The Real McCoy: Volquez yes, Griffey no

Baker know...s nothing about Volquez.

Volquez and manager Dusty Baker discussed the possibility that he might not make the team.

With three mediocre starts before Sunday’s bad start-good finish appearance, Volquez could feel the All-Star game slipping through the fingers that throw that devastating change-up.

...“We have to watch Volquez,” said Baker. “He hasn’t thrown quite as good over his last four starts. This is new territory for him. What’s the most innings he has thrown in the big leagues?”

Volquez pitched 34 big-league innings at Texas last season, but 179 combined innings in the majors and minors.

“Yes, he threw more in the minors, but that’s not as much intensity, not as stressful inning as they are up here.”

Forget about the ASG. Edinson has to be the frontrunner for the Cy Young. Do you guys think he'll hold on to win it?

As for the "Griffey no" portion, I caught the end of the TBS show before the Cubs/Cards game. First time I've seen Harold Reynolds on the tube in a long time. It's funny how since we largely dislike ESPN and they seemed to treat him differently than other personalities who have had transgressions with women, some of us made Harold into a martyr of sorts.

The first words I heard him say were that he would have liked for Griffey to make the team. For baseball to make a gesture by naming him and all that crap.

And with that, I remembered he's a blithering idiot like the rest of 'em and I wish he'd get back off my TV.

But why? Shouldn't that be saved (in the event that they ever do it) for an old guy who is definitely retiring or at least one who plays for the host team? I bet Griffey plays a few more years.

One thing that I always liked about the All-Star Game in the 1970s and 1980s was that fading superstars that people wanted to see play were routinely added to the All-Star roster. A Willie Mays was never left off the roster. In fact, I believe that Yaz and Johnny Bench were added to the rosters in 1983 after the rest of the team had been named, as a special reward for their exceptional careers.

Does Ken Griffey deserve to be an All-Star this year based on his performance? Of course not. And he has said he'd rather take a family vacation that go to the ASG. But I'd have no problem at all with Griffey (and an American Leaguer - Frank Thomas perhaps) getting the equivalent of NASCAR's champion's provisional to play in the ASG.

I don't like that idea.

Screw these washed-up has-beens polluting the sanctity of the All-Star Game. This time it counts, baybee!

We'll never get to see old-school All Star battles where the players actually cared about who had the better league. Interleague play shows that the AL dominates the NL. There's too much money involved. Personally, I think that the result determining home field in the World Series is a poorly thought-out, knee-jerk reaction to the tie in Milwaukee. Starting pitchers can't be confirmed because we have to see how the rotations shake out into the beginning of next week.
