I like what Thorn said about sports:
"I love baseball above all sports, but I’d rather watch a hockey game. All the same, when I’m not watching hockey I never think about it all. When I’m not watching baseball, I’m always thinking about it."
I recently realized the same thing about myself with college basketball. I love WATCHING it (particularly Michigan State, my mom's alma mater, or Stanford, mine), but when the game is over I rarely think about it, and I have little interest in reading about it (sorry, newly launched Basketball Prospectus) or learning more about it. It's a diversion, not an obsession.
On the other hand, though I enjoy watching baseball in person or on TV, it's not really a must-see when it's on TV, and it's easy to turn off. But I THINK about baseball all the time, and read about it virtually every day, even in the winter.
Actually, I don't speak with the people I interview. I just e-mail 'em asking if they'd be willing to answer some questions - not over the phone, but by sending them a list of questions. Then I give them time to fill it out. This is the response.
