The Village Voice: Barra: Was Missing Bengie Molina the Mets’ First Error of the Season?

Yeah, and if Bengie Molina was my Village Voice delivery kid…I’d just be receiving Pazz & Jop #1!

Can we stop talking about Carlos Beltran’s knee surgery for just a minute? Bengie Molina is far from the best catcher in baseball, but he was clearly the best on the free agent market. And with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs last season, he was a significant upgrade from anyone the Mets had or were likely to get.

For weeks now, it’s practically been assumed that Bengie was going to be a Met. Now he’s re-signed with his old team, the San Francisco Giants, who flat out said just a few short months ago that they didn’t want him back. (“That ship has sailed,” Giants GM Brian Sabean told reporters during the winter meetings.)

...The only report that really matters, though, is the one that will explain to us how Omar Minaya could have let this debacle happen. Molina was dissatisfied with the Giants and was there to be had. How is it possible that the Mets, so desperate to acquire first rate free agents, would not have given a potential starting catcher a multi-year contract and a significant pay raise? Actually, there is one more significant question to be asked: does the failure to land Molina halt the momentum the Mets gained by signing Jason Bay? Only if they fail to come up with someone else as good or better as Molina, and right now there’s no indication of where such a catcher will come from.

The excerpt is fair IRTFA and it's all bad, 20 homers 80s ribbies, not only should the Mets have signed him it should have been multi-year for more than he made last year...
   2. Banta Posted: January 21, 2010 at 12:03 AM (#3442585)
I'd take Bengie Molina with major limbs missing for two guaranteed years over Omir ####### Santos being the opening day starter.
   3. Lassus: Posted: January 21, 2010 at 12:33 AM (#3442600)
Sorry, Banta, but I have to disagree. Yes, Santos sucks but a.) he's not the worst catcher in the league, many of them suck and b.) we don't have to overpay him over the next two years to be barely better (if at all) than suck, as we would be with Molina.

I'll accept that neither of us are particularly objective on the matter. Heh.
   4. Freeballin' (Tales of Met Power) Posted: January 21, 2010 at 12:44 AM (#3442605)
I vote that there is no bad non-signing of Bengie Molina. F^ck this stupid column. Stick Ellen Degeneres back there for all I care, but if you give Bengie Molina $12 million, I'll shoot him on general principle.

   8. PreservedFish Posted: January 21, 2010 at 01:09 AM (#3442637)
The Mets did the right thing.

Bengie Molina for one year would have been fine. As garbage as he is, he's better than any of our current options.

But Bengie wouldn't budge on his demand for a multiyear deal, and refusing to give it to him was the correct move.

I don't know. Two roster spots? I know you need a catcher . . . but once you've got the one you really want, what are you going to do with Barajas?

Apparently Pineiro is going to sign with LAA.

EDIT - Two years/$16m according to Heyman.

If that's right, Garland's negotiating position just got a LOT stronger.

Let's say Garland doesn't sign with the Mets. What do they do?

It's gotta be Pedro, right? Please let it be Pedro.
   13. Win one for Agrippa (haplo53) Posted: January 21, 2010 at 01:47 AM (#3442670)
At this point I'm dreading whatever "ZOMG WE MUST GET A PITCHER" deal they make.

Meh. I don't really worry about Omar signing free agents to overpriced deals. He's been GM for 5 years and the worst free agent signing he has made is probably Luis Castillo.
   15. JoeHova Posted: January 21, 2010 at 01:53 AM (#3442677)
Washburn is still out there too. There are still a few lackluster, league average-ish guys out there who will probably end up signing for cheap.
   16. AJM Posted: January 21, 2010 at 01:54 AM (#3442679)
Bengie Molina is far from the best catcher in baseball, but he was clearly the best on the free agent market.

Well, he was the best left, but that's because Zaun had signed a while ago.

Has Olivo signed? He's at least as good as Molina.

I was sort of dancing around the somewhat terrifying thought that he might choose to go the trade route to fill this need. I'd gladly overpay Garland if it meant the Mets wouldn't be sending real prospects away for an Aaron Harang.
   18. Russlan will never be fond of Jason Bay Posted: January 21, 2010 at 02:01 AM (#3442684)
Olivo signed with the Rockies. Yorvit is still out there (bleh). I'd prefer Garland but I guess Washburn would be alright. He was pretty awful with Detroit. Were there any injury issues?
   19. Sam M. Posted: January 21, 2010 at 02:02 AM (#3442685)
They scouted Sheets, remember.
   20. Tripon Posted: January 21, 2010 at 02:02 AM (#3442686)
Olivo signed with the Rockies for $2 million with a players option. Honestly, it might make more sense and see if the Rockies will trade Iannetta. They seem to want to #### on him as much as possible.

They gave him an extension. That doesn't sound like the Rockies don't value him.

I think everyone scouted Sheets.
   22. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: January 21, 2010 at 02:30 AM (#3442707)
If the deal was $16MM, I would have liked the Mets to get him. That said, I believe the pitching market has come down since Wolf signed his deal. Marquis, who was not as well regarded as Pineiro, got roughly the same amount about a month ago. Doug Davis was forced to take a one year deal. Maybe the Dodgers will drive Garland price up, but chances are the Mets can get him for a one year commitment. If not, Sheets, Bedard, Smoltz and Washburn are there for the taking.

Personally, if Garland goes to the Dodgers, I'm leaning towards Sheets. If healthy, this guy gives a 1-2 that can go against the Phillies's 1-2 combo. Smoltz intrigues me as well, but I'm a big believer in Niese. I think he's ready.
   23. Darren Posted: January 21, 2010 at 02:32 AM (#3442714)
The Mets need an old slow catcher now more than ever! And one with intangibles! I present you Jason Varitek--for the meager price of your now excess OF Fernando Martinez.

If not, Sheets, Bedard, Smoltz and Washburn are there for the taking.

None of those guys are as reliable as Garland. I'm not saying I'd prefer Garland to them, but those guys aren't perfect substitutes for him. Man, there are still a ton of players out there.

I don't like Piniero, but I don't know why the Mets wouldn't top this.

Put me down as a vote for Sheets.

I don't like Piniero, but I don't know why the Mets wouldn't top this.

Well, according to Heyman, they might have. The Mets' offer was 2/$15M, but "they might have been willing to go a little higher to seal the deal." Not clear how much higher, but it seems Piniero was willing to just say yes to the Angels, which tells me he simply preferred to play in LA and/or for the Angels, then to come back and see if the Mets would top $16M.
   27. Darren Posted: January 21, 2010 at 02:55 AM (#3442740)
I like Washburn in a biggish NL park.

Would the D-Backs be interested in dealing Snyder for Castillo (+ prospect)? If so, I'd like the Mets to explore that option, and sign the O-Dawg.

As for 1b, I'm still thinking Delgado.

They've signed Kelly Johnson to play second. I just don't see the Mets trading Castillo.
   30. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: January 21, 2010 at 03:07 AM (#3442754)
Forgot about that. I like Kelly Johnson a lot. Wish Omar had signed him....

If the Mets were willing to go $8M for Pineiro and $6M for Benji, do they have in them to land both Sheets (let's say $10M) and Garland ($6M)?

Santana
Sheets
Garland
Pelfrey
Perez/Maine

Gun to my head, if the Mets have to pick one or the other, I'd go with Sheets. Go big or go home.

BTW, a Garko/Branyan platoon wouldn't be a bad idea if Delgado can't play 1b anymore.
   34. Banta Posted: January 21, 2010 at 06:04 AM (#3442885)
a.) he's not the worst catcher in the league, many of them suck

If he's the starter, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being though. Although, that level of suck would probably make someone else the starter before long, so I guess that might be better than Molina for two years.
   35. thetailor Posted: January 21, 2010 at 06:21 AM (#3442904)
I know I am late to the thread here but I've got a question for the Mets fans here: what is the deal with Santos' reverse platoon split? He hit righties better than lefties last year. Is that the kind of thing that is sustainable? Does someone with a reverse-split tend to always have one, for one reason or another? (And no I am not asking whether he will suck in general)

Here are the numbers for Blanctos:

Santos, 2009, OPS: 616 vs. LHP, 727 vs. RHP
Blanco, career, OPS: 739 vs, LHP, 627 vs. RHP

Blanco's splits were even more pronounced last season, when he posted an awful 563 OPS against RHP and an amazing 1039 OPS against LHP (albeit in only 59 at bats). In 2008, 668 v. RHP and 771 v. LHP.

Combined with their alleged defensive prowess -- that's not a terrible catcher. Right?

In one word, no.

While it is possible that Santos has arrived at a new talent level, it is much more likely that he'll regress which means he is nothing more than a mediocre backup. If Santos had a better minor league track record, I wouldn't mind giving him the everyday job. In addition, it's hard to platoon position players in this day and age and this is especially difficult to do for catchers.

If the Mets start the season with Santos and Blanco, Thole will eventually be called up or they will make a trade for someone.

Seriously, I just wish the Mets had Jesus Flores right now. I can't believe the Nationals signed I-Rod.
   37. GM Posted: January 21, 2010 at 06:50 AM (#3442924)
I don’t think anyone even buys Santos’ meager 2009.
   38. GM Posted: January 21, 2010 at 06:52 AM (#3442926)
Can the Mets just sign Bedard, Sheets, and a Ryan Garko type and just go for broke? They already need several things to go right to make a run, why not just bet the house while they’re at it on short term deals?
   39. Something Other Posted: January 21, 2010 at 07:38 AM (#3442940)

Santos minor league splits were 659 v rhp, 623 v lhp. That's in around 1200 PAs, so I doubt his splits are as pronounced as last year, and unless he's made a very unpublic change in his swing or had lasik I don't think he has a chance to even be a backup. Besides, the Mets went out of their way to trash his gamecalling ability so even Dayton Moore is unlikely to take an interest before Santos' weaknesses are exposed. On the other hand, one piece of good news is his BABIP was pretty low in 2009, so he wasn't merely lucky--maybe he has changed something.

Can the Mets just sign Bedard, Sheets, and a Ryan Garko type and just go for broke? They already need several things to go right to make a run, why not just bet the house while they’re at it on short term deals?
Makes sense to me. There's no realistic chance to make a real run with the club as currently constructed, so why not roll the dice on several one year deals?

Who's the 4th OFer with Beltran out? That's how much the FO has learned from last season.

maybe they actually signed Jose Molina and we all missed it.

Speaking of missing out, Phillies Nation has what looks like an optimistic projection for the Mets for 2010, giving them around 84 wins. It projects Santana at 4.7 WAR, and Pelfrey at 3.6, Bay at 4, and so on. Without further improvement this offseason, with the uncertainty of Beltran's recovery and modifying some of the more extravagant projections, the Mets look an awful lot like an 80 win team.

On a team that's apparently planning to give a minimum of 40 starts to their 6th and worse starters, 80 wins isn't bad at all. Don't blame me, buddy. I would have signed Piniero and Marquis for what they got, added Polanco instead of Cora, signed Zaun, and so on and so on.
