Tony Clark, Padres agree on contract

Well…so much for reaching 250 HR’s.

The Padres and pinch-hitter/first baseman Tony Clark have agreed to the basics of a one-year contract worth in the neighborhood of $900,000, but it may take another day or two to work out the details.

“It’s looking good,” Clark’s agent, John Boggs, said yesterday. Padres General Manager Kevin Towers also expressed strong optimism.

For most of the offseason, the Padres and several other clubs assumed Clark would sign for a fourth consecutive season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. But a snafu made Clark available to the buy-low Padres at a reduced price.

Earlier this offseason, Arizona offered a two-year deal worth $3 million to Clark, a former San Diegan (Christian High) who spends his offseasons in northwest Phoenix. Several Diamondbacks players had described Clark, 35, as a leader for a young Arizona club that won the National League West last season. In two of his three seasons with Arizona, Clark returned good value.

A shorter deal for less money and less playing time. Interesting strategy.

$5 says Tall Chris Young is paying for this deal himself.

So Tony rejects a 2 year, $3m deal from his hometown team, and then signs $900k deal with a rival?

Good thinking there, super-agent John Boggs. Good thinking.

nice.
that SOB owns the friars.
that ought to be a three game swing in the standings right there.

I'm guessing he'd rather be second string than third string.

Since his PT will either come at the expense of Adrian Gonzalez or as a RHB, you may be right.

This is one of those moves that, on its face, looks rather insignificant, but it's going to have a wonderful impact on Adrian Gonzalez, as well as the bench. Gonzalez had 646 AB last year, and was quite worn down toward the end of the year. Anyone more viable than Geoff Blum to spell Gonzalez on occasion is a helpful thing.

Also, San Diego's bench has been anemic at best over the past couple of years, and you figure that with Clark and whomever doesn't get the start between Hairston and Headley in left, that's two viable power bats on the bench.

Whether or not you question the intelligence of Clark's taking the deal, it's going to have a reasonable impact on this club.

2005 .304/.366/.636 in 393 PA's for $750k.

I'd say that's one year of great value.
