Depodesta has the Padre picks up just as they are announcing them ..nice

Our scouts believe Decker may be as pure a high school hitter as there is in the country. More later.

Isn't Melville committed to college?
   703. rlc Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2808089)
The Red Sox have drafted the D'Back's pitching coach. Is that even legal?
   704. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2808090)
Ahh Boston pops a Rice arm.

And to follow up on DeVall, given the Braves don't have a first rounder, you would think they could reach for Melville..

I take that back, Depodesta is posting them before they are announced

UNC. Like Harvey a year ago, he'll likely be coming here.

And the Sox clone Daniel Bard at #45.

Lots of stuff I like still out there in the 2nd. Galloway, Hood, Sample, Seaton...

Re: 4.2 vs 4.8 - six tenths of a second is a LOOONG time for that distance. Someone who gets to first in 4.2 seconds averages 21.4 feet per second (and is going faster than that at the end, probably 20-30% faster). Say 25 feet per second. Multiply that by .6 seconds - it's 15 feet down the line's worth of difference.
   712. Mark S. Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2808100)
From BA Blog:

Credit to BA’s Matt Blood who pegged the Mets taking Brad Holt, the hard-throwing righthander from UNC Wilmington, with the 33rd pick.

Apparently, Holt's selection wasn't a surprise to everyone.
   713. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2808101)
Will Carroll is saying that Buster Posey wants 8 figures, or he's heading back to FSU.

Buster, you're full of ####.

"Seriously, I though Melville was top-5. WTH happened?"

Bonus. He said he wants top-15 money, or he's going to college.
   716. A One-Shoed Craig K Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2808108)
Please, whichever penny-pinching idiots are running the Cardinal draft; pick Melville and throw 6 million at him. Please.
   717. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2808110)
BA says the Twins see Gutierrez as a starter.
   718. wcw Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2808111)
Posey's got leverage. So do the Giants, with pick #5A in 2009. I expect the team to sign him to a bonus that is way high in a world where Lincecum got $2M, but a lot lower than the $12M Posey's agents have leaked that he expects.

Me, I think he's just pissed he didn't drop to a richer, better team. The only reason you float crazy bonus demands is to do so, and he failed. He'll get over it.
   719. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2808112)
Wouldn't it be funny if the Cards took Carpenter?
   720. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2808114)
Second round has been good to the Braves the last 2 years. lets see who they get. They got Yunel and Freddie Freeman the last 2 years at 75.
And that stupid Josh Fields at 70 and he refused to sign.
   721. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2808115)
Shadow draft pick #2, Pittsburgh: Isaac Galloway, OF, Los Osos HS, Rancho Cucamonga CA. If the Rays take Galloway, then I take Destin Hood, OF, St. Paul's Episcopal Academy, Mobile, AL.

Royals - please take Tyler Ladendorf or Isaac Galloway please.
   723. Cowboy Popup Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2808118)
Anyone have any opinion on Bleich?
   724. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2808119)
Posey's got leverage. So do the Giants, with pick #5A in 2009.

He's got leverage, but nowhere near as much as they do. They don't need him next year, and getting two top 11 picks next year wouldn't hurt the Giants. Meanwhile, there's no way in hell Posey matches the season he put up this year
   725. flournoy Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2808121)
I'm glad Josh Fields didn't sign, I don't want any UGA guys on the team anyway. I'd rather have the compensation pick in this year's draft.
   726. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2808122)
Phillies have done a good job so far, with Hewitt and Collier.

"Shadow draft pick #2, Pittsburgh: Isaac Galloway, OF, Los Osos HS, Rancho Cucamonga CA. If the Rays take Galloway, then I take Destin Hood, OF, St. Paul's Episcopal Academy, Mobile, AL."

Mike and I agree. This pleases me.

I'm going to have to do my shadow tomorrow or Saturday, since I didn't bring all my rankings to work.
   728. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2808124)
"Anyone have any opinion on Bleich?"

Blech!

Sorry, couldn't resist the straight line. BA had him ranked 54th in the state of California, says he might go top 5 rounds with a solid postseason. 88-91 FB, solid curve, good change.

On the surface, looks like a bit of a reach, but I guess you never know until they sign and suit up.
   729. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2808125)
Heh, Clint Sammons is going to be up once Bobby loses patience with Corky.
   730. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2808126)
from DePodesta ..
Decker is a LHP/OF from Sunrise Mountain HS in Peoria, AZ. Though he throws 90 mph with a good curveball as a pitcher, we see Decker as a hitter and he's a pure hitter.

A left-handed hitter, Decker has fantastic discipline, big power, and a beautiful swing. More than anything though, Decker has a natural rhythm and timing to hit that is innate to all great hitters. He hit 14 homers this spring in just 72 at-bats while also maintaining his patience as the opposition pitched around him. Jaff plays CF in high school, though we expect that he'll be more of a corner outfielder in the long-term.

Though high school bats are always more risky, we think that Jaff has big bat potential and was worth the selection at 42. At present, he is committed to Arizona State. We were thrilled to get him.

dont' be jealous just cus your front office doesn't have a blog :)

Phillies have done a good job so far, with Hewitt and Collier.

I thought so too, with my limited knowledge.
Brewers and Phillies look to be having nice drafts to me.
   732. flournoy Posted: June 05, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2808133)
Sammons will hit even worse than Corky, so he won't last long. It'll be okay.

Will Carroll is saying that Buster Posey wants 8 figures, or he's heading back to FSU.

Buster, you're full of ####.

Until Buster Posey announces that Pete Rose will be reinstated to MLB tomorrow, I think he's the one with more credibility in that tandem.

Until Buster Posey announces that Pete Rose will be reinstated to MLB tomorrow, I think he's the one with more credibility in that tandem.

Probably. But, if Buster really believes he's going back to school, he should go back to elementary school because he's an idiot.

Or Florida St, same thing.
   739. Will Young Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2808145)
Anyone have any opinion on Bleich?

My wife apparently knows his family from back in New Orleans. He caused a little stir amongst his HS teammates back in the day and I think Michael Lewis wrote a NYTimes or Wall Street Journal article about that. Might want to search the tubes for it.

Edit: Here's the article.

Is mlb.tv going to cover the 2nd round?

I believe so.

3 more picks for MIL in the next 16. So far, so good.
   744. Rodder Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2808156)
Phillies have done a good job so far, with Hewitt and Collier.

I agree, but I wouldn't mind them continuing to draft exclusively pitchers in the first round. Because of their hitters' ballpark and team policy to not sign pitchers to contracts longer than 3 years, I think drafting pitchers becomes a priority.

Correction, he's not a friend of my wife's family. Instead, my father-in-law is his allergist. Sorry for the confusion and back to your regularly scheduled thread...

"Instead, my father-in-law is his allergist."

To what is he allergic?

To what is he allergic?

The strike zone.

And what the hell happened to 6:15? I'm on pins and needles here.

Back on!
   754. NTNgod Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2808186)
MLB.com's draft tracker is ahead of the announcements, eh?
   755. NTNgod Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2808188)
Pirates take Scheppers. He already comes injured, so he doesn't have to waste time getting injured in the Pirates' minor leagues!
   756. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2808191)
You know, Scheppers has clear top 10 upside. I'd much rather have drafted him than, say, Giavotella.
   757. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2808192)
I guess Scheppers has a lot of upside, but I don't like his form. His legs are so slow and dead.
   758. NTNgod Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2808193)
Brewers coming up with two picks in a row...

They pop Lenny's kid, to go with their other second-gen guys.

Goddamnit!
   760. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2808198)
The Brewers steal Cutter Dykstra away from UCLA! Why are they opposed to education!?!?!
   761. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2808200)
I want the Angels to get Jordan Danks or Tim Murphy. They will instead get some Florida prep kid I've never heard of, who will probably be better than either of them.
   762. flournoy Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2808203)
Does anyone know anything about Robert Stovall?
   763. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2808205)
I love the Tyson Ross pick.
   764. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2808209)
"Does anyone know anything about Robert Stovall?"

Smart guy, big curve and change, very successful in high school.

I wasn't crazy about his mechanics, but the video I saw was for ####, so that's not written in stone.
   765. Mark S. Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2808211)
Does anyone know anything about Robert Stovall?

From MLB.com

Tyler Stovall, LHP/OF
Stovall broke a 29-year-old state record for most wins in a season after going 18-1 this spring for Hokes Bluff High School in Hokes Bluff, AL. Also registered a state-record 227 strikeouts in the campaign while compiling an 0.45 ERA in 104 innings pitched. Completed 18 of 21 starts. Went 12-2 with an 0.89 ERA and fanned 157 in 2006. At the plate, he hit .529 this spring with 13 home runs and 63 RBI. Batted .489 in 2006 and .490 in 2005. Named MVP of state tournament. Has signed two home run baseballs for the Little League Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Also a class valedictorian.
   766. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:46 PM (#2808213)
As he's been drafted by the Braves, five years from now he'll either win 20 games or have been traded to some other team and have amounted to nothing.
   767. Ignatius J. Reilly Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2808217)
More high school pitching!
   768. Every Inge Counts Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2808219)
I was hoping the Tigers would draft a hitter like Destin Hood, but I guess they can always go the route of drafting pitchers and signing hitters.
   769. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2808228)
Tyler Chatwood, huh?

This is obviously the greatest pick in draft history and the Angels will go on to win many more championships!
   770. Jimmy P Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2808232)
Woo-hoo, a Boilermaker chosen!
   771. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2808240)
Heh, Braves have drafted a high school pitcher from FL, AL and GA. All "projectable" pitchers, with the 2 lefties having "pitchability".

I don't think the Braves have changed their scouting staff for 10 years now!!

I wonder whether we're cousins.

Scott Green? Was that a reach for the Tigers?

"Odorizzi right now."

Agreed, Odorizzi is badass.

"Paramore to Oakland? Strange pick."

I like it. He's a great defender, and he'll probably hit well enough to start. Even if Oakland doesn't need him (and with Suzuki/Powell, they probably don't), catching prospects always have good trade value.
   781. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2808301)
"Scott Green? Was that a reach for the Tigers?"

BA had him going right around there, so not really.

You're really floored by this. Small victories for Pads fans this year.

Someone do a study on whether players announced on a blog before the deputy commish gets around to it go on to more successful careers.

"Ha, Dayton is really amibitious this year, isn't he?"

I love his first three picks, and Melville would be quite a coup if they can bag him.

I really wanted the Brewers to take Scott Gorgen.
   792. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:48 PM (#2808365)
Braeden Schlehuber. Nice name. Spelling final round nominee.
   793. Sparkles Peterson Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2808368)
I can't wait to see someone break down Gorgen's mechanics. That followthrough might be the worst I've ever seen in a pitcher. That should be a pretty easy thing to correct, but how much wear has it already put on the arm?
   794. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2808372)
Paramore to Oakland? Strange pick.

Heh, I thought that was a pretty predictable pick.

Tigers draft another SEC pitcher...
   796. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2808378)
Heh, I thought that was a pretty predictable pick.

I thought Toronto or Boston would pick him up given their lack of catching depth. With Powell and Suzuki, it is a bit strange for Oak to pick a college C this high.
   797. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 05, 2008 at 10:59 PM (#2808392)
You can never have too many catchers.

Maybe Powell's knee is worse than we're hearing. Or maybe he's been rehabbing it by driving to the store to buy Twinkies. Who knows?
   798. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: June 05, 2008 at 11:04 PM (#2808407)
Logan Schafer, popped by the Brewers in the third. Any relation to Jordan?
