodly amount of sandwich picks this year.
   502. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:07 PM (#2807787)
C'Mon, Freidrich!

But I keep thinking of Semi-Tough:

"Freidrich...is an a$$hole!"
   503. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:07 PM (#2807788)
So does Ryan Perry remain a starter?
   504. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:07 PM (#2807789)
"If a last place team needs anything, it's a relief pitcher!"

As long as your objective is to get the GM fired, then in my experience it works OK.
   505. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:08 PM (#2807790)
He's got great name Chi. The Christian Gentleman, they'll call him.
   506. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:09 PM (#2807791)
The Mets could try to pick the UCM reliever who pitched 9 1/3 innings in relief in the D2 Playoffs. Even if he's a Junior
   507. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:09 PM (#2807793)
Perry's shoulder is not going to last long with those mechanics.
   508. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:09 PM (#2807794)
These are some awful picks.
   509. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:10 PM (#2807795)
Feeling good about Reese falling to #35, Temple?
   510. Esoteric Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:10 PM (#2807796)
My god, the Mariners actually drafted a relief pitcher. Jesus Christ, Bavasi really wants to get fired.
   511. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2807797)
Havens to Mets?!
   512. Dan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2807798)
Feeling good about Reese falling to #35, Temple?

You're a jinx.
   513. JJ1986 Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2807799)
That's cool. I would have waited to pop Havens at 33, but they know more about where other teams are going. I really like him.
   514. Guts Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2807800)
Havens to Mets.
   515. Ravecc Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2807801)
Reese Havens. Mayo must be picking for the Mets.
   516. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2807802)
Havens, yay or nay?
   517. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2807803)
Reese Havens is definately not a hockey player
   518. There are no words... (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2807804)
WHO??????????????????????

Richie Havens?
Brad Havens?
Safe Haven?

Who is this guy?
   519. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2807805)
Heh, the mets have picked up a Luis Castillo clone as his replacement.
   520. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2807807)
If steve phillips says, this guy is a baseball player one more time, i am going to egg his house [anybody know where phillips lives?] ...

hey steve, they are all baseball players
   521. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2807808)
Havens as 2B? The team's best 2 players are a young SS and 3B.
   522. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:13 PM (#2807809)
Havens is a top 10 talent in the draft. Good pick.
   523. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:13 PM (#2807811)
Gammons said he could play catcher.
   524. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:13 PM (#2807812)
Havens, yay or nay?

You mean, To Havens or Havens not?

Great Havens, I am going crazy !
   525. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2807813)
So, who's out with an arm injury? Good odds that's SD's pick.
   526. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2807815)
Havens is a top 10 talent in the draft. Good pick.

Ok then, yay!
   527. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2807816)
My god, the Mariners actually drafted a relief pitcher. Jesus Christ, Bavasi really wants to get fired.

This just feeds my theory that Bavasi does things just to spite USSM.
   528. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2807817)
Sounds like a nice pick. Keith Law loves him, at least.

I like it when you hear the "this guy's a ballplayer, a baseball rat" stuff.
   529. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2807818)
I hate it when teams draft guys that aren't baseball players.
   530. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2807819)
So, who's out with an arm injury? Good odds that's SD's pick.

i bet it will be a baseball player
   531. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2807820)
I like it when you hear the "this guy's a ballplayer, a baseball rat" stuff.

Much better than when they tried to draft Eli Manning a couple of years ago.
   532. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2807821)
I wish they would have taken Friedrich there.

Two Cape Leaguers though. I know Davis and Havens well -- solid players last summer.
   533. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2807822)
Shooter?
   534. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2807823)
Shooter?

McGavin?
   535. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2807825)
The Padres pick Will Ferrell!
   536. Cabbage Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2807826)
The Reds drafted Tyrone Willingham's QB at Notre Dame a few years back.
   537. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2807827)
Huh?
   538. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2807828)
I think you Mets fans will be happy with Havens. Temple's been raving about him in ST, and I agree based on what I've seen. We were hoping he'd fall to Boston, but I guess it's less agonizing to have your guy get poached 13 picks ahead of you instead of the pick right before you.
   539. Guts Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2807830)
Dykstra?
   540. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2807831)
I'm sure Dykstra will eventually hit 8 HR in Petco.
   541. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2807832)
Dykstra's balance looks weird in his swing...
   542. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2807833)
Dykstra to Padres. Another surprise
   543. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:18 PM (#2807834)

Technically, Xavier Avery is also a football player.
   545. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:18 PM (#2807836)
Dear god, another college 1B!!!
The padres pick Dykstra when they had a shot at Friedrich/Hunt/Scheppers?!

Anyone know why the Friedrich's stock is crashing down ?
   546. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:19 PM (#2807838)
Again, a college player at the same position as your best player, who is still young? I just don't get it. It would be one thing to get a HS kid who is maybe 3 or 4 years away...
   547. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2807839)
I like Dykstra. Smart kid, great power, great eye, questions about his glove though. SD can just stick him at DH though.
   548. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2807840)
Is Friedrich a Boras guy?
   549. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2807842)
The Mets have their answer to Uggla/Johnson/Utley now.
   550. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2807843)
Maybe SD can trade Dykstra to the Mariners for Fields. Today.
   551. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2807844)
Yes. Yes, it is.

Condolences, Shooty. Big eHug for you...

USSM has crashed from rage.

Dykstra to Padres. Another surprise

yes.
i just hope he is a baseball player.

Dykstra is limited to 1B only, has holes in his swing, and his only contribution is power. .. grr
   554. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:21 PM (#2807847)
Holy ####...Steve Phillips just said that pitch recognition should be the sixth tool. The Apocalypse is coming.

Bud Selig continuing to inform us of picks and educate us on geography.

USSM has crashed from rage.

That's gotta be killing them. Murders will happen in Seattle if those guys aren't allowed to channel their anger right now.
   557. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2807851)
Bo Jackson to Phillies
   558. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2807852)
I'm not a Hewitt fan, but it's a logical pick for the Phillies. They love these projects.
   559. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2807853)
Wow, nobody likes the SP this year, huh?
   560. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2807854)
Hey look, Phillies pass on the college pitchers too. Take Hewitt who has tools almost as good as "he who cannot be compared to".
   561. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2807855)
I hated the fact that the M’s were going after Casey Weathers at #11 last year, but they were saved by the fact that the Rockies took him at #8 and Phillippe Aumont fell into their laps. Let’s hope the same happens this year, but it’s a lot more to ask for four college relievers to all be off the board by #19. Odds are that at least one of them will be available, and the M”s will take the one furthest up their board. And it will be simply be the latest reason to loathe the 2008 season.

In Fontaine I trust, but please, Bob, avoid the college relievers.

Pre-draft entry at USSM. Bill Bavasi is purposely ####### with them. I will bet money on this.
   562. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2807857)
Wow, nobody likes the SP this year, huh?

This draft is supposed to be heavy in college relievers.
   563. Elston Gunn Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2807858)
Bo Jackson to Phillies

That kind of comparison is not allowed.
   564. MexicanGabe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:26 PM (#2807859)
Strange, man... Dykstra? where else can he play? he's 6'5" 240 lbs! he can't play the OF in PETCO and he's sure as hell not playing 1B there either...
I was hoping for Shooter or Friedrich.
   565. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:26 PM (#2807860)
LOL, what the hell was that graphic? Phillies 1st round picks from 1999-present. At the bottom, a note saying Pat Burrell was #1 in '98. Just expand the damn thing to '98 (and then put a note at the bottom saying JD Drew was a 1st rounder in '97).
   566. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2807863)
Phillies 1st round picks from 1999-present. At the bottom, a note saying Pat Burrell was #1 in '98. Just expand the damn thing to '98

Yeah, I thought that was funny too.

That kind of comparison is not allowed.

Ryan Thompson to Phillies
   569. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2807867)
Nice job Ravach. Tell the guy just drafted that it's going to suck pitching in Colorado.
   570. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2807868)
Ofcourse he goes to the Rockies. Look at this first name!

The Rockies go Christian!

"I don't remember anything that happened that day, sorry dude"
   572. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2807871)
Argh, I'm a retard. Boston picks #30 and #45, not #35 and #40. Duh.
   573. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2807875)
Friedrich has to be about ready to slit his wrists. Down 10 slots... AND to Colorado?
   574. Dan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2807876)
I think we have a new candidate for best hair in the draft.
   575. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2807877)
Whoa, nice hair Schlereth.
   576. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2807878)
another college releiver
   577. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2807880)
AZ takes the second-most talented child of Mark Schlereth.
   578. CFBF Hates Hyphens Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:34 PM (#2807881)
Seems to be quite the run on Arizona and Arizona State players.
   579. Greg Franklin Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:34 PM (#2807882)
Anthony Hewitt's MLB.com scout comment:

"As the spring wore on, few players had more helium than Hewitt, a toolsy high school shortstop."

And you thought chemistry was unimportant....
   580. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:35 PM (#2807886)
who has fallen so far?
   581. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:36 PM (#2807888)
so is anybody excited with whom they got, past the 10th player chosen?
   582. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2807889)
I cant get over the Padres reaching for Dykstra .. what the hell do they plan on doing with him?
   583. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2807890)
so is anybody excited with whom they got, past the 10th player chosen?

Justin Smoak and Brett Lawrie seem nice.

AZ takes the second-most talented child of Mark Schlereth.

Speaking from first hand experience?

Well, Dan will know where to get his HGH if he gets injured.
   585. MexicanGabe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2807893)
My sentiment exactly, maybe they got'em so everyone would shut up about not having a power bat?...
   586. JJ1986 Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:39 PM (#2807894)
I don't even know who Carlos Gutierrez is. Seems like a reach.
   587. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:39 PM (#2807895)
Twins take a guy who's already had TJ surgery?
   588. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:39 PM (#2807898)
Smoak's a good call; he will hit 35 HR a year in Texas, and Blalock will get traded, opening up a position for him in 2 years. I will call it now; Smoak will be the 1st player in this class to homer in an MLB game.
   589. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2807900)
That's a ####### horrible pick.
   590. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:42 PM (#2807903)
"I don't even know who Carlos Gutierrez is."

Miami's closer.
   591. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2807907)
Orange Lutherans!
   592. Will Young Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2807908)
I wanted the Twins to snag Shooter Hunt just for his name alone and instead they draft a college reliever who has atrocious mechanics and has already been injured. Another banner day in the Bill Smith Regime.
   593. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2807910)
I'll take the player who hits the last homer in an MLB game from this class than the first.
   594. Rafael Bellylard: Built like a Molina Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2807911)
Shooter Hunt to the Red Sox?
   595. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2807912)
Miami's closer to where? It certainly is closer to Minnesota, than say, Seattle, but what does that have to do with anything?
   596. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2807913)
Depodesta has a post up about Dykstra

As I wrote the other day, this isn't a need-based pick. Allan is a San Diego native from Rancho Bernardo HS who has been an All-American at Wake Forest. He's 6'5", almost 250 lbs and has monster power. Most importantly, he has skills to go along with that raw power.

Allan has had an unbelievably consistent collegiate career, as he's hit at least 15 homers while also drawing at least 50 walks in each of his three seasons - something nobody else in this draft has done. Allan also produced in the Cape Cod League batting over .300 with walks and power, so he has also proven his skills with a wood bat. In short, his track record is impeccable.

Given his size, power, and patience, comparisions have been drawn to Jim Thome.

great, so the padres got a DH.
   597. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2807914)
Yankees take the tough sign. That makes sense.
   598. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2807915)
Whats with this new fetish of drafting college relievers early? I heartily disapprove of this trend.

Finally a HS arm. If you discount Ethan Martin.
   599. JC in DC Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2807916)
Run, Yankee fans, run: Cole is a projectable high school right-hander who compares a bit to Kyle Farnsworth.
   600. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2807918)
So Cole is tall and mean?
