The Possibly-Temporary Postseason Day Two Game Chatter

Since the Game Chatter does NOT have today’s games up yet, I figured I’d submit a catch-all discussion thread which, if I’m lucky, someone will sticky until Game Chatter shows up.

I guess they could let Russ Branyan or Mike Lamb fall over themselves out there, but Mike Cameron would probably rather kill himself than play with those corners.
   202. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2965173)
So, the story with Victorino is that Davey Lopes is some sort of SB god?
   203. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2965174)
CC volunteered to pitch against Philly but Yost said no. It would have been the Sunday game on 3 days rest.
   204. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2965175)
I was at game 1. The wind from the west, from LF to RF is relentless.
   205. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2965176)
Is Branyan even on the roster?
   206. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2965177)
Victorino has always been speedy. Lopes has helped but Shane still has the worst SB% of the big four (rollins, werth, utley)
   207. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2965178)
That don't look like no cutter.
   208. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2965179)
I can't imagine a RH hitter hitting a HR to LF today. That is what puzzled me about yesterday, it seemed Milwaukee was trying to pull Hamels, rather than take him and his great change out to RF.
   209. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2965180)
Okay, C.C. Now get the platoon DH out.
   210. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2965181)
I assume that Sabathia must be using more than "touch" to get that movement - he's gotta be turning his wrist on release, too. Apparently it's thrown with a fastball grip, though.
   211. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2965182)
didn't think that strike was a bad call til the replay
   212. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2965183)
They couldn't put another outfielder on the roster because they needed *12* ####### pitchers...

Cheeseburger!!
   214. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2965185)
Damn.
   215. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2965186)
I'm in favor of the Mets throwing 180MM at Sabathia...
   216. Esoteric Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2965187)
Sit down, Ryan Howard. You are no MVP candidate.
   217. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2965188)
The Brewers have 12 pitchers on their roster?
   218. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2965190)
I don't see how Gwynn Jr. being the replacement means Hart needs to stay in the lineup. Gwynn is replacement level-ish. Hart is an automatic out, or two, if it's possible at the time.
   219. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2965191)
CC throws a slider. When he came to Milwaukee he told the announcers he happens to call that pitch (actually a slider) a cutter. The TV crew accepted that and calls it a cutter, most of the time. I disagree with this, you should call it what it is, a slider. Yes, the TV guy, Brian Anderson is the Brewers regular broadcaster. After 3 years, I've decided I hate him, bland as it gets, boring.
   220. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2965193)
I'm waiting for Geico to go under in this financial catastrophy so I don't have to watch these commercials any more.
   221. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2965194)
MCoA what sort of horrendous sickness of body and soul could you possibly have that would be causing you to root for the Phillies?
   222. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2965195)
It will take 7 years $230, at least, to land CC.
   223. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2965196)
Another punch-out for Myers.
   224. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2965197)
I'm waiting for Frank Caliendo to go under in this financial catastrophy so I don't have to watch these commercials any more.
   225. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2965199)
Sit down, Ryan Howard. You are no MVP candidate.

Sit down C Hart, you are no All-Star. He has left 5 men on base in his past 2 ABs.
   226. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2965201)
MCoA what sort of horrendous sickness of body and soul could you possibly have that would be causing you to root for the Phillies?
Lived in Philly for five years.

I'm rooting for the Brewers today. I don't care enough about the Phils for me to root against a close series, against Sabathia and for Myers.
   227. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2965202)
Kendall actually hit that to the warning track?

What a ####### bandbox.
   228. Gern Blanston Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2965203)
It will take 7 years $230, at least, to land CC.

~$33MM a year? Really?
   229. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2965206)
Not with a separated shoulder, or whatever he's got. Gwynn Jr. is all the Brewers have for 4th OFs.

Wow, I just checked the Brewers roster. No backup outfielders besides Gwynn, 12 pitchers in a five game series?
   230. Gern Blanston Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2965207)
It's kind of mind-boggling that Hart and Fukudome were both on the NL all star team this year. They could form a nice "went to total shite in the second half" RF platoon right about now.
   231. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2965209)
I have been writing that it will take a $$$ figure that nobody is prepared to accept, to land CC. The stars are aligned for him to shatter the record. He will. There may have to be unique injury provisions to get past $200 and even close to $300. He will change the way long term deals for pitchers are constructed.
   232. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2965210)
I'm in favor of the Mets throwing 180MM at Sabathia...
Whoever throws the most money at Sabathia is going to be happy about it five years from now.
   233. Gamingboy Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2965211)
I'm back. It's looking like this is gonna be the Game Chatter all night, huh?
   234. SouthSideRyan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2965212)
I think that's a new high for Beano. If the Brewers won it all, he's gonna have him at 10/400.
   235. VoodooR Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2965213)
~$33MM a year? Really?

NFW
   236. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2965214)
Brad Nelson is the "5th" OF for Milwaukee.
   237. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2965215)
I'm guessing something like 8/200 for Sabathia at this point.
   238. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2965216)
I think that's a new high for Beano.

I've had 10-$300 before. So total, no, annual, yes.
   239. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2965217)
I think he might crack $200 million, but only if it's for 8 years. I think 8/200M is plausible.
   240. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2965218)
i expect a BB by burrell.
   241. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2965220)
I guess I thought you were lamenting that Howard K, MCoA.

7 years $230M? That sounds a little insane.
   242. Gern Blanston Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2965221)
I have been writing that it will take a $$$ figure that nobody is prepared to accept, to land CC.

Yeah, but jesus. Is there any pitcher who makes *half* that now? Well, Zito, I guess, but barely ($18MM?). Zambrano makes that too, I think.

I mean, I figured CC to get over 20MM per, maybe as much as 25, but your figure seems awfully high.
   243. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2965222)
Off the end of the bat, Pat.
   244. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2965223)
Sabathia doesn't appear to throw strikes very often, but the guys are swinging at his junk so he must be very deceptive.
   245. Gern Blanston Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2965225)
I think 8/200M is plausible.

That's about what I was thinking. It'd still make him the best paid pitcher in history by a comfortable margin (I think?).
   246. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2965226)
And that "cutter" doesn't hurt.
   247. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2965227)
I am, sorta, a Phillies fan, though. What's to dislike about Philly? The city's got heart, and sandwiches, and an unmatched history of baseball futility.

(Yeah, yeah, I know, not the A's. The sentence worked better this way.)
   248. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2965229)
Larry Anderson reads BTF!
   249. Gamingboy Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2965230)
Nice gapper there.
   250. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2965231)
The Brewer staff is CC and "others".

Sveum is convinced that the best he can get from non-CC pitchers against Philly is 3 odd innings.
   251. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2965232)
CC is like Bugs Bunny out there.
   252. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2965233)
c'mon happy pete!
They've been peppering Werth with X-2 high fastballs this series. I guess he knew that one was coming.
   253. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2965234)
What I dislike about the Phillies is their stadium. It has nothing to do with Philadelphia as a city.
   254. Fly, the most judgment-free human being on Earth Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2965235)
Philly has some terrible sandwiches. The Philadelphia cheese steak is far inferior to a good Steak Bomb.
   255. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2965236)
Wow--a run! I figured he'd shut them out.

Wait, is he on 3 days rest again?
   256. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2965237)
Back to back XBH against CC? When's the last time that happened?
   257. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2965238)
Hanging change? to Feliz.
   258. Gamingboy Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2965239)
My God, Sabathia is HUMAN!
   259. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2965240)
Playoff baseball is so screwy, the Phils could beat CC and Milwaukee might still come back to win in 5.
   260. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2965241)
What's to dislike about Philly?

The ####### weather. Ugh. Human beings are not designed to live in that part of the world. At least this one wasn't.
   261. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2965242)
Philly has some terrible sandwiches. The Philadelphia cheese steak is far inferior to a good Steak Bomb.
I don't know what a steak bomb is, but the cheesesteak, done right, is a beautiful thing.

Philadelphia is also the home of Tony Luke's, where I had the best sandwich of my life.
   262. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2965243)
well...you'd hope CC wouldn't throw one in the dirt now, with Myers up and Feliz @ 3rd w/ 2 outs.
So maybe Brett has a shot.

(cue laugh track)
   263. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2965244)
Myers swings... but this time, he misses.

   266. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:47 PM (#2965248)
would you have rathered they waited til game 3 to start him?
   267. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2965249)
If he walks Myers, the place may come apart.
   268. Justin T contains indigenous nudity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2965250)
Dipshite Wegner calls the 0-2 a ball and now CC has to burn through all these pitches to Myers.
   269. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2965251)
I'm glad to see that Milwaukee has latched on to the philosophy of, "Where there be not quality, let there be quantity."
   270. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2965252)
It has nothing to do with Philadelphia as a city.

Something about the city has always irritated me. And some kid from Philly started a fight with me last year when I was traveling in Asia. And then the whole Mets thing. My objectivity has been stretched to the breaking point.

The ####### weather. Ugh. Human beings are not designed to live in that part of the world. At least this one wasn't.

Can I interest you in Utica?

CC is having some kind of existential crisis up there.
   271. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2965253)
Brett Myers walks and has the best AB so far against CC. (9 pitches)
   272. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2965254)
Wow.
   273. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2965255)
Who lost more from that exchange? Meyers or CC?
   274. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:50 PM (#2965257)
The crowd reaction to that AB was classic. Respect the Philly fans.
   275. Gamingboy Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:50 PM (#2965259)
when I was in Philly, it pretty nice. Only things I hit up other then Ballpark were the Touristy sites though: Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Constitution Center, the "Rocky" Statue, etc. Hard to judge a city when you only see that. Game was great though.

I think Myers may have just had the most cheered Pitcher at-bat since Ruth was allowed to hit.
   276. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:50 PM (#2965261)
The 1-0 was perfect.
   277. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2965262)
like i said - hes living outside the K-zone, but the phils were swinging at that mess the first inning.
   278. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2965263)
Ump really squeezing C.C.
   279. Flynn Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2965264)
CC got jobbed on that 1-0 fastball.
   280. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2965265)
WTF? Two strikes in four pitches.
   281. I Munson'ed myself (BBF) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2965266)
Seriously, squeezed zone suddenly?
   282. Gamingboy Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2965267)
I think Bud Selig wants it to rain so he can declare that this game has to be played in Milwaukee right about now.
   283. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2965268)
the 1-0 was borderline, but so were some of Bretts pitches to Durham.
   284. The Polish Sausage Racer Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:52 PM (#2965271)
OMFG this is not good.
   285. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:52 PM (#2965272)
CC gets out of this inning, he will finish the game.
   286. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:52 PM (#2965273)
There was nothing borderling about the 1-0. The entire ball got the entire plate.
   287. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2965274)
ouch

Shanve Victorino will you marry me?
   291. BeanoCook Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2965278)
That's going to drive up CC's post season ERA.
   292. I Munson'ed myself (BBF) Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2965279)
Timefor Braun and Prince to get hittin'.
   293. Gamingboy Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2965280)
Victorino just made Bud Selig very upset.

Get CC out of there. He has game 4 to pitch.
   298. Dan Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2965286)
Wow.

Just wow.
   299. Lassus: Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2965287)
My guess is that CC is gassed. 4th start on 3 days rest?
   300. Harris Posted: October 02, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2965288)
still early fellas. Rather have a 4 run lead in the 9th than in the 2nd.
