There are few ironies sadder than the myriad Jabba-The-Hut-like men in the stands (and online) raging against Colon for being too fat. Bart deserves so much better.

I love this signing. If it works out for the Sox, great. Colon was a nasty ##### in his heyday, I got to see him obliterate the Twins plenty of times while he was with Cleveland and Chicago.

Yeah, this seems low risk/high but unlikely reward. There's nothing really to not like about it.
I'm surprised he couldn't get some sort of real contract from any team.

Allard Baird did most of the heavy lifting on this one.
Seems a little odd in that, of all the potential low-risk, high-reward guys out there (Milton, Garcia, Weaver, Lohse, etc.) Colon, I believe, has the worst numbers against the Yankees, and is famously ineffective against A-Rod in particular. Not that that necessarily drives a decision like this, and maybe they talked to all these guys and found Colon to be the cheapest option, but there's potential that this will come back to bite them in a tight situation if they really end up leaning on Colon in their rotation.
I accidentally triple posted, so I'll just take advantage of the edit feature and remind that Colon was the pitcher whom A-Rod victimized with his 3 HR, 10 RBI in 2006.
And here I'll say that if the Sox really wanted to get in the Yankees' craw, they should have gone with Milton or Weaver. If I had to pick one of the guys I listed, though, I predict Garcia will have the best year. (Sorry for the faux pas.)

Yeah - an ERA+ of 65 in about 70 innings. That will be the best of that motley bunch.
Bart is done - sorry to say it - but since that moment in the 2005 ALDS - game 5 when he left with an arm injury - he has never been the same.

The majority of their schedule is against non-Yankees teams. Whether Colon has anything left against those teams, who knows?
This is one of those fliers a large-revenue team can afford to take. It is a low risk move with someone who (theoretically) has a high ceiling. If it doesn't work out, cut him loose; if he shows some promise leave him in the minors until he's ready; if he is excellent bring him up. If it were a $10 million tryout, then it's not worth it; but there's a relative sliver of payroll being allocated to him.

I posted something on Colon's first bullpen session in the other thread, but didn't realize that thread didn't have a "Boston" tag on it and thus was hopelessly lost. Alas.

That's a sobering thought.
