Toronto Star: Griffin: Gaston should be Jays’ GM

Shaketism sweeps across Toronto as Cito Gaston and his vibrant aura materialize!

Gaston looks and acts younger than when he was fired in 1997. He has lost weight and regains a vibrant aura. He has lost his bitterness, given a chance to observe the organization from a distance. His voice and carriage is that of a much younger man. But does that mean he can handle the grind of 162 games as manager? No, it does not.

That leaves the GM’s role. Baseball’s best GMs are not necessarily the smartest. They are the best because they surround themselves with complementary talents. If Gaston became GM (and he likes living in Toronto, as opposed to some) he already has a talented young assistant in Canadian Alex Anthopoulos to handle the minutiae and contracts. As for the senior guys on the baseball side, Gaston has a lot of friends from his many years in baseball to tap into.

As for the effect he has at the Rogers Centre, the all-important Baby Boomer fans were lost but now seem found.

Cito’s career as manager – fired in ‘97, re-hired in ‘08 – neatly bookends the most damaging years of the Mitchell Report on performance enhancing drugs.

There is a need for a return to baseball the way it was meant to be played. Not a bunch of thick-legged guys waiting for the pitcher to make a mistake, but guys like Gaston’s all-time favourite player, Roberto Alomar, five-tool players with intelligence.

Yeah, Cito, go out and stock your team with Roberto Alomars! Good luck with that.

Because Alomar is a shining example of a nice guy who plays the game the right way.

I was just curious- How did Griffin treat Gaston last time he was at the helm in Toronto? It seems to me that he never seems to like anybody on the Jays.

I'd be all for Gaston being the GM at this point. Anyone but Ricciardi, who has been treading water since he was hired. Hopefully Gino Tenacci's return can get the offense going a bit.

Nah Gaston is too old for GM. The game has changed. THough so far I like him as manager and wouldn't necessarily be opposed for him next year.

This annoys me more and more. How many guys on the Jays meet this description? Wells doesn't. Rios doesn't. Eckstein, Hill, MacDonald, Scutaro and Rolen don't. Is he talking about Frank Thomas and Matt Stairs? The DH who's been released and a platooned outfielder? Yeah, those two were really the heart of the team, Griffin. You ####### tool.

What the f*ck does the Mitchell report have to do with re-hiring Cito Gaston?

I was going to post something similar until I saw your post. The Jays can't hit and are pretty athletic in the field, how does he come up with that description of the team? It's simply not true.

Griffin is still making fun of Beane through JP when the rest of the world has realized JP does his job much differently and much worse. If anything JP pays too much attention to "character" when putting together a team. Like Shooty says, if anything, the Jays need more of the guys Griffin thinks they're overloaded with.

I don't get bringing Cito back. His "wait for your pitch and murder it, strike out on anything else" approach didn't seem to work well in the past. But it did allow me to reminisce about how awesome the Blue Jay offense was in its peak, which is what the point of the move was I guess...Remember Kelly Gruber?

Which is also funny as the only sterotypical "Moneyball" guys the A's have are Cust and Thomas. If Griffin actually paid attention to baseball, he'd notice the A's are a pitching and defense team and have been for several years. I'm just a doofus who follows baseball for a hobby. I work 50 hours a week and then go home and fall asleep trying to read a book. I have zero doubt I know more about baseball than Richard Griffin. He's stealing money.

Thanks! It's as if Richard Griffin believes J.P. doesn't want guys like Alomar on the team for aesthetic reasons.

I'm all for criticizing gm's. It's our birthright as fans to second guess gm's and managers. It's gone on for over 100 years and it will never stop. It's part of the fun of following a sport. But if you're going to rip a guy in the press and call for someone to get fired, you should know what the hell you're talking about. Sportswriters shouldn't go about their task of destroying someone's career as if it's no more important than curbing their dog.

Well, if it's any consolation, given that JP is still employed despite Griffin's best efforts (to say nothing of his own stumble-bumery) obviously there's no career destroying going on here.

No, but Theo, Byrnes, Beane, and Friedman are four that fall into the category of good and smart. Smarts don't make you a good GM, but they really help.

I had to look up who Friedman was. It turns out that I knew the names of all of the GM's except for TB, LAA, StL, and Fla. Although that's looking at a list and saying, "yeah, I knew he was the GM". I don't know how many I could have named off the top of my head.
