"I'll take the player who hits the last homer in an MLB game from this class than the first."

That could very well be Smoak, too.
   602. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2807920)

great, so the padres got a DH.

He was named DH of the year in the Cape Cod League. I'm not kidding.
   603. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2807922)
What's a "future" plus slider and change up?
   604. MexicanGabe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2807923)
So, the Pads got a DH... great!
Now, if they can only move to the AL.
   605. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:48 PM (#2807924)
or Cole wears tight pants, drinks a lot and has absolutely no idea how to pitch.

He was named DH of the year in the Cape Cod League. I'm not kidding.

He played the field. Not spectacular from what I saw.
   607. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2807928)
And a round of padlocks for the Indians!

Even if they wanted a 3B, you have to like Darnell a little better there.
   608. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2807930)
This guy has the talent of a star, and the larceny-skills of an all-star

Let the Ruben Rivera comparisons begin!
   610. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2807933)
Shooter going to the Red Sox? He's got the goofy name and everything...
   611. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2807934)
"or Cole wears tight pants, drinks a lot and has absolutely no idea how to pitch"

It sounds as if they just drafted Mick Jagger.
   612. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2807935)
Heh, Chisenhall has a lots of tools, starting with a lockpick.
   613. Swedish Chef Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:51 PM (#2807936)
Burglary and grand larceny... sounds like a sure bet.
   614. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:51 PM (#2807938)
Lonnie Chisenhall? Is that a real name?
   615. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2807940)
I guess the Indians figured if the draft was going to be conducted NFL style, they had to draft some NFL style players.
   616. Rafael Bellylard: Built like a Molina Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2807942)
Lonnie Chisenhall? Is that a real name?

Guess we'll have to check his rap sheet for AKA's...
   617. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:54 PM (#2807945)
Chisenhall has plenty of upside–he ranked as the No. 1 freshman in the nation heading into 2007–but was kicked off South Carolina’s team for stealing money from the coaches’ locker
   618. Swedish Chef Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:54 PM (#2807946)
Is that a real name?

It's the name he uses in the porno business.
   619. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:54 PM (#2807947)
Pat Kelly's son. Jesus #### am I old.
   620. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:54 PM (#2807948)
Tim Melville is another faller. He was in the top five in some mock drafts I saw a few weeks ago.
   621. Kirby Kyle Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2807951)
The next time the Indians need to recover a corked bat, they'll have just the guy.
   622. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2807952)
I guess a baseball player having Lonnie as his first name can have unfortunate side effects.
   623. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2807954)
Tough sign for Boston...hope they can get it done.
   624. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2807957)
Perfect. Either the Red Sox or UTenn loses a player; that couldn't work out any better.
   625. SABRJoe Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:57 PM (#2807960)
Christ, what is it with the SEC and bad hair?
   626. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2807963)
Casey? Why would you name your kid that?
what next..Nervous Nellie? Hopped up Shooter?
   627. Will Young Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2807964)
C'mon Twins, take the Shooter.
   628. Dr Love Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2807966)
Christ, what is it with the SEC and bad hair?

I find the Christ part of this especially funny given this guy's repeated references to praying and thanking god.
   629. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2807967)
southern women love the wild hair; that's why the donald has done so well with women from Georgia.
   630. Mattbert Posted: June 05, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2807969)
I am not digging the Casey Kelly pick.
   631. PreservedFish Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2807972)
"You're right Josh, the blue shirt certainly does look good."

I love the Casey Kelly pick.

It's the humidity.
   634. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2807981)
I don't understand the Gutierrez pick either.

Shadow draft/Pittsburgh: I took Hosmer, the Pirates took Alvarez.

   635. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2807982)
What's going on, are they taking a half hour break before the supplemental round? Do they need to do a "Who's Now?" segment or have Stephen A. Smith yell about this or something?
   636. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2807984)
Allan Dykstra is a Scott Boras guy too?

this is horrible.
   637. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2807986)
The Mets are picking again, at 33? How many extra picks do they give you for blowing your division?
   638. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2807987)

And now teams are rewarded for letting go mediocre middle relievers.
   640. Brandon in MO (Yunitility Infielder) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2807991)
Nice hair, Schlereth
   641. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2808000)
The Red Sox considered Shooter Hunt, but decided against it when they determined he was a puppy.
   642. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2808005)
So are they done with the draft for the day?
   643. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2808008)
Shibal won his bets. There were over 17 college players taken, and under 13 high schoolers. Nice job.
   644. Not The Real Fausto Carmona (Dan Lee) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2808009)
So, what, the Indians have totally scrapped the whole emphasis on character guys? Any way Shapiro can try to get Milton Bradley back for Franklin Gutierrez and a minor-league reliever?

I can't freaking believe this pick. Nobody had Chisenhall in the first round.
   645. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2808011)
This guy has talked for about 15 seconds and he's already a billion times better than Selig.
   646. Guts Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2808012)
Twinks get a Shooter in the arm.
   647. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2808013)
Shootah!
   648. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2808015)
Hunt's mechanics look very CBW-friendly.
   649. JJ1986 Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2808016)
I wanted Hunt for the Mets. I hope they take Odorizzi now.
   650. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2808017)
First round comments:

Alonso to the Reds at #7 makes absolutely no sense to me. There were better players on the board, starting with the guy who went after him.

Castro's a bit of an overdraft at #10, but I think he's going to be good.

Weeks at #12 comes out of the blue; I don't know that anyone had him that high, or with that particular team.

I like what the Twins and Dodgers did at 14 and 15, with Hicks and Martin (I'll bet Logan White was *really* unhappy when Hicks went).

Ike Davis to the Mets wasn't a real surprise; Reese Havens four picks later was.

Cole's a very high upside pitcher who was ranked in the top 10 most of the early part of the draft season, but dropped down after some inconsistent efforts and because he is expected to be a difficult sign. He's certainly going to the right place for a guy who wants a lot of money.

####, Brewers take Odorizzi.

Holy #### does Shooter get after it. This is the first time I've seen video of him, but I bet CBW would be raving about him.

Castro's a bit of an overdraft at #10, but I think he's going to be good.

He may be mid-first talent, but don't you have to take Smoak if you're the Stros?

Brewers having another nice draft. Odorizzi is a tough sign?

Phillies back up Hewitt with Collier. They are going all toolsy on us.

Wait a sec - this "tools" dude, Collier, makes it to 1st in 4.2. Brett Wallace made it in 4.8 - why is he degraded for athletic concerns?
   666. AJM Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2808039)
What do I need to know about Holt? MLB.com doesn't have a report on him.
   667. flournoy Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2808040)
Only four more picks until the Braves finally get on the board... geez this is boring.
   668. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2808041)
If the Royals picks works out perfectly for them and he turns out great, at best he is a New York Yankee by his 5th year in MLB.

Have you seen him?

ASU's coaches have assured people that he's way more athletic than he looks.

Is it possible that high school toolsy players are now undervalued? Given all the focus on corner IF sluggers/college pitchers, Pat Gillick must be ecstatic to get Hewitt AND Collier!

Montgomery looks like he has a really quick arm. A little lazy in his lower half, but the arm action looks great.

Fat righty goes at #39
   685. Mark S. Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2808062)
From comments in MetsBlog:

Holt emerged this spring as the ace of a surging Seahawks baseball team. His fastball has improved since arriving in Wilmington and now sits between 92-94 mph, touching 96. Not only does he have a big arm, but he is able to maintain his velocity deep into games. However, the major difference between this year’s Holt from the past is his vastly improved command. Holt at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, has a perfect pro body with a clean delivery and a first-round arm. He is coordinated and athletic on the mound, attacking hitters with his fastball. The only thing holding him back is the lack of a usable secondary pitch. He offers a slider with loose spin and tends to slow his body and arm down when throwing it. Even though his secondary stuff is in need of refinement, teams will not walk away from the pro body, strong arm and life on the fastball.

Strong body. Good fastball and no secondary pitch. Sounds like Pelfrey.
   686. bfan Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2808063)
Walton HS has a very good pitching prospect; the Braves grab him?

I don't know why you people are bagging on the Selig and his replacement for announcing the city that the schools are in.

I've always thought that people don't do stuff like that enough nowadays. Any band that doesn't start their concerts by saying something of the form "We're Ted's Head from Bunmfuck, Idaho" should be shot.
   692. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2808071)
But ofcourse, another soft tossing projectable LHP.
Just that the Braves have about 50 of them lying in the system.

I was sure the Cardinals were taking DeVall. I forgot that rounds 1a-5 are the designated reach-for-a-sinkerballer rounds.

DeVall is a good pick, IMO.

Nothing against De Vall, but the braves have only projectable, pitchability lefthanders at Rome, some in Myrtle Beach and Danville soon. A little variety would be nice !!
