THE PHILLIES’ SHANE VICTORINO TAKES OVER Y-ROCK TONIGHT AT 8!

And at the far end of the booth...a lonely Jerry Blavat loads his heator.

Last night Y-Rock On XPN was out broadcasting live from the Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park, and tonight we have even more Phillies action as right fielder Shane Victorino takes on a different position...as a Y-Rock DJ! Find out what The Flyin’ Hawaiian listens to as he takes over the station tonight from 8-9pm at 88.5 XPN, 88.5 HD-2 or online at YRockOnXPN.org.

...Back in March, I spoke to the Bob Marley-loving Victorino briefly about music, and I think it’s safe to say listeners will get to hear their fair share of reggae Thursday night when he’s calling the shots. Ya’ mon.

When XPN approached the Phils and said they were in search of a music-loving player, it didn’t take long for all signs to point to Victorino.

He was clearly excited and really into music, so the people at XPN are really excited to give him airtime.

I plan to make a name for myself by liveblogging Victorino's radio stint.

He says the nickname "Flyin' Hawaiian" has "kinda worn out" by now.

He says there are two other Hawaii kids in the big leagues, Jerome Williams and someone on the Braves (turns out to be Tyler Yates). I thought there were more Hawaiians than that.

Football is the big sport in Hawaii because of all the big Samoans and Tongans. He grew up a Braves fan.

He says his situation isn't like Lou Gehrig and Wally Pipp because he initially replaced the injured Rowand but then the guy whose job he took was Bobby Abreu.

Favorite artist - Bob Marley "His words, what he says in his music, it's so amazing...so creative, to put everything together...etc."

First we get his at-bat music, "Buffalo Soldier". A fine choice.

BB-ref says there's 3 other players nowadays who were born in Hawaii

Shane Komine and Chad Santos were there through high school.
Scott Feldman, although he went to high school in San Mateo, CA

Also Dane Sardinha, Brandon Villafuerte and Justin Wayne if you go back to 2004.

Jim McGuinn is back talking with Victorino. He can sense that where we're going is a lot of reggae and ska-based music. Victorino agrees.

Recent concerts he's been to in Philly - Coldplay, Steven Marley down on South Street a few weeks ago.

Q: What's your favorite thing about the city?
A: Everything...blah blah...lots more to do in the city than people think. Doesn't mention anything specific.

He loves the Coldplay guy's voice. "it's hard for me to fathom the imagination of what he does...his voice, and the keyboards, just amazing."

Toots and the Maytals were in town last year. The Phillies' PR guy invited Victorino to show up. He was so excited, then he showed up at the Electric Factory at 10:00 PM and the show was already over.

The next song "American Idiot" is dedicated to the PR guy.

He was surprised that the Steven Marley concert also contained Damian Marley. That would be a good surprise, yes.

He met them after the concert and was amused to hear the Jamaican accent in person. They had been partaking in something and weren't able to talk about baseball.

Ah, Jack Johnson is his Hawaiian homeboy, despite being from Oahu rather than Victorino's Maui.

Some teammates met Johnson 3-4 years ago and said he was a great guy and was walking around barefoot in the streets of Philly.

Some of his friends in a band back home said they'd give Victorino some of their songs to play today, but they forgot because they're so laid back and stuff.

Party on.

Victorino still gets jerseys signed for his grandkids and whatnot. Last year he got a jersey signed "To Shane, God bless, Barry Bonds." He likes Bonds.

They talk for a while about only one in a hundred minor-league players ever make the big leagues, and how in these minor-league games against roger Clemens only one guy in that game will ever make the big leagues, but they can all say they batted against Roger clemens.

Proving yet again...that the only baseball player that was ever cool about music (outside of the time I trailed Rick Reichardt and Jim Spencer into a Detroit "hi-fi" shop) was a drunklordly Jim Fregosi plopping in some loose jukebox coinage and coming out with "96 Tears"!!

It's been kind of an up-and-down, or should I say down-and-up, season, etc., do you think you have a shot at the playoffs?
