Tim Raines named manager of the Newark Bears

And with the best numbers to hit Newark since Longy Zwillman ran them!

“I’m thrilled at the opportunity to manage the Newark Bears in the greatest sports region in the country,” Raines said. “Newark is rich in baseball tradition, with legends like Yogi Berra, Monte Irvin and Ricky Henderson once calling the city home. I’m proud to be contributing to that history and excited at the energy and direction the new ownership team is bringing to the Bears.”

The Bears were sold to the California-based Bases Loaded group for $100,000 last week. The group agreed to assume $1 million in liabilities from its owner, developer Marc Berson.

“We are proud to have Tim Raines as the new manager of the Newark Bears. It’s a fresh start at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium and we couldn’t be more fortunate to have a future Hall of Famer leading our dugout every night,” Jim Wankmiller, president and CEO of the Bases Loaded Group, said.

I can't believe Tim Raines mispronounced "Rickey."

This is great, maybe I'll actually get out there this season. I hadn't realized they had not gone under, after all.

Also, they should bring Rickey back, and Raines should player-manage.

well add raines to the long list of players who have made me say "you know, i should really check out a bears game now that ____ is there" only to never actually go to a game. but this time it will be different, i swear.

This is an outrage! I can't believe they hired someone so unqualified! What about Davey Johnson? Bobby Valentine? Larry Dierker?

At last, a reason to alight at the Broad Street station of the Morris & Essex lines! (Seriously, I'm delighted to see the Bears stay in business.)
