THT: Calcaterra: Programming Note

Big news on the ShysterBall front! All hail Voltaire!

When I started writing ShysterBall in the spring of 2007, the idea was to give myself a place to be where I could escape the stress and unpleasantness of my legal career, if only for the briefest of moments. As time went on, it began to consume more and more of my waking hours and, in all honesty, interfering pretty significantly with that legal career. No, I never dropped the ball on a case, but it has been a struggle. I mean really, how is someone supposed to prepare for an oral argument when Roger Clemens is testifying before Congress? I’d like to say that I eventually managed to find balance with all of this, but that would be a lie. My life hasn’t been in balance since at least 2006. Maybe earlier. Something has to be done. So I’m doing it:

I’m quitting the law. Starting November 30th I will be writing about baseball full time for NBC Sports.com.

Obviously this wasn’t a unilateral decision on my part. NBC has decided that they want me all-in on Circling the Bases, and that’s not the kind of thing you have to ask me twice. The people over there have been fantastic to me since I started moonlighting back in April. They’ve never censored a word I’ve written. They’ve never declared a topic off-limits. Their instructions to me when I started were to make some f*cking noise, and they’ve allowed me to do that non-stop since. When they asked me to do it full time, it was a complete no-brainer. I don’t yet know how it’s going to all work out—the enormity of this is just starting to sink in—but to say I’m excited would be something of an understatement.

Thanks all.

As for the wife: her happiness is tempered by her fear that I will never shave, rarely bathe, and only occasionally wear pants going forward.

She's right to be afraid.

When I grow up, I want to be Craig Calcaterra.
   23. Shredder Posted: November 03, 2009 at 11:44 PM (#3376775)
So in other words, I'm beating the crap out of a professional baseball writer in a DMB league? Sounds about right. Of course, I'm also getting the crap beat out of me by a non-Craig professional baseball writer, but one out of two ain't bad. Also, I'm pretty sure the other guy cheats.
   24. Jeff K. Posted: November 03, 2009 at 11:58 PM (#3376790)
Craig, and I mean this in all sincerity: Go screw yourself, man. Damn, I get royally ###### over, let go from my job, deal with filing a grievance in a decidedly non-union environment, and my solace is that a year from now I'll be in law school. And here you are, got the gig, the wife we all know about, and you let a little internet fame go to your head and make you think you've got the chops to do it full time. Well, now that you're a member of the MSM, the sharp knives come out, Mister Calcaterra. If that is your real name, and it must be, because who would make that up?

I hate you.
   25. Snowboy Posted: November 04, 2009 at 12:07 AM (#3376797)
Sweet sassy molassy!
Good luck in the big time, full time, make us proud!

I love you too, Jeff.

Shredder: Dayn does cheat. He forced me to pick Dan Uggla.

   29. HowardMegdal Posted: November 04, 2009 at 12:49 AM (#3376840)
It is my sincere hope the Writers don't trade me to the Lawyers to complete this deal.

A great addition, though, no matter who we gave up to get you, Craig.

This could really be exciting if Comcast buys NBC. I would bet a 20 they go hard at getting the rights for baseball from Fox. And you know what that would mean....face time!
