THT: Jaffe: Most Recent 10-game winning streaks for all 30 teams

Pop quiz from Jaffe…

Earlier today, Philadelphia’s 10-game winning streak came to an end. In their honor, here is a list of the most recent ten-game winning streaks for all 30 teams. Included is the day they won #10 (which is also how they’re ranked, from most recent to oldest) and also noted is how long the winning streak was by its end.

Before looking - care to guess what team has never won 10 straight? Any guesses which team hasn’t done it since the LBJ Administration?

Wow, no '84 Tiger 10 game streak.

The '84 Tigers had two 9-game winning streaks. Detroit has not had a 9-game winning streak one time since 1984. But at least the American auto companies are doing well.

Caught me off guard, too, especially with that 35-5 start.

Also weird is that the Florida Marlins -- the team that has won two World Series titles without ever finishing first -- has never had a 10-game winning streak...though if they played 10 straight games against the Nationals, they'd have a fighting chance. (Hey, the 1916 White Sox had a seven-game series at Comiskey against the hapless A's due to rains that washed out three earlier games -- and the Sox won all seven.)

Bernie Williams was born during the Tigers' last 10+ winning streak. Piazza, Nomo, and Tim Salmon were newborns.

Ramon Hernandez was the most notable player born during the last White Sox streak. Jerry Hairston Jr. was born just after the streak ended. His dad was still in the minor leagues and can't be blamed. What does this have to do with Frank Tanana? He ended the streak by getting Bucky ####### Dent out.

Love this kind of stuff, DN. Thanks.

Amazed that TBR have had a 10-game streak, and it wasn't last year.

I've been very careful not to read anything.

1. Tampa Bay.
2. Pittsburgh.

But Julio Franco was 10.

That you haven't read anything is indeed pretty evident.

Here's my favorite back-to-back pair:

WAS 6/12/05 (10)
NYY 5/17/05 (10)

Detroit's only had five nine-game winning streaks since their big streak in 1968. (In comparison, the Marlins have already had that many in franchise history). Their last nine-game winning streak ended in 1984 (giving them their famous 35-5 record). They've had only two 8-game streaks since 1984 (in 2006 and 2007 respectively).

Oh - while I normally avoided the postseason, I checked it for the '05 White Sox (who were 11-1 in their playoff run). Including their late winning season streak and Opening day victory in '06, the Sox went 17-1: but the loss came right in the middle: win 9, lose 1, win 8.

Lastly, the Phillies once went over a half-century without a 10-game winning streak, which shouldn't be too surprising if you know much about their history.

Only three teams haven't had a 10-game losing streak since the 1990's began. The Yankees haven't had one since before 1954. I'd guess it was long before that.
The White Sox last lost ten straight in 1976, a couple of weeks after their last ten-game winning streak ended. The Cardinals last did it in 1980.

How hard is it to run the query for 10-game streaks? How common is it? Which franchise has the most?

Hmmm. . . .I smell a THT Live piece for tommorrow!

Fun fact: since their last 10-game win streak in 1968, the Tigers have had eight 10 (or more)-game losing streaks, in 1975, 1981, 1989, 1993, 1996 (twice!), 2002 and of course, 2003.

Bernie Williams was born during the Tigers' last 10+ winning streak. Piazza, Nomo, and Tim Salmon were newborns.

And I was six months old.

And every team in MLB still wore flannel uniforms.

And Jackie O. was still known as Mrs. John F. Kennedy.

And Jackie Robinson was the only "Negro" in the HOF.

And two guys from the 1903 World Series were still alive (Tommy Leach and Freddie Parent), as were a couple of 1890s players.

the record for winning streaks is still the 20 (21?) game streak the A's had in 2002, right?

Nope, the 1916 New York Giants, who won 26 in a row, all at home. And they still didn't win the pennant.

Also, when the Tigers won 10 in a row, MLB still didn't have divisional play, Frank Thomas and Jeff Bagwell were three months old, and the Senators were still playing at D.C. Stadium (it wasn't renamed RFK until 1969).

They also had a 17-game winning streak that year. Outside of the two streaks, they were 43-66.

The A's streak is an AL record, however (at least it was at the time, and I'm pretty sure it still stands).
