The Possibly-Temporary Postseason Day Two Game Chatter

Since the Game Chatter does NOT have today’s games up yet, I figured I’d submit a catch-all discussion thread which, if I’m lucky, someone will sticky until Game Chatter shows up.

I like Maddon's call for Balfour here. Yes, a walk costs a run, but one run is ok at this point, and Balfour's the best bet to get outs and not give up the big inning.
   102. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2965016)
Kind of a gift call saying Cabrera went around, but impressive 2 outs by Balfour regardless.
   103. cardsfanboy Posted: October 02, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2965017)
Busch(old hot turf version),

as a kid I loved it, just because I was going to a game, and I took pride in the fact that nearly every ballplayer on the opposing team hated playing there. When the new owners took over, the amount of work they did to fix the stadium (grass, prettied it up etc) made me realize how bad it was, it was almost a different park. (I still dislike Dodger stadium more than Busch, it was/is so boring, and the one road in and out was very weird) but almost every other park I've been too I think is/was better than old hot Busch.

What was Ozzie coming on the field for?
   105. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2965019)
Balfour just yelled at Cabrera, again, coming off the mound. Somebody might be just a little too hyped.
   106. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2965022)
Boy, did Balfour just smoke Uribe and Cabrera.

And then he tells Cabrera where to sit.
   107. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2965020)
Why did Orlando Cabrera suddenly become a complete idiot and ######### this year?

He's always been that way, why do you think the Angels traded his ass?
   108. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2965023)
Really? I was unaware of him being a hothead or any sort of problem before this season.

Balfour looks more excited that usual, which is saying something for a guy that regularly stomps around the mound swearing to himself between pitches.
   109. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2965024)
So will Maddon use Balfour for the 8th as well, or go to JP Howell or something?
   110. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2965025)
That was huge.

Civic Stadium in Portland is actually a really nice urban ballpark, now that they've fixed it up. The difficulty is that it's got like 25 000 seats and no more than 5 or 6 thousand ever show up for a given game. But it's got a great feel, interesting dimensions that aren't forced, some cool things to see beyond the outfield, and a lot of history to it. They've been playing baseball there for 50-odd years. If it's not raining, it's a great place to catch a ballgame.
   111. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2965026)
How was any of that The OC's fault? He was just kicking the dirt, and suddenly Balfour starts barkin' at him.
   112. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2965027)
The Oakland Coliseum is a perfectly fine place to watch a baseball game and is easily accessible by public transit as well.

If you say so. I've been there a couple dozen times, and it's been unpleasant in one way or another every time, including but not exclusively the fact that even when the stadium is sold out it feels empty. I maintain that it's a butthole. They do play baseball there, though, which is good enough for me.
   113. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2965031)
I just got home - did anyone say if Longoria is the first person ever to homer in his first two postseason ABs?
   114. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2965032)
Yeah, Gary Gaetti did it in 1987.
   115. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2965033)
The White Sox don't do the little things well.
   116. Bob T Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2965034)
Gary Gaetti did the same back in 1987.
   117. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2965035)
That was pretty awesomely spastic by Konerko.
   118. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2965038)
The Oakland Coliseum used to be better before Mr Burns blacked out the sun.
   119. Van Lingle Mungo Jerry Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2965040)
Gary "Nice" Gaetti. Get it?
   120. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2965041)
Anderson PHing instead of Swisher?

The White Sox deserve to lose.
   121. Moses Taylor demands to be housewarmed Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2965042)
Why did Orlando Cabrera suddenly become a complete idiot and ######### this year?

I don't know a single White Sox fan that likes him.
   122. Moses Taylor demands to be housewarmed Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2965044)
I can't believe Ozzie let Uribe hit for himself last inning. That was inexcusibly stupid.
   123. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2965045)
That doesn't make sense, Harold. The job of a pitcher is to get outs, period. Getting outs is appropriate for any situation, and will also result in a low ERA.
   124. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2965047)
I knew a couple of people who were prone to saying things like, "Guillen only likes other beanerz!!!" and "Ozzie will never win cuz he wont play his wite doodz!" Guillen commenced to spend the entire season feuding with Cabrera. I wonder if he's just anti-Colombian.

In other news, I need to find different people who like baseball.
   125. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2965050)
But didn't Ozzie already win?
   126. sotapop Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2965058)
ok, I've only got GameCast... so I'm hoping the Rays fans went batshit crazy for Baldelli.
   127. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2965060)
Does anybody have any feelings on TheraFlu v. DayQuil (or a generic thereof)?
   128. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2965063)
But didn't Ozzie already win?

These are not the sorts of people for whom such facts are relevant.
   129. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2965064)
Does anybody have any feelings on TheraFlu v. DayQuil (or a generic thereof)?

I am a fan of the dayquil/nyquil rotation.

"This is America. Passion was invented here."

I can't believe Ozzie let Uribe hit for himself last inning. That was inexcusibly stupid.

Who's he gonna bring in? Swisher is railroad tied to the bench.
   132. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2965072)
If I'm Upton, I'm taking at least one strike if not 2.
   133. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:33 PM (#2965074)
Okay Upton, I said take 1 or 2 strikes, not 3.
   134. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2965076)
Swisher is railroad tied to the bench.

Nick Swisher is a chump.

That's not true.

But I can see why Ozzie thinks it's true.

Who is it that Frank TV keeps impersonating that involves wearing a pink tie and talking about how rich he is?
   135. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2965077)
How was any of that The OC's fault? He was just kicking the dirt, and suddenly Balfour starts barkin' at him.

I heard this all play out on the radio heading home, and now TBS showed some of what went on, including OC "just kicking the dirt."

I don't know wtf Cabrera was doing there, but it was definitely something directed at Balfour.
   136. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2965082)
Voxter - I think it's the worst Trump impression I've ever seen. Took me most of yesterday to decide on that.
   137. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2965083)
ok, I've only got GameCast... so I'm hoping the Rays fans went batshit crazy for Baldelli.

No idea, the broadcast came back right as the pitcher was throwing his first pitch. Plus it took Orsillo until Baldelli was running down the baseline to note that he was pinch-hitting.
   138. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2965085)
Konerko earned that one.....
   139. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2965086)
That was a very long home run.
   140. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2965088)
I guess I can see the Trump thing. The hair and all. I'm not sure I've ever heard the man, talk, though, so I can't gauge its accuracy.
   141. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2965090)
It was a high home run. Not particularly long.
   142. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2965091)
Watching Ken these days is just painful. He could likely be a solid bat for 350 odd at bats a season. But this whole play more than 110 games a season thing, it ain't working. Even as a DH. Too beat up. Needs the time to rest that frame.

Looks good though. He will always look good out there. I think that is what fools managers......
   143. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2965093)
Ya'know Dan, it is permissible to get someone to swing and miss......
   144. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2965094)
See, that wasn't so hard was it??
   145. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2965095)
It was a high home run. Not particularly long.

It was very high, it's true, but it was also fifteen rows deep. Not as long as it might have been if hit on a line, but impressive nonetheless.
   146. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 08:49 PM (#2965096)
Wheeler didn't have great stuff, but got it done.

But in sort of the same vein, I think "I've been carrying you so long I've got scoliosis" should be the "Her father's the district attorney!" of this postseason.
   155. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2965117)
My only disappointment is that they weren't able to wear on the Chicago bullpen despite Vazquez exiting early, but hey, it's a win.
   156. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2965118)
Brett Myers had a fantastic finish to the season, minus the last two starts.

Hmmmm
   157. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2965119)
Try not to laugh, but did anyone catch who did the national anthem? I heard a choir but don't know anything else.
   158. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2965123)
That's quite the reactive lineup from Sveum. Weeks and Hall getting the axe. Brewers must not have a competent backup in CF or cameron would be benched too. Ohh and theres a RHP today too.
   159. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2965125)
i wonder if the brewers approach is to take pitches today.
   160. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2965126)
I don't know if he's really throwing 94, but his fastball looks pretty good early.
   161. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2965127)
Myers simply abused Cameron in that at-bat.
   162. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2965129)
7 pitches, no swings. nothing really grossly out of the strike zone.
   163. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2965130)
Man, it's like the strike zone got a restraining order out on Myers!
   164. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2965131)
Braun almost gone!
   165. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2965132)
How did that stay in? Cool day I guess.
   166. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2965133)
OK Brewers, now's a good time as any to start an embarrassing 3-game destruction of the Phillies, starting with this wife-beater.
   167. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2965134)
nice fielding by burrell there.
   168. The Polish Sausage Racer Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2965135)
Weeks shouldn't have been in the lineup to begin with. Did Dale learn nothing? I felt like I was watching a Ned Yost tribute band.

Nice swing from Braun.
   169. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2965136)
Walking the bases full in the first? Yikes.
   170. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2965137)
Well, this game ended quickly.
   171. SouthSideRyan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2965139)
Man, it's like the strike zone got a restraining order out on Myers!

First they say he can't hit his wife anymore. Now he can't hit the strike zone. This is some ########.
   172. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2965140)
Harris:

Brewers platoon at second and third.

Do your research before baseless renarks.

BASES-LOADED WALK!

Well done on #163.

EDIT! I'm stupid!

I like this feature in game chatter.
   176. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2965145)
Hart. Sucks.
   177. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2965146)
Corey Hart is embarrassing himself. Can they replace him with someone else? Anyone else?
   178. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2965147)
Well, maybe he'll settle down now.

I'll miss most of this game anyway.
   179. Esoteric Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2965148)
Corey Hart just LOOKS like the walking embodiment of a "hick with a stick."

EDIT: Make that "dumbass hick."
   180. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2965149)
That boy ain't right.
   181. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2965150)
odd inning. he got cameron on three looking, none of which was right down the middle.

four around the plate to durham, all four balls, a couple close, but nothing that I thought was a horrible call.

double to braun.

ibb to fielder, unibb to hardy to force in a run.

then hart swings at the first pitch to hit into inning ending DP.

Weird man. Weird.
   182. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2965151)
Corey Hart is such a stupid ########. An ugly stupid ########, at that.
   183. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2965152)
Actually, I liked 161. It was true, so it was perfectly subtle.

And I didn't even get it until now.
   184. Esoteric Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2965153)
Why do I have this horrible feeling that the Brewers will be looking back on the first inning with real regret later on?
   185. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2965154)
Dale has to understand there isn't TIME to let Corey "work out of it".
   186. Gern Blanston Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2965155)
Now he can't hit the strike zone.

He didn't hit the strike zone--it fell down the stairs.
   187. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2965156)
Harvey...chill dude...see end of comment.
Ohh and theres a RHP today too.
   188. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2965157)
good take there by Hart. geesh
   189. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2965158)
Hart is just brutal right now.
   190. Gern Blanston Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2965159)
Oh, and does Hart EVER take the first pitch?
   191. SouthSideRyan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2965160)
But who do you run out there instead Harv? Kapler?
   192. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2965161)
I mean, sure, I've got some dough on the Brewers to win the WS, so I'm rooting for them. But I'm not a "fan" and I haven't watched that many games. And I cringe every time I see Hart come to the plate. If I were a true Brewer fan, I'd probably hold him in the same esteem that I did Jason Kendall and do Bobby Crosby. Maybe even more.

Holy crap he is a mess.
   193. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2965162)
a little late now, but Uecker's call of Braun's 2b made it sound like it hung up there in the air. did it?
   194. Van Lingle Mungo Jerry Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2965163)

<applause>
   195. Gern Blanston Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2965164)
But who do you run out there instead Harv? Kapler?

Not with a separated shoulder, or whatever he's got. Gwynn Jr. is all the Brewers have for 4th OFs.
   196. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2965167)
rollins swings at a ball in the dirt and grounds out to second. CC must really be hard to pick up.
I know the Phils missed him in the four game sweep (coincidence?) so I haven't really watched him much.
If it weren't for the likelihood that he's about to abuse my phils, I'd probably enjoy it more.
   197. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2965168)
I don't really think the Brewers have another option besides hoping Hart can snap out of it. Who else can they play in RF? Gwynn Jr?
   198. The Polish Sausage Racer Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2965169)
Oh, and does Hart EVER take the first pitch?

Nope.
   199. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2965170)
Bill Hall probably would've got that :)
   200. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2965171)
I love it when the ball hits the bag.
