Thome, Konerko, Ramirez, Uribe hit four straight homers in White Sox win

Jim Thome’s long three-run homer started it. Shortly after he returned to the dugout, the parade really got going.

Thome, Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez and Juan Uribe hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning Thursday to tie a major-league record and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-2 to complete a three-game sweep.

Toby Hall came to bat with the chance to make it five straight but struck out to end the inning. Hall, who was with the Dodgers when they hit four straight homers against the Padres in 2006, admitted he was trying to get another.

“That was the first time that I tried doing it. I was all in,” Hall said.

It's funny to see names like Ramirez and Anderson (LAD 2 years ago) on these lists of 4 straight bombs. All 4 Red Sox players had a history of power hitting, however. It just makes me wonder who's the least likely name/bat-type to be a part of one of these.

The White Sox hit three straight in the ninth inning of this game to break up one of Dave Stieb's near no-hitters. The first two were hit by guys who finished with 18 and three career home runs. Tom Seaver had exactly 300 wins then.

This will justify Uribe's existence to Ozzie for at least another season.

To be fair to Guillen and Uribe - (1) Guillen benched Uribe in favor of Alexei Ramirez as soon as he could justify doing so; and (2) Uribe has been doing a fine job as both a utility infielder and as a replacement for the oft-injured Joe Crede. I wouldn't mind seeing Uribe return in '09, as long as his role is similar to the role he's currently playing.

Another weird thing about today's game - Carlos Quentin had been hit by a pitch in five consecutive games. He sat out two straight games on Tuesday and Wednesday due to pain in his arm, was back in the lineup today, and promptly got plunked yet again.

I remember watching the Dodgers do it on TV. It was especially dramatic because the Dodgers were down by 4 runs, and they tied it with those 4 home runs in the bottom of the 9th -- after the Padres had added 3 insurance runs in the top of the inning.

Then the Padres went ahead in the top of the 10th -- and Nomah won it with a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 10th.

Damn, that was a hell of a game.

One curious thing about this feat: These are the years when it has happened:

1961 - Braves
1963 - Indians
1964 - Twins

2006 - Dodgers
2007 - Red Sox
2008 - White Sox

So, it never happens in the first 6 decades of the 20th Century.

Then 3 times in 4 years.

Then it doesn't happen for 4 more decades.

Then 3 times in 3 years.

I have no idea what, if ANYTHING, it means.

Quentin has 39 HBP in 953 major-league PA, or one every 24.45 plate appearances.

Craig Biggio was hit once every 43.87 plate appearances.

He does a little. Also, the deep crouch makes it hard for him to move back, and inside fastballs are the best way to go at him, so it all adds up.

How hard does he try to get out of the way? I saw one of the HBPs last week and his attempt to elude the offering seemed rather Baylorian. Not complaining mind you, as I wholeheartedly endorse the Baylor method of rotating the upper body a full quarter of an inch on any inside pitch.

He doesn't move much, but his stance doesn't really allow it. But give him credit -- he's earning it without armor.

...of course, that means nothing if he keeps taking pitches off that front shoulder.

Getting hit on the hand and wrist all the time has had a severe impact on Rickie Weeks as a hitter.

He sure does crowd the plate. Whether he wants to get hit...well, I suppose you couldn't get hit that much if you were really trying to get out of the way.

Quentin looks like Don Baylor up there so it's no surprise he gets hit like Baylor too.

He looks more like Jose Canseco to me. Heck, I see him up there and after all year my mind still says, "Canseco's up."
