Baseball Primer Newsblog— The Best News Links from the Baseball Newsstand
Tuesday, December 04, 2007
I’m exhausting our supply of colons up there. Chris continues his series of interviews. This time’s victim is none other than John Thorn. Thorn has inspired some of my interest in the early, early days of baseball.
Also, I enjoyed this Sal Baxamusa article from yesterday, but never got around to posting it.

I like what Thorn said about sports:
"I love baseball above all sports, but I’d rather watch a hockey game. All the same, when I’m not watching hockey I never think about it all. When I’m not watching baseball, I’m always thinking about it."
I recently realized the same thing about myself with college basketball. I love WATCHING it (particularly Michigan State, my mom's alma mater, or Stanford, mine), but when the game is over I rarely think about it, and I have little interest in reading about it (sorry, newly launched Basketball Prospectus) or learning more about it. It's a diversion, not an obsession.
On the other hand, though I enjoy watching baseball in person or on TV, it's not really a must-see when it's on TV, and it's easy to turn off. But I THINK about baseball all the time, and read about it virtually every day, even in the winter.
Actually, I don't speak with the people I interview. I just e-mail 'em asking if they'd be willing to answer some questions - not over the phone, but by sending them a list of questions. Then I give them time to fill it out. This is the response.
